Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on αVβ3 integrins, which are often overexpressed in cancer, particularly in relation to tumor blood vessel formation (angiogenesis), and explores the use of integrin antagonists as diagnostic tools.
  • Researchers optimized the radiolabeling of a specific peptidomimetic known as IAC and tested its utility as a radiopharmaceutical for PET imaging in breast cancer patients.
  • Results indicated high radiochemical purity of the synthesized agents, effective binding to the αVβ3 receptor, and demonstrated that [Ga]Ga-DOTAGA-IAC effectively detected tumors in all five patients, suggesting its potential as a promising imaging agent for cancer diagnosis.

Diaphyseal forearm fractures are typically treated with open reduction and plate fixation, which has been proven to be the most effective method in numerous trials. However, the risk of periosteal stripping, haemorrhage evacuation, nonunion, and infection is always present and may cause a delayed union and other surgical consequences. Although intramedullary nails have been mentioned in the literature for forearm bone fractures, issues regarding their common complication of nail migration, especially of the ulnar fracture, before the fracture has been consolidated is an issue, and has not been addressed.

Debate 2: Is the Management of Childhood Empyema Primarily Medical, or Surgical?

Indian J Pediatr

September 2023

Department of Pediatric Surgery, Advanced Pediatrics Centre, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (P.G.I.M.E.R.), Chandigarh, 160012, India.

The management of empyema thoracis has changed in the past 1-2 decades with the advent of video-assisted thoracoscopy (VATS), the surgeon's weapon and fibrinolytic agents, the physician's weapon. Inappropriate use of either and inability to accept their failure in some cases cause prolonged morbidity in an unsuspecting patient. VATS has been shown to be very effective in stage 2 empyema and is associated with early amelioration of symptoms and early discharge from hospital.

Introduction: Seizures are one of the most common neurological emergencies encountered in both urban and rural India. There is only limited research work on the etiology of new-onset seizures in adult patients of different age groups presenting to the emergency department, especially from the Indian sub-continent. A new-onset seizure can be the first presentation of stroke, or it may be a symptom of brain infections, metabolic abnormality, brain tumor, systemic disease, or an early phase of epilepsy, which needs scrutiny and appropriate management.

Background: Intravenous calcium channel blockers or beta-blockers are the preferred rate control medications for hemodynamically stable patients with atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular rate (AF-RVR) in the emergency department.

Objectives: To compare the efficacy of intravenous diltiazem and metoprolol for rate control and safety with respect to development of hypotension and bradycardia in patients with AF-RVR.

Methods: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane databases, and the clinicaltrials.

Altered resting state functional connectivity in early course schizophrenia.

Psychiatry Res Neuroimaging

January 2018

Department of Psychiatry and De-addiction, Center of Excellence in Mental Health, P.G.I.M.E.R.-Dr.R.M.L. Hospital, New Delhi, India. Electronic address:

Impaired connectivity is proposed to underlie pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Existing studies on functional connectivity show inconsistent results. We examined functional connectivity in a clinically homogenous sample of 34 early course schizophrenia patients compared with/to 19 healthy controls using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI).

Skin GVHD Mimicking Betadine Rash in a Post Allogeneic Transplant Patient.

Indian J Hematol Blood Transfus

September 2017

Department of Internal Medicine, P.G.I.M.E.R, Chandigarh, U.T 160012 India.

A 32-years-old male developed exfoliating skin lesions in bilateral axillae and groins on D-42 post matched sibling allogeneic transplant. These lesions masqueraded betadine burns with a positive history of betadine application in the affected regions. He gradually developed lesions involving other parts of the body with Glucksberg grade-IV acute GVHD (skin-stage: IV/gut-stage: III).

Purpose: To compare the outcome of allogenic ex vivo cultivated limbal stem cell transplantation (LSCT) versus cadaveric keratolimbal allograft in patients with limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD).

Methods: In this prospective interventional study from Army Hospital Research and Referral in New Delhi, 50 eyes of 40 patients with ocular surface disorder having LSCD underwent either cultivated LSCT (group 1: 25 eyes of 20 patients) or keratolimbal allograft transplantation (group 2: 25 eyes of 20 patients). The outcome measures were gain of two or more lines of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), absence of conjunctival vascularization over cornea, corneal neovascularization regression, regression of visually significant corneal opacity (iris details poorly visible), Schirmer's 1 ≥10 s, tear break-up time (TBUT) ≥10 s, and absence of fluorescein staining.
