Background: Social relationships are important health resources and may be investigated as social networks. We measured cancer patients' social subnetworks divided into generic social networks (people known to the patients) and disease-specific social networks (the persons talked to about the cancer) during 3 years after diagnosis.

Method: Newly diagnosed patients with localized breast cancer (n = 222), lymphoma (n = 102), and prostate cancer (n = 141) completed a questionnaire on their social subnetworks at 2-5 months after diagnosis and 9, 18, and 36 months thereafter.

Purpose: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the risk of parastomal (PSH) and incisional hernias (IH) after emergency surgery for Hinchey III-IV diverticulitis, with comparison between the Hartmann procedure and other surgical techniques.

Methods: The Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed (MEDLINE), Web of Science and Scopus databases were systematically searched. The primary endpoint was parastomal hernia incidence.

Background: Observational findings for high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-mediated cholesterol efflux capacity (HDL-CEC) and coronary heart disease (CHD) appear inconsistent, and knowledge of the genetic architecture of HDL-CEC is limited.

Objectives: A large-scale observational study on the associations of HDL-CEC and other HDL-related measures with CHD and the largest genome-wide association study (GWAS) of HDL-CEC.

Participants/methods: Six independent cohorts were included with follow-up data for 14,438 participants to investigate the associations of HDL-related measures with incident CHD (1,570 events).

Purpose: Free flap reconstructions following head and neck tumor resection are known to involve more than 50% rate of complications and other adverse events and up to 50% mortality during a 5-year follow-up. We aimed to examine the difference in the long-term quality of life (QoL) between the 2-year and 5-year assessments after free flap surgery for cancer of the head and neck.

Methods: A total of 28 of the 39 eligible patients responded to the survey.

Background: Modic changes (MC) in the lumbar spine are considered one potential etiological factor behind low back pain (LBP). Multiple risk factors for MC have been suggested, including male gender, smoking and factors affecting hyperloading and mechanical stress such as high body mass index (BMI), strenuous physical work and high occupational and leisure-time physical activity (PA). So far, the effect of PA on the occurrence of MC has remained under debate due to contradictory findings.

Background And Aims: Lateral-only Kirschner-wire pinning of supracondylar humerus fracture is superior in avoiding surgery-related ulnar nerve injury. Their disadvantageous effects on stability may be a consequence of inappropriate surgical techniques. We analyzed whether the surgeon's preference for lateral-only fixation is associated with his or her orthopedic competence.

Background: Infrapatellar fat pad (IFP) has recently emerged as a potential source of inflammation in knee arthropathies. It has been proposed to be one source of adipocytokines, fatty acids (FA), and FA-derived lipid mediators that could contribute to the pathophysiological processes in the knee joint. Alterations in synovial fluid (SF) lipid composition have been linked to both osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Purpose: Patient-reported outcome (PRO) follow-up has been shown to improve quality of life (QoL) and survival of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Kaiku Health application is a web-based electronic PRO (ePRO) tool which is designed for follow-up of cancer patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). Purpose of the current study is to investigate whether symptoms collected by Kaiku Health ePRO tool on cancer patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) follows to symptoms reported in clinical trials and whether coupling of specific symptoms does occur.

Adaptive Autoregressive Model for Reduction of Noise in SPECT.

Comput Math Methods Med

April 2016

Joint Authority for Päijät-Häme Social and Health Care, Department of Clinical Physiology and Nuclear Medicine, Keskussairaalankatu 7, 15850 Lahti, Finland.

This paper presents improved autoregressive modelling (AR) to reduce noise in SPECT images. An AR filter was applied to prefilter projection images and postfilter ordered subset expectation maximisation (OSEM) reconstruction images (AR-OSEM-AR method). The performance of this method was compared with filtered back projection (FBP) preceded by Butterworth filtering (BW-FBP method) and the OSEM reconstruction method followed by Butterworth filtering (OSEM-BW method).
