Article Synopsis
  • Stigma negatively impacts the quality of life for individuals with severe mental illness, but those with lived experiences of mental illness generally have lower stigma compared to the general population.
  • A study conducted in New Delhi involving 647 individuals with severe mental illnesses matched with 649 non-psychiatric individuals found that the cases reported significantly lower stigma scores.
  • The findings suggest that individuals with lived experience may be more accepting of mental illness, highlighting the importance of including them in campaigns aimed at reducing stigma.

Article Synopsis
  • Phakomatosis pigmentovascularis (PPV) is a condition combining a vascular nevus and a pigmentary nevus, which is classified into five subtypes, with type II being the most common.
  • Type II, also known as Happle's phakomatosis cesioflammea, features a nevus flammeus and pigmentary nevi such as aberrant Mongolian spots and nevus of Ota, and around 50% of patients experience systemic involvement, notably in the central nervous system and eyes.
  • This text discusses a unique case of a 30-year-old male diagnosed with PPV type II, alongside Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome and congenital triangular alopecia, marking a rare

Introduction: Recalcitrant dermatophytoses is on the rise. With increasing microbiological resistance and clinical failures reported to terbinafine, itraconazole (ITR) is being increasingly used for the condition. ITR has an unpredictable bioavailability and quality variation among brands is known to affect clinical outcome.

Background: Cryptococcus neoformans is the leading cause of cryptococcal meningitis in HIV/AIDS patients. As infections in humans are predominantly caused by the inhalation of basidiospores from environmental sources, therefore, analysing the population structure of both clinical and environmental populations of C neoformans can increase our understanding of the molecular epidemiology of cryptococcosis.

Objective: To investigate the genotypic diversity and antifungal susceptibility profile of a large collection of C neoformans isolates (n = 523) from clinical and environmental sources in India between 2001 and 2014.

A 3-year-old boy presented to us with swelling of the right upper lip and the surrounding perioral area with the multiple clear fluid-filled grouped vesicles on the mucosal surface. The patient's mother had a similar swelling located at the same anatomic location extending to the cheek and the ala of nose on the same side. Magnetic resonance imaging and histopathological examination were suggestive of microcystic lymphatic malformation (LM) in both mother and child.

Thalidomide has been used as an effective treatment for prurigo nodularis (PN) with a median dose of 200 mg, but the risk of peripheral neuropathy precludes long-term use. We analysed the efficacy of low-dose thalidomide (< 100 mg) in 17 patients with recalcitrant PN. Patients were initiated on thalidomide 50 mg on alternate days, and the dose was increased (doubled) in a stepwise manner, if needed, until a ≥ 50% reduction in score (partial response; PR) on a visual analogue scale (VAS) was achieved.

Predatory journals (PJ) exploit the open-access model promising high acceptance rate and fast track publishing without proper peer review. At minimum, PJ are eroding the credibility of the scientific literature in the health sciences as they actually boost the propagation of errors. In this article, we identify issues with PJ and provide several responses, from international and interdisciplinary perspectives in health sciences.

Hallucination-like experiences (HLEs) are typically defined as sensory perceptions in the absence of external stimuli. Multidimensional tools, able to assess different facets of HLEs, are helpful for a better characterization of hallucination proneness and to investigate the cross-national variation in the frequencies of HLEs. The current study set out to establish the validity, factor structure, and measurement invariance of the Launay-Slade Hallucinations Scale-Extended (LSHS-E), a tool to assess HLEs.

A 'Grantathon' model to mentor new investigators in mental health research.

Health Res Policy Syst

October 2017

Department of Psychiatry, Centre of Excellence in Mental Health, PGIMER-Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Road, New Delhi, 110001, India.

Background: There is a critical gap between needs and available resources for mental health treatment across the world, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In countries committed to increasing resources to address these needs it is important to conduct research, not only to assess the depth of mental health needs and the current provision of public and private mental health services, but also to examine implementation methods and evaluate mental health approaches to determine which methods are most effective in local contexts. However, research resources in many LMICs are inadequate, largely because conventional research training is time-consuming and expensive.

Unlabelled: Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, heritable disorder. Genome-wide association studies, conducted predominantly among Caucasians, have indicated > 100 risk alleles, with most significant SNPs on chromosome 6.
