To determine the concentration of airborne RE antigens a method based on inhibition of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed. Safety in the use of four-wheeled all-terrain vehicles in Finland.

The aim of this study was to ascertain the use of four-wheeled all-terrain vehicles in Finland and estimate the safety in driving a four-wheeler. According to the importers there are about 3,000 four-wheelers in use in Finland. A questionnaire was sent to the owners of four-wheelers (n = 185), in which questions were asked about their use, protection used when driving, accidents that had occurred and suggestions for developing four-wheelers.

Prevention of accidents in reindeer herding work.

In the northern part of Finland we have about 450,000 reindeer and their raising gives work to about 3,500 reindeer herders. In this study data on the occupational accidents of herders were collected by two questionnaires with an interval of 2 years. Based on the surveys of accident risks in various work phases 34 preventive measures were developed and information about them was passed on to the herders between the questionnaires.

Specific IgE to reindeer epithelium in Finnish reindeer herders.

Reindeer herding is a major source of living for more than 4200 inhabitants in northern Finland. To determine the prevalence of allergic symptoms among reindeer herders clinical examinations and skin prick tests (SPT) with nine inhalant allergens were performed in 211 randomly selected men from 21 to 69 (mean 45) years. Specific IgE antibodies to reindeer epithelium (RE) and total serum IgE were evaluated in 99 herders, five persons who handled reindeer leather indoors, 21 atopic patients with cow allergy and another 20 subjects with specific IgE to other inhalant allergens.

Plasma levels of endothelin-1 and atrial natriuretic peptide in men during a 2-hour stay in a cold room.

Male volunteers were exposed to +10 degrees C ambient temperature for 2 hours while they were sitting undressed. The levels of endothelin-1 and atrial natriuretic peptide were determined by radioimmunoassays. Control samples were obtained at thermoneutrality.

Frostbite in reindeer herders.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of frostbite among reindeer herders and to clarify the co-factors that may relate to these injuries. 2081 (60%) male reindeer herders in Finland were asked information on frostbite. Logistic regression analysis was used for studying the effect of potential co-factors.

Respiratory symptoms and ventilatory function among Finnish reindeer herders.

Prevalence of respiratory symptoms in relation to occupation and smoking habits were evaluated in 211 randomly selected male reindeer herders in Northern Finland. Clinical examination with skin prick tests (SPT) and spirometry was conducted in 23 local health centers. No significant differences could be determined in respiratory symptoms, smoking habits or ventilatory function between full-time reindeer herders and their controls.

Cardiovascular reflexes in workers exposed to hand-arm vibration.

In the present study autonomic function was observed by measuring cardiovascular reflexes. The quiet breathing test, the deep breathing test and the Valsalva manoeuvre were used. The aim was to study the effects of long-term exposure to hand-arm vibration on the cardiovascular reflexes.

Cardiovascular reflexes and low long-term exposure to mercury vapour.

Subjective symptoms related to autonomic dysfunction and quantitative non invasive tests measuring both sympathetic and parasympathetic functions of the autonomic nervous system were studied among a group of 41 chlorine-alkali workers with low long-term exposure to mercury (Hg degree) vapour and their matched referents. The test battery included measurements of pulse rate variation in normal and deep breathing, in the Valsalva manoeuvre and in vertical tilt as well as blood pressure responses during standing and isometric work. The exposure time had been 16 years on average, and the mean exposure to Hg vapour was estimated to have been about 30 micrograms/m3 of air.

The effect of working height on the loading of the muscular and skeletal systems in the kitchens of workplace canteens.

Arising from the confirmed high incidence of illness and other signs and symptoms, estimations were made of the loading on the muscular and skeletal systems of kitchen workers. The study included a health questionnaire and the ergonomics examination of 11 kitchens. Problems in the neck-shoulders region appeared particularly frequently in short workers.

Ambient monitoring of cyclophosphamide in manufacture and hospitals.

Cyclophosphamide (CP), one of the most commonly used cytostatic drugs, is known to be a human carcinogen. In this study, CP represents a model compound for the identification of potential exposure situations in the various phases of its manufacture and hospital use. Ambient air samples were taken in the various phases and analyzed for CP.
