Silver(I) complexes with proline and hydroxyproline were synthesized and structurally characterized and crystal structure analysis shows that the formulas of the compounds are {[Ag(Pro)(NO)]NO} (AgPro) (Pro = L-proline) and {[Ag(Hyp)(NO)]NO} (AgHyp) (Hyp = -4-hydroxy-L-proline). Both complexes crystallize in the monoclinic lattice with space group 2 with a carboxylate bidentate-bridging coordination mode of the organic ligands Pro and Hyp (with NH and COO groups in zwitterionic form). Both complexes have a distorted seesaw (C) geometry around one silver(I) ion with values of 58% (AgPro) and 51% (AgHyp).

Background: Infant mortality rates are reliable indices of the child and general population health status and health care delivery. The most critical factors affecting infant mortality are socioeconomic status and ethnicity. The aim of this study was to assess the association between socioeconomic disadvantage, ethnicity, and perinatal, neonatal, and infant mortality in Slovakia before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Due to the increasing demand for energy storage devices, the development of high-energy density batteries is very necessary. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have gained wide interest due to their particularly high-energy density. However, even this type of battery still needs to be improved.

Polyphenolic compounds play an essential role in plant growth, reproduction, and defense mechanisms against pathogens and environmental stresses. Extracting these compounds is the initial step in assessing phytochemical changes, where the choice of extraction method significantly influences the extracted analytes. However, due to environmental factors, analyzing numerous samples is necessary for statistically significant results, often leading to the use of harmful organic solvents for extraction.

Although more than 10% of the human genome has the potential to fold into non-B DNA, the formation of non-canonical structural motifs as part of long dsDNA chains are usually considered as unfavorable from a thermodynamic point of view. However, recent experiments have confirmed that non-canonical motifs do exist and are non-randomly distributed in genomic DNA. This distribution is highly dependent not only on the DNA sequence but also on various other factors such as environmental conditions, DNA topology and the expression of specific cellular factors in different cell types.

Objectives: This study aims to compare selected early childhood health risks and health outcomes of children from marginalized Roma communities (MRCs) in Slovakia with those of the majority.
Methods: We obtained cross-sectional data from mother-child dyads from the majority (N = 109) and MRCs (N = 143) via questionnaires and from medical records. Socioeconomic status, health risks and health outcomes were compared using chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests in SPSS.

Two new complexes, bis-[4-amino-3,5-bis-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole-κ,]bis-(dicyanamide-κ)copper(II), [Cu(abpt)(dca)] (1) and bis-[4-amino-3,5-bis-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole-κ,]bis-(dicyanamide-κ)cobalt(II), [Co(abpt)(dca)] (2), have been prepared and magneto-structurally characterised. Single crystal studies of both complexes have shown that their crystal structures are molecular, in which the central atoms are six-coordinated in the form of a distorted octahedron by two bidentate abpt and two monodentate dca ligands. Even if both complexes have the same composition and crystallize in the same 1̄ space group, they are not isostructural.

Non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) is increasingly used as a treatment method for patients with respiratory failure. The first recommendations for the use of NIPPV in Slovakia were developed by the Slovak Society of Pulmonology and Phthisiology in 2007 and were partially revised in 2015. New scientific evidence prompted the present update, which is based on widely accepted international guidelines and was adapted to address local needs.

Flavin mononucleotide (FMN) is a highly efficient photosensitizer (PS) yielding singlet oxygen ( O ). However, its O production efficiency significantly decreases upon isoalloxazine ring encapsulation into the protein matrix in genetically encoded photosensitizers (GEPS). Reducing isoalloxazine ring interactions with surrounding amino acids by protein engineering may increase O production efficiency GEPS, but at the same time weakened native FMN-protein interactions may cause undesirable FMN dissociation.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common still relentlessly progressive neurodegenerative disorder with a long period in which the pathophysiological process is already spreading but cardinal motor symptoms are not present. This review outlines the major developments and milestones in our understanding of PD that have shaped the way we define this disorder. Past criteria and definitions of PD have been based on clinical motor manifestations enabling diagnosis of the disease only in later symptomatic stages.

Hypothyroidism is common, however, aspects of its treatment remain controversial. Our survey aimed at documenting treatment choices of European thyroid specialists and exploring how patients' persistent symptoms, clinician demographics, and geo-economic factors relate to treatment choices. Seventeen thousand two hundred forty-seven thyroid specialists from 28 countries were invited to participate in an online questionnaire survey.

Background: The Internet offers many opportunities for adolescents to facilitate their lives. However, its everyday use may lead to excessive behaviour, including addiction. Our aim was to assess the association between emotional and behavioural problems (EBP) and level of internet use, and whether gender moderates this association.

Background: Interventions to improve physical activity (PA) among adolescents continue to be a public health priority. To promote PA more effectively, we need to identify the main factors contributing to (not) engagement in PA in the perspective of adolescents themselves. Thus, we explored the barriers and enablers for sufficient moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in adolescents from their point of view.

Rationale: Persistent respiratory symptoms following Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) are associated with residual radiological changes in lung parenchyma, with a risk of development into lung fibrosis, and with impaired pulmonary function. Previous studies hinted at the possible efficacy of corticosteroids (CS) in facilitating the resolution of post-COVID residual changes in the lungs, but the available data is limited.
Aim: To evaluate the effects of CS treatment in post-COVID respiratory syndrome patients.

Caffeic acid (CA) is one of the most abundant natural compounds present in plants and has a broad spectrum of beneficial pharmacological activities. However, in some cases, synthetic derivation of original molecules can expand their scope. This study focuses on the synthesis of caffeic acid phosphanium derivatives with the ambition of increasing their biological activities.

Background: Emotional and behavioural problems (EBP) are the most common mental health issues during adolescence, and their incidence has increased in recent years. The system of care for adolescents with EBP is known to have several problems, making the provision of care less than optimal, and attention needs to be given to potential improvements. We, therefore, aimed to examine what needs to be done to improve the system of care for adolescents with EBP and to assess the urgency and feasibility of the proposed measures from the perspective of care providers.

Introduction: Idiopathic REM-sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is considered the most specific prodromal marker of Parkinson's disease (PD). With the need to improve early detection of prodromal α-synucleinopathies, several methods to identify peripheral α-synuclein (α-syn) pathology have been exploited in manifest and prodromal PD with varying diagnostic accuracy. Recently, a disease specific 5G4 antibody has been evaluated in skin biopsies of manifest PD patients.
