Permeance-selectivity trade-offs are inherent to polymeric membranes. In fuel cells, thinner proton exchange membranes (PEMs) could enable higher proton conductance and increased power density with lower area-specific resistance (ASR), smaller ohmic losses, and lower ionomer cost. However, reducing thickness is accompanied by an increase in undesired species crossover harming performance and long-term efficiency.

Atomically thin 2D materials present the potential for advancing membrane separations via a combination of high selectivity (from molecular sieving) and high permeance (due to atomic thinness). However, the creation of a high density of precise nanopores (narrow-size-distribution) over large areas in 2D materials remains challenging, and nonselective leakage from nanopore heterogeneity adversely impacts performance. Here, we demonstrate protein-enabled size-selective defect sealing (PDS) for atomically thin graphene membranes over centimeter scale areas by leveraging the size and reactivity of permeating proteins to preferentially seal larger nanopores (≥4 nm) while preserving a significant amount of smaller nanopores (via steric hindrance).

The Stewart platform, renowned for its remarkable dexterity, high stiffness, and positioning accuracy, is increasingly employed in a wide range of applications. For the Stewart platform, a novel adaptive super-twisting based smooth integral sliding mode controller (ASTSISMC) is suggested through modifications to the integral sliding mode algorithm. Specifically, the discontinuous portion of the integral sliding mode control law is replaced by the super-twisting control to ensure smooth cumulative control.

Background: Currently licensed and approved malaria subunit vaccines provide modest, short-lived protection against malaria. Immunization with live-attenuated malaria parasites is an alternative vaccination strategy that has potential to improve protection.
Methods: We conducted a double-blind, controlled clinical trial to evaluate the safety, side-effect profile, and efficacy of immunization, by means of mosquito bites, with a second-generation genetically attenuated parasite (GA2) - a single knockout NF54 parasite (sporozoite form) with extended development into the liver stage.

Background: Cardiac troponin (cTn) is key in diagnosing myocardial infarction (MI). After MI, the clinically observed half-life of cTn has been reported to be 7 to 20 hours, but this estimate reflects the combined elimination and simultaneous release of cTn from cardiomyocytes. More precise timing of myocardial injuries necessitates separation of these 2 components.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to present the covered endovascular reconstruction of the iliac artery bifurcation (CERIB) technique as a revascularization option for aorto-iliac occlusive disease (AIOD) involving the iliac artery bifurcation.
Methods: This was a retrospective single-center study including all patients undergoing a CERIB procedure from January 2021 until December 2022. Covered endovascular reconstruction of the iliac artery bifurcation procedures were performed percutaneously with bilateral femoral access, excepting cases where simultaneous open femoral artery reconstruction was required due to the extension of peripheral arterial occlusive disease.

A serum ferritin level <15 to 20 μg/L historically identified patients who had absent bone marrow iron stores, but serum ferritin levels are distorted by the systemic inflammatory states seen in patients with chronic kidney disease or heart failure. As a result, nearly 25 years ago, the diagnostic ferritin threshold was increased 5- to 20-fold in patients with chronic kidney disease (ie, iron deficiency was identified if the serum ferritin level was <100 μg/L, regardless of transferrin saturation [TSAT], or 100 to 299 μg/L if TSAT was <20%). This guidance was motivated not by the findings of studies of total body or tissue iron depletion, but by a desire to encourage the use of iron supplements to potentiate the response to erythropoiesis-stimulating agents in patients with renal anemia.

Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) is a genetically determined causal risk factor for cardiovascular disease including coronary heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, ischaemic stroke, and calcific aortic valve stenosis. Clinical trials of specific and potent Lp(a)-lowering drugs are currently underway. However, in clinical practice, widespread assessment of Lp(a) is still lacking despite several guideline recommendations to measure Lp(a) at least once in a lifetime in all adults to identify those at high or very high risk due to elevated levels.

Background: Despite chronic therapies, atrial fibrillation (AF) leads to rapid ventricular rates (RVR) often requiring intravenous treatments. Etripamil is a fast-acting, calcium-channel blocker administered intranasally affecting the atrioventricular node within minutes.
Methods: Reduction of Ventricular Rate in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation evaluated the efficacy and safety of etripamil for the reduction of ventricular rate (VR) in patients presenting urgently with AF-RVR (VR ≥110 beats per minute [bpm]), was randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, and conducted in Canada and the Netherlands.
Immune checkpoint blockade is effective for some patients with cancer, but most are refractory to current immunotherapies and new approaches are needed to overcome resistance. The protein tyrosine phosphatases PTPN2 and PTPN1 are central regulators of inflammation, and their genetic deletion in either tumour cells or immune cells promotes anti-tumour immunity. However, phosphatases are challenging drug targets; in particular, the active site has been considered undruggable.

Amplification of the () gene is a mechanism of acquired resistance to epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-tyrosine-kinase-inhibitors (TKIs) in over 20% of patients with advanced -mutated (m+) non-small lung cancer (NSCLC). However, it may also occur de novo in 2-8% of m+ NSCLC cases as a potential mechanism of intrinsic resistance. These patients represent a group with unmet needs, since there is no standard therapy currently approved.

Background And Purpose: Infarct evolution after endovascular treatment varies widely among patients with stroke and may be affected by baseline characteristics and procedural outcomes. Moreover, IV alteplase and endovascular treatment may influence the relationship of these factors to infarct evolution. We aimed to assess whether the infarct evolution between baseline and follow-up imaging was different for patients who received IVT and EVT versus EVT alone.

Prokinetic agents, specifically 5-hydroxytryptamine type 4 (5-HT 4 ) receptor agonists, have been shown to provide relief in chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC). The first-generation 5-HT 4 agonists were initially withdrawn from use owing to associations with serious cardiovascular (CV) events. This review summarizes CV safety data for prucalopride, a high-affinity 5-HT 4 agonist approved in the United States in 2018 for adults with CIC.

Background: A larger thrombus in patients with acute ischemic stroke might result in more complex endovascular treatment procedures, resulting in poorer patient outcomes. Current evidence on thrombus volume and length related to procedural and functional outcomes remains contradicting. This study aimed to assess the prognostic value of thrombus volume and thrombus length and whether this relationship differs between first-line stent retrievers and aspiration devices for endovascular treatment.

Aims: Recent evidence suggest that the lipoprotein(a)-associated risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) may be observed only in individuals with low-grade systemic inflammation. It was hypothesized that high lipoprotein(a) is a main driver for the risk of ASCVD, myocardial infarction, and aortic valve stenosis irrespective of C-reactive protein levels.
Methods And Results: A total of 68 090 individuals from the Copenhagen General Population Study, a prospective cohort study, were included.

Background: Oral and intravenous flecainide is recommended for cardioversion of atrial fibrillation. In this open-label, dose-escalation study, the feasibility of delivering flecainide via oral inhalation (flecainide acetate inhalation solution) for acute conversion was evaluated. We hypothesized that flecainide delivered by oral inhalation would quickly reach plasma concentrations sufficient to restore sinus rhythm in patients with recent-onset atrial fibrillation.
