Purpose: We describe the baseline ophthalmic and cardiovascular risk factors across countries, race, and sex for the Quark207 treatment trial for acute nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION).

Design: Prospective, randomized controlled clinical trial.

Participants: Adults 50 to 80 years of age with acute NAION recruited from 80 sites across 8 countries.

Background: Teleophthalmology provides an opportunity to conduct consultations in far-flung and remote areas that have no access to specialized eye care. Effects of systemic drugs on the development and progression of age-related macular degeneration.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of severe loss of central vision among people over 50. The pathophysiology of the disease is multifactorial and can be attributed to genetics, aging, inflammation, environmental factors, and lifestyle factors including smoking, diet, obesity, and alcohol consumption. While there is no treatment for dry AMD, the current standard treatment for wet AMD is an intraocular injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor-an effective, yet expensive, therapy that requires ongoing treatment.

A Novel Method to Improve Inter-Clinician Variation in the Diagnosis of Retinopathy of Prematurity Using Machine Learning.

Purpose: Inter-clinician variation could cause uncertainty in disease management. This is reported to be high in Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), a potentially blinding retinal disease affecting premature infants. Machine learning has the potential to quantify the differences in decision-making between ROP specialists and trainees and may improve the accuracy of diagnosis.

The impact of early intervention on a child with vision loss in infancy - A parental perspective.

Purpose: : To assess the impact of early intervention services provided to children with visual loss and to report how parents perceive them in terms of a child's development and the family dynamics.

Methods: : A qualitative descriptive study was conducted on a purposively selected sample of 15 children with severe visual impairment, availing early intervention services at a tertiary care facility in Pune, Maharashtra. Data were collected by conducting in-depth interviews of the parents with the help of a semi-structured interview topic guide.

Effects on ocular aberration and contrast sensitivity after implantation of spherical and aspherical monofocal intraocular lens - A comparative study.

Purpose: Phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is the standard of care for cataractous eyes. Monofocal IOLs are spherical or aspheric. The aspheric design of IOLs reduces the spherical and higher-order aberrations and impacts contrast sensitivity post cataract surgery.

Visual impairment and blindness among children from schools for the blind in Maharashtra state, India: Changing trends over the last decade.

Purpose: To determine the causes of severe visual impairment and blindness in children in schools for the blind in Maharashtra, India.

Methods: Children aged <16 years, enrolled in the schools for the blind in Maharashtra state, India were examined between October 2018 and December 2019. The anatomical sites and etiology for blindness were recorded using the World Health Organization's standard reporting form.

Cost analysis of pediatric cataract surgery in a tertiary eye care hospital in Western India.

Purpose: To assess the cost of pediatric cataract surgery in a tertiary eye care hospital from a provider's perspective.

Methods: Retrospective review of direct costs incurred for pediatric cataract surgery for the financial year April 1, 2018, to March 31, 2019. The cost analysis was done by standard costing methods.

Severity of diabetic retinopathy and its relationship with age at onset of diabetes mellitus in India: A multicentric study.

Purpose: To present clinical profile and risk factors of sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy (STDR) among people with age of onset of diabetes (AOD) <25 versus ≥25 years.

Methods: A retrospective chart analysis of consecutive patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) n = 654) treated at 14 eye care centers across India between 2018 and 2019 was performed. Patients were divided into two groups, Group 1: AOD <25 years and Group 2: AOD ≥25 years.

Imaging of iris vasculature: current limitations and future perspective.

Fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography have been the traditional ways to image the vasculature of the iris in the last few decades. Because of the invasive nature of these procedures, they are performed in rare situations, and thus, our understanding about iris vasculature is very limited. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a noninvasive imaging method that enables the detailed visualization of the retinal and choroidal vascular networks.

Comparison of bleb morphology by anterior segment optical coherence tomography and clinical outcome after phacotrabeculectomy with mitomycin C or Ologen implant.

Purpose: To compare the bleb morphology by Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography (ASOCT) and clinical outcome after Phacotrabeculectomy with either mitomycin C or Ologen implant.

Methods: In a prospective interventional active controlled study, 93 patients aged 18 years and above underwent phacotrabeculectomy with either mitomycin C (53 eyes) or ologen implant (40 eyes), followed up for 12 months. The primary outcome measure was to note the evolution of bleb morphology by ASOCT in the two groups over 12 months.

Prevalence of Anxiety and Depression in Patients With Primary Glaucoma in Western India.

Prcis: Glaucoma can cause disturbance in psychological and emotional functioning of patients, leading to anxiety and depression, even early in the disease. Identification and management of these problems should be included as a part of the holistic approach for patient care.

Purpose: To explore all possible barriers faced by transgenders (TG) and commercial sex workers (CSW) in accessing eye care in Pune city in western India.

Methods: This qualitative study was conducted at a tertiary eye care center in Pune. Interview topic guides for face-to-face interviews and focused group discussions were developed.

Assistive Framework for Automatic Detection of All the Zones in Retinopathy of Prematurity Using Deep Learning.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a potentially blinding disorder seen in low birth weight preterm infants. In India, the burden of ROP is high, with nearly 200,000 premature infants at risk. Early detection through screening and treatment can prevent this blindness.

Can the postoperative follow-up visit be deferred up to four weeks after an uneventful cataract surgery? - A randomized controlled trial.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the postoperative visual outcome after a Day 0 examination in patients with two follow-ups, one between Day 3 to Day 7 and other between Day 25 to Day 30 to those with a single ophthalmic follow-up directly after 25-30 Days and to assess the safety of deferral of the first follow-up visit at 1 week.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic ability of macular ganglion cell layer (GCL) analysis using spectral domain optical coherence tomography against retinal nerve fiber layer analysis (RNFL), short-wavelength automated perimetry (SWAP), and standard automated perimetry (SAP) in early detection of glaucoma.

Methods: Participants fulfilling the inclusion criteria were consecutively enrolled from the glaucoma clinic of tertiary care eye hospital in Western India from November 2015 to October 2016. The subjects underwent a detailed evaluation by trained glaucoma specialists.

Background: Razumab™ (world's first biosimilar ranibizumab) is approved for several macular disorders including wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We evaluated the safety and efficacy of biosimilar ranibizumab in wet AMD.

Methods: This prospective, multicentre, rAnibizumab bioSimilar Safety Efficacy postmarkeTing (ASSET) study enrolled patients aged ≥ 50 years with wet AMD having best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) between 20/40 and 20/320.

Impact of treatment of diabetic macular edema on visual impairment in people with diabetes mellitus in India.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to report visual and anatomical outcomes following treatment for diabetic macular edema (DME) in clinical practice in India.

Methods: Retrospective chart review of patients with DME who were initiated on treatment and followed up for at least 1 year at 9 tertiary eye care centers during 2016-2017 was performed. Data on demographics, systemic illnesses, visual acuity and anatomical characteristics of DME, treatment history were collated and analyzed for change in visual acuity level and central macular thickness at 1 year.

Management of ocular surface squamous neoplasia extending up to a filtering trabeculectomy bleb.

A 73-year-old-gentleman was referred for ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) in his right eye (RE). He had history of combined cataract with trabeculectomy in RE and was maintaining his intraocular pressure (IOP). He showed a corneoscleral lesion measuring 11 × 8 mm in nasal quadrant wherein, the superior edge of the lesion was extending up to the filtering bleb.

Assessment of psychosocial impact of primary glaucoma and its effect on quality of life of patients in Western India.

Purpose: : To assess the impact of primary glaucoma of varying severity and duration on psychosocial functioning and quality of life of patients.

Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was carried on 200 patients attending the glaucoma clinic of a tertiary care hospital in western India. After obtaining approval from the institutional ethics committee, written informed consent was taken.

Methods: Prospective analysis of total 1300 phacoemulsification surgeries performed by 52 phacoemulsification trainees divided into three groups based on the previous cataract surgical experience. The pretraining and posttraining average mean scores, independent completion rates (ICR), and complication rates among the groups were calculated and statistically analyzed.

Eyelid Lesion as a Presenting Sign of Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma.

Eyelid metastases are relatively rare, and they can occasionally lead the way to an unknown primary malignancy elsewhere. The authors report a case of 65-year-old diabetic gentleman with a right-sided eyelid lesion that was present for 1 month and turned out to be a presenting sign of a previously undiagnosed pancreatic adenocarcinoma. The eyelid mass had been treated elsewhere for 2 weeks for a presumed infectious lesion, using systemic antibiotics and was then referred to us in view of no response.
