Background: Radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation is one of the most common strategies for the current management of cavotricuspid isthmus (CTI)-dependent atrial flutter (AFL). The interindividual anatomic variability can influence the duration and outcome of ablation procedure.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to establish complication rates in patients undergoing RF catheter ablation for CTI-dependent AFL, assess the role of CTI morphology in procedural success, and determine the anatomic variability of CTI ex vivo.

The use of generic drugs after patent expiration of their originators is a relative novelty in the treatment of chronic cancer patients in Western countries. In this observational study we analyzed a cohort of 294 Italian chronic phase chronic myeloid leukemia patients treated frontline with branded imatinib (Glivec®) for at least 6 months and then uniformly switched to generic imatinib upon requirement of health authorities in early 2017. Median age at diagnosis was 57 years (range 19-87).

Second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors (2G-TKIs) dasatinib and nilotinib produced historical rates of about 50% complete cytogenetic response (CCyR) and about 40% major molecular response (MMR) in chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) patients failing imatinib. Direct comparisons between dasatinib and nilotinib are lacking, and few studies addressed the dynamics of deep molecular response (DMR) in a "real-life" setting. We retrospectively analyzed 163 patients receiving dasatinib ( = 95) or nilotinib ( = 68) as second-line therapy after imatinib.

The aim of this study was to assess the quality of reporting of nurse-driven randomized controlled trials involving a direct nutritional intervention. A bibliometric search for randomized controlled trials involving a direct nutritional intervention from 1991 to 2011 in nursing research was conducted. Both quality of the study and design aspects were evaluated.

Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) offer the potential to prevent sudden cardiac death and demonstrated a survival benefit in high risk cardiac patients. ICD implantation rates vary significantly throughout the countries all over Europe although there are no major differences in cardiovascular morbidity among countries. ICD implantation rates in each European country may be influenced by economic factors, including the gross domestic product, its percentage devoted to public health, and organization of the health system.

Purpose: An optimal active-can lead configuration during implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) placement is important to obtain an adequate defibrillation safety margin. The purpose of this multicenter study was to evaluate the rate of the first shock success at defibrillation testing according to the type of lead implant (single vs. dual coil) and shock polarity (cathodal and anodal) in a large series of consecutive patients who received transvenous ICDs.

Introduction: Extracorporeal ileocolic anastomosis in laparoscopic right hemicolectomy for cancer has a significant risk of complications. The aim of this study is to evaluate the operative and postoperative results of hybrid right hemicolectomy with intracorporeal robotic-assisted anastomosis for adenocarcinoma of the ascending colon compared with the standard extracorporeal anastomosis in a case control study.
Patients And Methods: Forty-eight right hemicolectomies for cancer (2009-2012) with laparoscopic medial to lateral dissection, vascular ligation, bowel transection, and robotic-assisted intracorporeal anastomosis with specimen extraction through a Pfannestiel incision (robotic group [RG]) were compared with 48 laparoscopic hemicolectomies (2009-2011) with extracorporeal anastomosis (laparoscopic group [LG]).

Background: Concomitant chemoradiotherapy (CT/RT) is the standard treatment of locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN). We evaluated the efficacy of induction docetaxel (Taxotere), cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil (TPF) before CT/RT versus CT/RT alone.
Patients And Methods: Patients with stage III-IVM0 SCCHN, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of zero to one, were randomly assigned to receive CT/RT alone (arm A: two cycles of cisplatin 20 mg/m(2), days1-4, plus 5-fluorouracil 800 mg/m(2)/day 96 h continuous infusion, during weeks 1 and 6 of radiotherapy) or three cycles of TPF (arm B: docetaxel 75 mg/m(2) and cisplatin 80 mg/m(2), day 1, and 5-fluorouracil 800 mg/m(2)/day 96 h continuous infusion, every 3 weeks) followed by the same CT/RT.

Objective: A detailed definition of pulmonary vein (PV) anatomy is of great importance in patients undergoing radiofrequency catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation. In fact, it is known that variations in the number and anatomy of the PV ostia are more frequent than thought. The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness of transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) in defining the exact PV anatomy by comparing it with magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), which is proven to be very accurate.

Background: Heart disease is the main cause of death among uremic patients (pts). Our study aimed to assess left ventricular (LV) systolic and diastolic function in all of our pts on renal replacement therapy (RRT), investigating any differences between hemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis (PD) and transplantation (TX) pts.
Methods: All pts on RRT at our nephrology unit were enrolled in the study and evaluated once over a period of 6 months: 125 pts were studied: 61 pts on HD, 30 pts on PD and 34 TX pts.

Background: Ostial radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) of pulmonary veins (PVs) is a promising invasive approach for the non-pharmacologic treatment of atrial fibrillation, but PV stenosis has been reported as a possible complication of this intervention. The aim of this study was to assess PV anatomy and stenosis (i.e.

We describe the case of 2 patients presenting with chest pain and electrocardiographic signs of myocardial ischemia, in whom a transthoracic echocardiogram, performed urgently at the bedside, allowed a diagnosis of dissection of the ascending aorta. Prompt recognition of this condition avoided inappropriate aggressive medical treatments and permitted emergency surgical intervention. Aortic dissection can mimic other conditions including an acute coronary syndrome.

Stroke in children is a rare condition and has a multifactorial etiology. The association between ischemic stroke in young adults and some minor cardiac abnormalities such as atrial septal aneurysm with or without interatrial shunting has recently been reported: however, the pathogenetic mechanism still remains unclear. Genetic and acquired prothrombotic disorders are also risk factors for cerebral ischemic events in children.

Symptoms can markedly influence the hemodialysis patients well-being and quality of life. The aim of this paper is to study the frequency of symptoms at home and how these relate to biochemical and treatment variables. Seventy-three hemodialysis patients were questioned on the absence, occasional presence or daily recurrence (score = 0, 1, 2) of 14 symptoms and a record was made of their biochemical parameters, age, time on treatment and KtIV as a function of each symptom.

An automated procedure for the determination of serum gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase using Technicon SMAC alkaline phosphatase flow channel has been developed. The flow variants are insignificant. We use L-gamma-glutamyl-3-carboxy-4-nitroanilide as a very soluble substrate.
