Article Synopsis
  • Small intestinal metastasis is very rare, with only 13 documented cases, typically presenting as intestinal obstruction, and patients with metastatic esophageal cancer face a very low survival rate.
  • A case study discusses a man in his 50s diagnosed with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, who underwent aggressive treatment but subsequently experienced complications from small bowel metastasis.
  • Unfortunately, despite surgery, the patient only survived 3 months post-operation, highlighting the serious prognosis for esophageal cancer patients who develop small bowel metastasis and the need for early diagnosis and management.

Ectopic eruption of molars occurs more frequently in developing permanent dentition, and requires immediate intervention. Herein, two cases are discussed with ectopic eruption of permanent maxillary first molars which were diagnosed and managed conservatively using a modified Humphrey's appliance, named the NR's appliance. The appliance was fabricated by band adaptation and using wire components of a 21-gauge stainless-steel wire.

  • The study aims to examine the incidence and types of drug abuse among individuals under 30 years old who have experienced acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
  • The research involved 153 patients, with 17 patients (11.1%) identified as drug abusers; common substances included opium, energy drinks, whey protein, inhaled marijuana, and heroin.
  • Results indicate a significant increase in drug abuse trends over time, signaling a need for strict regulations to address this growing issue as it is a modifiable risk factor for ACS in young adults.

Article Synopsis
  • - Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) leads to excess parathyroid hormone production, causing high calcium levels (hypercalcemia) and related kidney issues, including stone diseases and nephrocalcinosis, which were evaluated in a study of 583 patients divided into four groups based on their kidney conditions.
  • - Clinical factors such as younger age, male gender, hematuria, and low eGFR were linked to higher rates of nephrocalcinosis, with significant differences in calcium levels between groups with and without kidney conditions.
  • - Post-surgery, patients with nephrocalcinosis showed reduced serum calcium levels and a small percentage experienced complete resolution of their condition, indicating that surgery may have beneficial effects

  • Difficult coronary sinus anatomy can complicate left ventricular lead placement, leading to potential nonresponse in cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT).
  • A retrospective study examined CRT device parameters from 133 implants, finding that 23 patients (17.29%) required off-label techniques due to challenging anatomy, with notable methods including stylet and guidewire retention.
  • Despite initial successful implantation using these techniques, 26.08% of leads experienced technical failure and loss of capture over a median follow-up of 44 months, suggesting a need for improved lead types like active fixation and specialized pacing methods in these cases.

Background And Aims: None of the clinical difficult airway predictors are 100% sensitive and specific. Ultrasound is being used for airway assessment, but there is still no established parameters or model to predict difficult laryngoscopy. This observational study was planned to determine the predictive ability of clinical and sonography-based airway assessment parameters for difficult laryngoscopy and intubation.

Article Synopsis
  • * Out of 82 patients, a significant number did not respond to steroid treatment, but the baseline histological scores did not show a strong association with the need for second-line therapy or colectomy.
  • * The conclusion suggests that these histological scores are not reliable predictors for treatment needs in ASUC, prompting a call for further research on their long-term impact.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) in coronary atherosclerosis using intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
  • It compares two groups based on non-HDL-C levels: those with normal levels (≤130 mg/dl) and those with high levels (>130 mg/dl), finding significant differences in plaque characteristics and burden between the groups.
  • The results indicate that higher non-HDL-C levels correlate with increased plaque burden and larger necrotic core volume, suggesting its importance as a predictor for plaque vulnerability in coronary arteries.

Complete traumatic dorsal spondyloptosis with no neurological involvement is so rare due to the inherent stability of the thoracic spine, that only 2 other cases are reported in literature. A 31-year male with history of fall, and normal neurological examination was noted to have grade 5 dislocation at D7-D8, with locking of D7-8 bodies and expanded canal due to pedicle fractures accommodating the displaced spinal cord. As the excessive manipulation to achieve reduction was deemed too risky to be worthy, it was decided to do in-situ fixation without reduction.

Mini-implant assisted orthodontic correction of lip and occlusal cant of a young adult: A case report.

Int Orthod

December 2024

Unit of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Deformities, Oral Health and Sciences Centre (OHSC), Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh 160012, India. Electronic address:

Patients seek orthodontic treatment to correct unesthetic and asymmetric smiles because even a minimal cant of 4 is well perceived by a layperson. This case report describes a nonsurgical orthodontic management of iatrogenic occlusal canting in a 22-year-old female, who developed it during a previous orthodontic treatment for an impacted canine. The iatrogenic cant was corrected by the intrusion of the left mandibular segment followed by extrusion of left maxillary segment using mini-implants.

  • This study focused on the epidemiology and management of degloving soft tissue injuries (DSTIs) at a tertiary care center in northern India, with a follow-up on postoperative outcomes and disabilities.
  • A total of 75 patients were examined, predominantly young males with injuries mostly resulting from traffic accidents; treatments included multiple surgical procedures and rehabilitation efforts.
  • The findings revealed significant postoperative complications, varying lengths of hospital stays, and varying degrees of disability, with most patients returning to work, although some faced lasting impacts from their injuries.

  • - The study compared the effects of Coblation and Electrocautery on nasal morbidity in patients undergoing endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery for pituitary macroadenomas, with 160 participants divided into two groups.
  • - Coblation was found to reduce surgery duration (average 83 mins) compared to electrocautery (average 96 mins) and resulted in a clearer surgical field with less nasal crusting and granulation, highlighting its effectiveness.
  • - Despite similar outcomes for nasal bleeding, deformity, or sense of smell between groups, coblation yielded better postoperative results, indicating its potential to enhance patients' quality of life post-surgery.

We describe a young girl of steroid resistant nephrotic syndrome with rapidly reaccumulating right sided pleural effusion. On evaluation, the patient was diagnosed with right side pleuro-peritoneal leak leading to recurrent right hydrothorax. To the best of our knowledge, hydrothorax due to transdiaphragmatic shunting in a nephrotic patient has not been reported earlier.

Background: The use of trans anastomotic feeding tube (TAFT) during the repair of Esophageal atresia/Tracheo-esophageal fistula (EA/TEF) aims to enhance outcomes by enabling early feeding, reducing the requirement for parenteral nutrition, and reducing complications such as anastomotic leak by stenting the anastomosis. However, TAFT's benefits and drawbacks are debated due to conflicting reports. Thus, we conducted a prospective pilot randomized control trial to elucidate the impact of TAFT on postoperative outcomes and the potential benefits of avoidance of TAFT.

  • Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) presents challenges due to the presence of dysfunctional natural killer (NK) cells, which are affected by the lack of essential receptors and the action of the polycomb protein EzH2.
  • A new strategy involves engineering CD56 NK cells by delivering a plasmid that suppresses EzH2 using chitosan nanoparticles, allowing for improved NK cell function against AML.
  • In experimental models, this approach led to reduced leukemia stem cell populations and increased NK cell activity, highlighting its potential as an effective and safer method for AML immunotherapy.
