Objective: To study child mental health, parental support, and social support of children with epilepsy as these relate to quality of life (QOL) using child self-report, seizure-related variables, and estimated verbal intelligence based on receptive vocabulary.
Methods: A cross-sectional structural equation model of baseline data from the QUALITÉ cohort study, which includes 6 Canadian child epilepsy ambulatory programs. A sample of 3,481 children were screened for the following eligibility: 8 to 14 years of age, with active or medication-managed epilepsy.

Background: The cause of acute uncomplicated cystitis is determined on the basis of cultures of voided midstream urine, but few data guide the interpretation of such results, especially when gram-positive bacteria grow.
Methods: Women from 18 to 49 years of age with symptoms of cystitis provided specimens of midstream urine, after which we collected urine by means of a urethral catheter for culture (catheter urine). We compared microbial species and colony counts in the paired specimens.

Background: This study aimed to externally validate a previously described nomogram that predicts the need for renal exploration in the trauma setting.
Methods: The predicted probability of nephrectomy was manually calculated using prospectively collected data from consecutive patients with renal trauma who presented to our institution between May 2001 and January 2010. To assess nomogram performance, receiver operating characteristic curves against the observed exploration rate were generated, and areas under the curve were calculated.

Background: The effect of β-blockers on infarct size when used in conjunction with primary percutaneous coronary intervention is unknown. We hypothesize that metoprolol reduces infarct size when administered early (intravenously before reperfusion).
Methods And Results: Patients with Killip class II or less anterior ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention within 6 hours of symptoms onset were randomized to receive intravenous metoprolol (n=131) or not (control, n=139) before reperfusion.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the benefit from antibiotic prophylaxis (AP) during cholecystectomy in a population-based cohort study.
Methods: All cholecystectomies performed in Uppsala County, 2003-2005, were registered prospectively according to a standardized protocol. High-risk procedures (HP) were defined as operations for acute cholecystitis and procedures including exploration of the common bile duct.

Zygotic hypocotyls of canola (Brassica napus L.) cv Oscar, cv Westar, and the breeding line UGA188-20B were transformed with a truncated synthetic Bacillus thuringiensis insecticidal crystal protein gene (Bt cryIAc) under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter using Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. Fifty-seven independently transformed lines were produced, containing 1 to 12 copies of the transgenes.
