Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how different family structures (like living with one or two parents) affect physical activity (PA) levels in adolescents across 40 countries, revealing significant variations based on these structures and socioeconomic status (SES).
  • Results showed that boys living with one parent engage less in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) daily and vigorous physical activity (VPA) weekly, with siblings in the household positively influencing MVPA levels.
  • The findings highlight the importance of considering family dynamics in PA policies, especially in regions where single-parent households correlate with lower activity levels, prompting the need for targeted interventions.

Polyphenolic compounds play an essential role in plant growth, reproduction, and defense mechanisms against pathogens and environmental stresses. Extracting these compounds is the initial step in assessing phytochemical changes, where the choice of extraction method significantly influences the extracted analytes. However, due to environmental factors, analyzing numerous samples is necessary for statistically significant results, often leading to the use of harmful organic solvents for extraction.

DNA minicircles capable of forming a variety of non-canonical structural motifs.

Front Chem

March 2024

Department of Biochemistry, Institute of Chemistry, Faculty of Sciences, P. J. Šafárik University, Košice, Slovakia.

Although more than 10% of the human genome has the potential to fold into non-B DNA, the formation of non-canonical structural motifs as part of long dsDNA chains are usually considered as unfavorable from a thermodynamic point of view. However, recent experiments have confirmed that non-canonical motifs do exist and are non-randomly distributed in genomic DNA. This distribution is highly dependent not only on the DNA sequence but also on various other factors such as environmental conditions, DNA topology and the expression of specific cellular factors in different cell types.

Two new complexes, bis-[4-amino-3,5-bis-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole-κ,]bis-(dicyanamide-κ)copper(II), [Cu(abpt)(dca)] (1) and bis-[4-amino-3,5-bis-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole-κ,]bis-(dicyanamide-κ)cobalt(II), [Co(abpt)(dca)] (2), have been prepared and magneto-structurally characterised. Single crystal studies of both complexes have shown that their crystal structures are molecular, in which the central atoms are six-coordinated in the form of a distorted octahedron by two bidentate abpt and two monodentate dca ligands. Even if both complexes have the same composition and crystallize in the same 1̄ space group, they are not isostructural.

Flavin mononucleotide (FMN) is a highly efficient photosensitizer (PS) yielding singlet oxygen ( O ). However, its O production efficiency significantly decreases upon isoalloxazine ring encapsulation into the protein matrix in genetically encoded photosensitizers (GEPS). Reducing isoalloxazine ring interactions with surrounding amino acids by protein engineering may increase O production efficiency GEPS, but at the same time weakened native FMN-protein interactions may cause undesirable FMN dissociation.

Background: Interventions to improve physical activity (PA) among adolescents continue to be a public health priority. To promote PA more effectively, we need to identify the main factors contributing to (not) engagement in PA in the perspective of adolescents themselves. Thus, we explored the barriers and enablers for sufficient moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in adolescents from their point of view.
