Objective: To observe the proliferation and migration of endothelial cells after 30% total burn surface area (TBSA) of deep partial thickness scald, and the effect of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on angiogenesis during wound healing.
Methods: A total of 133 male Wistar rats were divided randomly into normal control (n = 7), injured control group (n = 42), bFGF group (n = 42) and anti-c-fos group (n = 42). The apoptosis expression of fibroblasts was determined with in situ hybridization and the changes of proliferation cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), focal adhesion rinase(FAK), c-fos and extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK) proteins expression were detected with immunohistochemistry staining technique after 3 hours, 6 hours, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days and 21 days of scald.

Objective: To further improve the treatment of burn wound sepsis.
Methods: Eight patients with burn wound sepsis, of whom 6 with MODS and two with septic shock, were treated consecutively in our hospital from September 1997 to October 1998. The plasma concentrations of IL-6, IL-8 TNF and LPS were assayed before and after surgical intervention and at the time when the patients' vital signs became stable.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of the changes of the intracellular Na+ concentration on the cellular lactate production of different skeletal muscles in septic rats as compared to that of the normal ones.
Methods: Using septic model of rats, we established the in vitro muscle incubation system with sufficient oxygen supply as well as the NADH fluoremetric method for the detection of trace amount of lactate in the samples. By using the specific Na+ ionorphor--monensin, the distribution of transmembrane Na+ was under control and the lactate production of the muscle cells were measured.

Objective: To explore the possibility of reducing reperfusion injuries of internal organ with acidic and basic fibroblast growth factors (aFGF and bFGF).
Methods: Two kinds of ischemia and reperfusion animal models were used in this study. In rat model of superior mesenteric artery (SMA) occlusion, microvascular clamp was placed on the root of SMA to cut off the blood flow for 45 minutes, and then the clamp was removed.

Hemorrhagic shock, sepsis, excessive systemic inflammatory reactions, and failure of intestinal mucosal barrier function are known to be major predisposing factors in the development of MSOF in patients after severe trauma or burns. We investigated the possibility of complicating clinically simulating MSOF in animals. Our results showed that, with compounded traumatic factors, including damages to the bowel, and proper circulatory and respiratory support, an animal model which simulated the pathophysiology and histopathology of MSOF could be reproduced to offer opportunity for the study of mechanisms and therapy.

In order to know the regularity of forming edema after thermal injury, we performed experiments of pulmonary edema in isolated lobes with steam and obtained direct continuous measurements of transudation as it occurs. Transvascular flux (Qf) and gain weight (Gw) of the lobe increased immediately and the peak value of exudation occurred within half an hour after inhalation injury. Studies in protein content, colloid osmotic pressure of bronchus exudate and water content of lung, reconfirmed increase in pulmonary capillary permeability.
