Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage ‎(aSAH) ‎accounts for 2-5% of all strokes, and 10%-15% of ‎aSAH patients will not survive until hospital admission. Induced hypertension (IH) is an emerging therapeutic option being used for the treatment of vasospasm in ‎aSAH. For patients with cerebral vasospasm (CVS) consequent to SAH, IH is implemented to increase systolic blood pressure (SBP) in order to optimize cerebral blood flow (CBF) and prevent delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI).

Purpose: The term "cerebrovascular diseases (CVDs)" refers to a broad category of diseases that affect the brain's blood vessels and cerebral circulation. Controlling acute hypertension (HTN) by antihypertensive drugs such as clevidipine and nicardipine can be a highly efficient method of lowering the incidence of CVDs.

Methods: This is a systematic review and meta-analysis study.

This study aimed to investigate the genetic basis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and polyarthralgia (PA) conditions among Indian subjects through genotyping two immune regulatory genes CD14 (-159C>T) and MIF (-173G>C) and find their association with the expression levels of three circulating inflammatory miRNAs. This investigation may provide early genetic cause of these two forms of arthritis and more optimal biological targets to predict early therapeutic outcomes. A total of 140 patients (AS: 70 and PA: 70) and 156 controls were recruited from Indian population.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a highly concentrated autologous solution of plasma prepared from a patient's own blood. PRP contains platelets that are purported to release numerous growth factors that may be valuable in numerous dermatologic applications. Here, we review systematically the clinical cosmetic applications of PRP including: androgenetic alopecia, scar revision, acne scars, skin rejuvenation, dermal augmentation, and striae distensae to understand the potential and best practices for PRP use.

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is an orphan disease characterized by the accumulation of excess of surfactant within alveoli and bronchioles. The primary form of PAP (P-PAP; also referred to as idiopathic or autoimmune) is the most common form. It is mediated through a circulating neutralizing antibody against granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor.

The health care industry is fast changing and rapid transformation is required to meet the ever-increasing needs and demands of its patient population. Hospitals and health care providers are shifting from viewing patients as uneducated with few health care choices to educated consumers with many service demands and health care choices available. An update on hepatic stem cells: bench to bedside.

Curr Pharm Biotechnol

February 2011

Centre For Liver Research and Diagnostics, Deccan College of Medical Sciences and Allied Hospitals, Owaisi Hospital and Research Centre, Kanchanbagh, Hyderabad, A.P, India.

Liver failure results in impairment of many functions and dependent organs such as brain and kidneys begin to fail, reducing the chance of recovery even further. Orthotopic liver transplantation (OLTx) is the only treatment that improves the survival rate in patients with liver failure. Liver Transplantation (LT), including orthologous liver transplantation (OLT), cadaveric LT, split LT, living donor LT (LDLT) brings hopes to patients with these diseases.

The object of the present study was to investigate the effect(s) of UV-B irradiation on the functional integrity, metabolic and detoxifying capacity of the isolated goat hepatocytes. Isolated goat hepatocytes were subjected to UV-B irradiation invitro for 0, 250, 500, 1250, 2500 and 7500 Joules/m2 which correspond to the irradiation time of 0, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 30 min. Cells were then analysed for Viability (Trypan blue exclusion test [TBE], 3-[4,5-dimethylthiozol-2yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide [MTT] assay, Membrane integrity (Lactate dehydrogenase [LDH] leakage, Lipid peroxidation) Detoxification (Ureagenesis, Cytochrome P450 activity [CYP450, Diazepam metabolism] and Glutathione-S-Transferase [GST] activity.

Hexavalent chromium is a well-known mutagen and carcinogen. In the present investigation, single-/double-stranded DNA breaks by potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) in mice, a sensitive model for genotoxic effects, have been studied in vivo using alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE)/comet assay. Mice were administered orally with a range of doses starting from 0.

Abnormal wound healing in humans leads to the formation of hypertrophic scar and keloids. These abnormal scars accumulate excessive extracellular matrix proteins through increased synthesis as well as decreased degradation. In order to find a therapeutic control for scar formation, we investigated the effect of avil (pheniramine maleate) on fibroblasts cultured from abnormal scars in comparison to normal skin.
