Amyand hernias are unusual inguinal hernias that contain the vermiform appendix. Rarely, an Amyand hernia can be complicated by acute appendicitis and present a diagnostic dilemma. Herein, we present the case of a complicated Amyand hernia that was initially diagnosed as an incarcerated inguinal hernia.

Synovial sarcoma is a rare malignant mesenchymal tumour typically found in the extremities, but it can also develop in the gastrointestinal tract, with the upper rectum being the most common site. We describe a case of a man in his 60s diagnosed with monophasic synovial sarcoma in the lower rectum, presenting with severe, intractable anal pain.

Neuroendocrine tumour of the urinary bladder.

We report a rare case of urinary bladder neuroendocrine tumour (NET) in a young, non-smoking man. He had no known risk factors and no comorbidities. After being diagnosed with a bladder tumour while being investigated for flank pain and poor renal function, he was treated with transurethral resection of the bladder tumour and deroofing of ureters bilaterally.

Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a leading cause of general surgery inpatient admissions. SBO is most commonly associated with postoperative adhesions; however, neoplastic SBO is an important differential. Here, we present a case of neoplastic SBO secondary to leiomyosarcoma in a patient with known mature B cell lymphoma.

Excipient lung disease (ELD) is a rare cause of pulmonary hypertension that occurs due to the intravenous injection of crushed tablets. We present the case of a healthcare professional in her late 30s who presented with a fever in the setting of a bacteraemia. During her hospital admission, she established a pattern of transient hypoxia and hypotension, with resolution without targeted management or clear cause identified.

Human chorionic gonadotropin-secreting osteosarcoma.

Secretion of beta human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) is a rare, recently recognised paraneoplastic syndrome. Herein, we present a case of a woman in her 30s with right femur conventional high-grade osteosarcoma and a positive screening urine pregnancy test. Subsequent workup failed to reveal an intrauterine or extrauterine pregnancy.

Unusual presentation of brisk active small bowel bleeding from jejunal GIST.

This case emphasises the difficulties in diagnosing a patient with brisk active small bowel bleeding and the differential diagnostic process of identifying tumour types preoperatively using imaging information. This case also underscores the importance of the surgical approach in different scenarios. Despite advancements in small bowel imaging, identifying the source and causes of small bowel bleeding remains challenging, particularly in life-threatening situations.

Pituitary stalk interruption syndrome with coexistent focal cortical dysplasia in a young boy.

This case report provides details of the first documented case of pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS) with coexistent focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) in a young boy. The child's initial presentation was an afebrile, generalised tonic-clonic seizure associated with postictal drowsiness. During his first episode, the physical examination revealed a short, obese child with a micropenis and left cryptorchidism.

Trend, clinical characteristics, and pregnancy outcomes of pregnancy associated venous thromboembolism: a retrospective analysis of nearly 10 years.

Background: Pregnancy-associated venous thromboembolism (PA-VTE) seriously threatens maternal health. We aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics, risk factors, treatments, and pregnancy outcomes to better prevent and treat PA-VTE.

Methods: PA-VTE patients were selected from 171,898 women who were registered in the Department of Obstetrics of Fujian Maternity and Child Health Hospital from January 2014 to August 2023 and delivered to calculate the incidence.

Patches containing quercetin microcapsules to ameliorate dermal herpes simplex virus injuries in mice.

This study aimed to develop patches containing quercetin-loaded microcapsules and to evaluate their in vitro and in vivo safety and efficacy in preclinical surveys. Embryonal tumors with multilayered rosettes (ETMRs) are rare and highly aggressive embryonal central nervous system tumors that predominantly affect infants younger than 3 years old. These tumors typically have a C19MC alteration (ETMR, C19MC-altered) or, more rarely, a DICER1 mutation (ETMR, DICER1-mutated). Post-chemotherapeutic or post-chemoradiotherapeutic histological changes of C19MC-altered ETMRs, such as maturation or loss of histological characteristics of ETMR have been described in several reports.
