Neoplastic transformation of B cells of the post-germinative center can lead to oncohematological dyscrasias, which often results in an abnormal production of monoclonal immunoglobulin light chains. The non-physiological production of large amounts of IgG light chains leads to the formation of extracellular deposits called 'aggregomas' and rare conditions such as light chain crystal deposition disease. Kidney manifestations and heavy-chain deposition disease can also occur in plasma cell dyscrasias, emphasizing the role of IgG misfolding and aggregation.

Neurons in the central nervous system (CNS) lose regenerative potential with maturity, leading to minimal corticospinal tract (CST) axon regrowth after spinal cord injury (SCI). In young rodents, knockdown of PTEN, which antagonises PI3K signalling by hydrolysing PIP3, promotes axon regeneration following SCI. However, this effect diminishes in adults, potentially due to lower PI3K activation leading to reduced PIP3.

Designing well-defined magnetic nanomaterials is crucial for various applications, and it demands a comprehensive understanding of their magnetic properties at the microscopic level. In this study, we investigate the contributions to the total anisotropy of Mn/Co mixed spinel nanoparticles. By employing neutron measurements sensitive to the spatially resolved surface anisotropy with sub-Å space resolution, we reveal an additional contribution to the anisotropy constant arising from shape anisotropy and interparticle interactions.

Purpose: Later sleep timing is a key determinant of reduced sleep duration and quality in adolescents and is associated with negative mental and physical outcomes. However, little is known about adolescents' views on late bedtime. The study's purpose is to explore adolescents' perspectives on why they go to sleep late during school nights and what would help them to go to bed earlier.

In the past decades, iron has been one of the intensively studied biodegradable metals due to its suitable mechanical properties, but it suffers from slow degradation in a physiological environment and low bioactivity. In this work, the beneficial properties of ceramic and polymer coatings were merged to enhance the corrosion properties and biological compatibility of Fe-based biomaterials. A new bilayer coating for Fe-based biomaterials that speeds up degradation while offering controlled, localized drug release to prevent infections was prepared.

The copper(II), cobalt(II), and zinc(II) complexes with 2-(1H-benzimidazol-2-ylmethylsulfanylmethyl)-1H-benzimidazole (tbb) and 2-[2-[2-(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)ethylsulfanyl]ethyl]-1H-benzimidazole (tebb), [Cu(tbb)Cl] (1), [Co(tbb)Cl] (2), [Zn(tbb)Cl] (3), [Cu(tebb)Cl(HO)]Cl (4), [Co(tebb)Cl]·nCHOH (5) and [Zn(tebb)Cl(HO)]Cl (6), have been prepared and evaluated for antiproliferative activity. The structure of (4) was proved by X-ray diffraction crystallography. The coordination compounds were tested for their cytotoxic activities in cancer cell lines in vitro.

Background: Spasticity is a common feature in patients with disruptions in corticospinal pathways. However, the term is used ambiguously. Here, spasticity is defined as enhanced velocity-dependent stretch reflexes and placed within the context of deforming spastic paresis encompassing other forms of muscle overactivity.

In this study, we employ spectroscopic, thermodynamic and molecular docking approaches to identify the mechanism by which thiazolidinone derivatives 4a-4d bind with human serum albumin. It has been suggested that the affinity of the interaction of derivatives 4a-4d with HSA is within the optimal range necessary for the transportation and distribution of compounds within the organism. The binding constant values for the derivative/HSA complexes were found to be 0.

The endorsement of conspiracy theories may be increased by subjectively perceived stress. Yet, it is not known whether this correlation is caused by the effects of the acute stress reaction on the brain or other psychological, social, or methodological factors. The effect of an experimentally induced acute stress reaction on conspiracy thinking was tested on a sample (n = 115) of students of medicine.

Light-Oxygen-Voltage (LOV) domains are the protein-based light switches used in nature to trigger and regulate various processes. They allow light signals to be converted into metabolic signaling cascades. Various LOV-domain proteins have been characterized in the last few decades and have been used to develop light-sensitive tools in cell biology research.

I study effects of q-order antinematic (AN_{q}) interactions on the critical behavior of the antiferromagnetic (AF) XY model on a square lattice. It is found that the evolution of the phase diagram topology of such AF-AN_{q} models with the parameter q does not follow the same line as for the corresponding FM-N_{q} models with the ferromagnetic (FM) and q-order nematic (N_{q}) interactions. Their phase diagrams are similar only for odd values of the parameter q.

This chapter explores the innovative application of machine learning techniques to understand and predict the stability of protein substructures. Accurately identifying stable substructures within proteins necessitates incorporating the local context, crucial for elucidating the roles of supersecondary structures. This approach emphasizes the importance of contextual information in understanding the stability and functionality of protein regions, thereby providing a more comprehensive view of protein mechanics and interactions.

Transport systems are developed to improve the solubility of the transported drug, increase its stability, enhance its pharmacological activity and target cancer while minimising side effects. In this work, nanoporous silica particles that can be functionalized and loaded with a large number of hydrophobic molecules are proposed. The designed system was modified with folic acid to target the folic acid receptors of cancer cells.

Plant species diversity may be considerably underestimated, especially in evolutionarily complex genera and in diversity hotspots that have enabled long-term species persistence and diversification, such as the Balkan Peninsula. Here, we address the topic of underexplored plant diversity and underlying evolutionary and biogeographic processes by investigating the hygrophytic mountain species complex of Cardamine acris s.l.

Flavin cofactors, flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and flavin mononucleotide (FMN), as a part of flavoenzymes play a critical role in the catalysis of multiple reactions predominantly of a redox nature. Question arises why nature developed two very similar cofactors with an identical functional part - isoalloxazine ring. We believe that an answer is related to the fact that the isoalloxazine ring belongs to endogenous photosensitizers able to produce reactive and potentially harmful singlet oxygen, O, with high efficiency, Φ ∼ 0.

Background: Health literacy is a core public health issue in relation to children and adolescents associated with multiple health behaviours and health outcomes. The aim of the study is to test the direct associations between health literacy, physical activity behaviour, health outcomes of body composition and cardiorespiratory fitness among Slovak adolescents and possible indirect effect of health literacy on health outcomes of body composition and cardiorespiratory fitness mediated by adolescents' physical activity behaviour.
Methods: Data from the Slovak Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study conducted in 2022 were used.
