Understanding the relationship between infectious disease outbreaks and natural disasters is important in developing response and disaster risk reduction strategies. The aim of this study was to identify outbreaks associated with natural disasters during the past 20 y, and outline risk factors and mechanisms for postdisaster outbreaks. Review of the international disaster database (EM-DAT) and systematic review of the literature were conducted.

Spondyloarthritis is a group of immune-mediated rheumatic disorders that significantly impact patients' physical function and quality of life. Patients with spondyloarthritis experience a greater prevalence of cardiometabolic disorders, such as obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus, and these comorbidities are associated with increased spondyloarthritis disease activity and risk of cardiovascular events. This narrative review summarizes the evidence for a physiological link between inflammatory status and cardiometabolic comorbidities in spondyloarthritis, as well as the impact of interleukin (IL)-17 blockade versus other molecular mechanisms in patients with cardiometabolic conditions.

Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic had important consequences on the health system. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were a key element in the response and were forced to modify their daily procedures. The main objective of this study was to find out if there were differences in response times and in the profile of patients treated by the Advanced Life Support (ALS) units of Servicio de Asistencia Médica Urgente (SAMU)-Asturias, the EMS of the Principality of Asturias, between the pre-pandemic period and the pandemic period.

Background: Babesiosis is a globally growing tick-borne disease in humans. Severe babesiosis caused by Babesia divergens has been reported in two patients from Asturias (Northwestern Spain), suggesting an undetected risk for the disease. To analyze this risk, we retrospectively evaluated the seroprevalence of babesiosis in the Asturian population from 2015 through 2017, a period covering the intermediate years in which these two severe cases occurred.

COVID-19 lockdowns in early 2020 reduced human mobility, providing an opportunity to disentangle its effects on animals from those of landscape modifications. Using GPS data, we compared movements and road avoidance of 2300 terrestrial mammals (43 species) during the lockdowns to the same period in 2019. Individual responses were variable with no change in average movements or road avoidance behavior, likely due to variable lockdown conditions.

All animals host a microbial community within and on their reproductive organs, known as the reproductive microbiome. In free-living birds, studies on the sexual transmission of bacteria have typically focused on a few pathogens instead of the bacterial community as a whole, despite a potential link to reproductive function. Theory predicts higher sexual transmission of the reproductive microbiome in females via the males' ejaculates and higher rates of transmission in promiscuous systems.

The term osteomalacia (OM) refers to a series of processes characterized by altered mineralization of the skeleton, which can be caused by various disorders of mineral metabolism. OM can be genetically determined or occur due to acquired disorders, among which the nutritional origin is particularly relevant, due to its wide epidemiological extension and its nature as a preventable disease. Among the hereditary diseases associated with OM, the most relevant is X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH), which manifests in childhood, although its consequences persist into adulthood where it can acquire specific clinical characteristics, and, although rare, there are XLH cases that reach the third or fourth decade of life without a diagnosis.

Introduction: The prevalence of α1-antitrypsin PI*ZZ genotypes in patients with COPD is only partially known. We aimed to estimate this prevalence worldwide.
Method: A systematic review of the literature was conducted for studies investigating the prevalence of COPD and the prevalence of severe alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) PI*ZZ genotype.

Intraspecific communication in mammals is well-documented but generally restricted to chemical and acoustic signaling. However, other overlooked channels, such as visual signaling, may be used to communicate among conspecifics. Here, by using experimental manipulations together with camera traps on 13 brown bear () rubbing trees in the Cantabrian Mountains (northwestern Spain), we document detailed temporal patterns and behavioral aspects of a recently discovered novel communication channel for this species, visual signaling through the trunk debarking of focal trees.

Objective: We estimated the incidence rate of HIV medical care interruption (MCI) and its evolution over a 16-year-period, and identified associated risk factors among HIV-positive individuals from the Cohort of the Spanish AIDS Research Network in 2004-2020.
Design: We included antiretroviral-naive individuals aged at least 18 years at enrolment, recruited between January 1, 2004, and August 30, 2019, and followed-up until November 30, 2020.
Methods: Individuals with any time interval of at least 15 months between two visits were defined as having a MCI.

Background And Aims: Breastfeeding is recognized as one of the most influential drivers of the gut microbiome. In turn, alterations in the gut microbiome may play a role in the development and severity of spondyloarthritis (SpA). We aimed to analyze different disease outcomes in patients with axial SpA (axSpA) based on the history of breastfeeding.

Stephan Schätzl was the parish priest of Viechtwang, Upper Austria. He lived in the aftermath of the Peace of Augsburg in a period of schism between Roman Catholics and Lutherans. His portrait, depicted only 6 days before his demise in 1590, shows that he had extreme ante mortem cachexia.

Large carnivores have long fascinated human societies and have profound influences on ecosystems. However, their conservation represents one of the greatest challenges of our time, particularly where attacks on humans occur. Where human recreational and/or livelihood activities overlap with large carnivore ranges, conflicts can become particularly serious.

Genomes retain evidence of the demographic history and evolutionary forces that have shaped populations and drive speciation. Across island systems, contemporary patterns of genetic diversity reflect population demography, including colonization events, bottlenecks, gene flow and genetic drift. Here, we investigate genome-wide diversity and the distribution of runs of homozygosity (ROH) using whole-genome resequencing of individuals (>22× coverage) from six populations across three archipelagos of Berthelot's pipit (Anthus berthelotii)-a passerine that has recently undergone island speciation.

This work examines the possible behaviour of Neanderthal groups at the Cueva Des-Cubierta (central Spain) via the analysis of the latter's archaeological assemblage. Alongside evidence of Mousterian lithic industry, Level 3 of the cave infill was found to contain an assemblage of mammalian bone remains dominated by the crania of large ungulates, some associated with small hearths. The scarcity of post-cranial elements, teeth, mandibles and maxillae, along with evidence of anthropogenic modification of the crania (cut and percussion marks), indicates that the carcasses of the corresponding animals were initially processed outside the cave, and the crania were later brought inside.

The ecophysiological responses of species to urbanisation reveal important information regarding the processes of successful urban colonization and biodiversity patterns in urban landscapes. Investigating these responses will also help uncover whether synurban species are indeed urban 'winners'. Yet we still lack basic knowledge about the physiological costs and overall energy budgets of most species living in urban habitats, especially for mammals.

Introduction: Randomised clinical studies in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) do not always reflect patients in routine clinical practice. Large-scale data from routine practice are needed to better understand drug persistence, effectiveness and long-term safety of therapeutic agents.
Methods: PsABIOnd is an international, prospective, observational study designed to collect long-term routine care data in patients with PsA who receive guselkumab (an interleukin-23 [IL-23] inhibitor) or an interleukin-17 (IL-17) inhibitor.

Objective: The objective is to identify research priorities in prehospital care in Spain.
Method: This was a Delphi-type study of three rounds with a panel of experts made up of members of the Red de Investigación en Emergencias Prehospitalarias (RINVEMER; Prehospital Emergency Research Network) Network and the Sociedad Española de Medicina de Urgencias y Emergencias (SEMES; Spanish Society of Emergency Medicine) Emergency Secretariat. In the first round, each participant identified up to 15 priorities.
