Human evolution unfolded through a rather distinctive, dynamically constructed ecological niche. The human niche is not only generally terrestrial in habitat, while being flexibly and extensively heterotrophic in food-web connections. It is also defined by semiotically structured and structuring embodied cognitive interfaces, connecting the individual organism with the wider environment.

Validity conditions for stochastic chemical kinetics in diffusion-limited systems.

The chemical master equation (CME) and the mathematically equivalent stochastic simulation algorithm (SSA) assume that the reactant molecules in a chemically reacting system are "dilute" and "well-mixed" throughout the containing volume. Here we clarify what those two conditions mean, and we show why their satisfaction is necessary in order for bimolecular reactions to physically occur in the manner assumed by the CME and the SSA. We prove that these conditions are closely connected, in that a system will stay well-mixed if and only if it is dilute.

Do hookups hurt? Exploring college students' experiences and perceptions.

Introduction: Hookups refer to a range of sexual or physically intimate behaviors characterized by a lack of any expectation of a relationship or emotional intimacy. This study was designed to assess college students' experiences and perceptions about hookups as related to mental/emotional and physical health issues.

Methods: Students at a 2-year liberal arts college in the southeastern United States participated.

Synthesis and characterization of gold(III) complexes possessing 2,9-dialkylphenanthroline ligands: to bind or not to bind?

In an effort to discover potential alternatives to the anti-cancer drug cisplatin, the synthesis of gold(III) polypyridyl coordination complexes was pursued. Specifically, this report describes the synthesis and characterization of a series of 2,9-dialkyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Rphen) gold(III) coordination complexes (R = n-butyl, sec-butyl, and tert-butyl). Due to the steric hindrance imparted by the alkyl substituents, these ligands do not react with HAuCl4 to form square-planar gold(III) dichloride complex ions, as is the case with 1,10-phenanthroline, but instead form salts comprised of [AuCl(4)](-) anions and protonated 2,9-dialkylphenanthroline cations (compounds 1 and 2).

Effect of diet on dental development in four species of catarrhine primates.

The effect of experience and gender on cardiovascular and metabolic responses with dynamic Tae Kwon Do exercise.

This study, conducted at the Exercise Physiology Laboratory of Auburn University, AL, addressed and compared the acute cardiovascular and metabolic effects elicited by novice and experienced men and women participants during a single bout of dynamic Tae Kwon Do exercise and investigated whether or not dynamic Tae Kwon Do practice is an exercise modality that provides sufficient cardiorespiratory demand for enhancing aerobic fitness and promoting weight and fat loss. Twenty-eight men and women (aged 19-42) were assigned to 1 of the following 4 groups: Tae Kwon Do experienced and trained men (ME), Tae Kwon Do experienced and trained women (FE), novice Tae Kwon Do men (MN), and novice Tae Kwon Do women (FN). The results of this investigation indicate that this form of exercise can be performed for an extended period of 20 minutes.

Alterations in selected measures of mood with a single bout of dynamic Taekwondo exercise in college-age students.

This study was designed to investigate and to compare the acute alterations in selected measures of mood profile in novice Taekwondo practitioners while evaluating whether dynamic Taekwondo practice was an appropriate exercise modality for enhancing six psychological state dimensions: Vigor, Anxiety, Depression, Anger, Fatigue, and Confusion. 20 male and female college-age students enrolled in Taekwondo activity class and an additional 20 students enrolled in the lecture-con trol class (ages 18 to 21 years) completed the Profile of Mood States (POMS) inven tory prior to and immediately following one 75-min. session of dynamic Taekwondo or lecture.
