Background: MRI fusion prostate biopsy has improved the detection of clinically significant prostate cancer (CSC). Continued refinements in predicting the pre-biopsy probability of CSC are essential for optimal patient counseling. We investigated potential factors related to improved cancer detection rates (CDR) of CSC in patients with PI-RADS ≥ 3 lesions.

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is a rare, pustular rash that occurs most commonly after exposure to a medication (typically antibiotics or diltiazem). This case describes a patient who developed a widespread pustular eruption shortly after beginning empiric antibiotics for community-acquired pneumonia. Diagnosis of AGEP was difficult in this scenario due to the patient's pulmonary infection and atypical skin biopsy results.

Endometrial cancer PDX-derived organoids (PDXOs) and PDXs with FGFR2c isoform expression are sensitive to FGFR inhibition.

NPJ Precis Oncol

December 2023

Endometrial Cancer Laboratory, School of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Health, the Queensland University of Technology located at the Translational Research Institute (TRI), PA Hospital Campus, 37 Kent St Woolloongabba, Brisbane, 4102, QLD, Australia.

Endometrial cancer (EC) patients with metastatic/recurrent disease have limited treatment options and poor survival outcomes. Recently, we discovered the FGFR2c splice isoform is associated with poor prognosis in EC patients. Here we report the establishment of 16 EC patient-derived xenografts (PDX)-derived organoids (PDXOs) with or without FGFR2c expression.

Impact of an Interprofessional HIV Quality Improvement Team on Patient Care and Resident Learning Opportunities.

PRiMER

September 2023

Family Medicine Residency, UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh, PA | Department of Pharmacy, UPMC Presbyterian-Shadyside, Pittsburgh, PA.

Introduction: Although human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care is a recommended competency for family medicine training, many programs report a lack of HIV expertise among faculty. After the departure of faculty with HIV care experience, an interprofessional HIV quality improvement team (HIV-QIT) of physicians and pharmacists aimed to maintain on-site HIV care and retain learning opportunities for residents, using process improvement and panel reviews with a remote HIV specialist faculty member.

Methods: This study reports on a multicycle quality improvement pilot project with pre- and postintervention chart reviews between December 2019 and May 2021.

Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 2 Isoforms Detected via Novel RNA ISH as Predictive Biomarkers for Progestin Therapy in Atypical Hyperplasia and Low-Grade Endometrial Cancer.

Cancers (Basel)

April 2021

School of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Health, Queensland University of Technology, Translational Research Institute, Princess Alexandra (PA) Hospital Campus, 37 Kent St., Woolloongabba, Brisbane, Queensland 4102, Australia.

Women with atypical hyperplasia (AH) or well-differentiated early-stage endometrioid endometrial carcinoma (EEC) who wish to retain fertility and/or with comorbidities precluding surgery, are treated with progestin. Clinically approved predictive biomarkers for progestin therapy remain an unmet need. The objectives of this study were to document the overall response rate (ORR) of levonorgestrel intrauterine device (LNG-IUD) treatment, and determine the association of FGFR2b and FGFR2c expression with treatment outcome.

FGFR2c Mesenchymal Isoform Expression Is Associated with Poor Prognosis and Further Refines Risk Stratification within Endometrial Cancer Molecular Subtypes.

Clin Cancer Res

September 2020

Queensland University of Technology, School of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Health, Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, located at the Translational Research Institute, PA Hospital Campus, 37 Kent St Woolloongabba, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Purpose: The two most common molecular subtypes of endometrial cancers, mismatch repair deficient (MMRd) and p53 wild-type (p53wt) comprise the majority of endometrial cancers and have intermediate prognoses where additional risk stratification biomarkers are needed. Isoform switching of FGFR2 from FGFR2b to FGFR2c (normally expressed in mesenchymal cells), has been reported in other solid carcinomas. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of FGFR2c in risk stratification of endometrial cancer.

Reactive arthritis, also known as Reiter syndrome, is a spondyloarthropathy that typically follows a urogenital or gastrointestinal infection, and is characterized by conjunctivitis, urethritis, and arthritis. The frequency of reactive arthritis in the United States is estimated at 3.5 to 5 patients per 100,000.

Medulloblastoma is the most common malignant solid tumor in childhood and the most common embryonal neuroepithelial tumor of the central nervous system. Several morphological variants are recognized: classic medulloblastoma, large cell/anaplastic medulloblastoma, desmoplastic/nodular medulloblastoma, and medulloblastoma with extensive nodularity. Recent advances in transcriptome and methylome profiling of these tumors led to a molecular classification that includes 4 major genetically defined groups.

Background: Stable plasma nitric oxide (NO) metabolites (NO), composed predominantly of nitrate and nitrite, are attractive biomarkers of NO bioavailability. NO levels integrate the influence of NO-synthase-derived NO production/metabolism, dietary intake of inorganic nitrate/nitrite, and clearance of NO. Furthermore, nitrate and nitrite, the most abundant NO, can be reduced to NO via the nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway.

The efficacy of rib-based distraction with VEPTR in the treatment of early-onset scoliosis in patients with arthrogryposis.

*Campbell Clinic, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, Memphis, TN †Children's Hospital ∥Shriners Hospital, Philadelphia, PA ‡Hospital de la Concepcion, San German, PR §Boston Children's Hospital, Boston, MA ¶Shriners Hospital, Portland, OR.

Background: Although arthrogryposis multiplex congenital (AMC) is a rare condition, rapidly progressive scoliosis is common in children with AMC. Only a limited number of studies characterize the nature of these curves, and even fewer describe surgical outcomes. To determine efficacy or rib-based distraction in these patients, we reviewed the outcomes of the use of the Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib (VEPTR) device in what we believe is the first study to report this.

Goals: To evaluate the predictive value of complete early virological response (cEVR) on sustained virological response (SVR) following retreatment with peginterferon alpha-2a (40 kDa) plus ribavirin in previous nonresponders to peginterferon alpha-2b (12 kDa).

Background: In the randomized multinational retreatment with Pegasys in patients not responding to PegIntron therapy study, a 72-week regimen of peginterferon alpha-2a (40 kDa) plus ribavirin improved SVR rates over a standard 48-week regimen in previous nonresponders to peginterferon alpha-2b (12 kDa). cEVR, defined as hepatitis C virus RNA <50 IU/mL at treatment week 12, was an important predictor of SVR.

Department of Medicine, PA Hospital, University of Queensland, Brisbane 4012, Australia.

The development of cardiovascular drugs appears to have gained further momentum over recent years. Many previous and ongoing studies have focused on outcomes with various interventions, but cardiac imaging techniques are developing to the extent that the physiological processes that they measure may be used as alternative study endpoints. Certainly, assessment of physiological parameters appears to be of considerable prognostic value.
