Microbiomes, comprised of diverse microbial species and viruses, play pivotal roles in human health, environmental processes, and biotechnological applications and interact with each other, their environment, and hosts via ecological interactions. Our understanding of microbiomes is still limited and hampered by their complexity. A concept improving this understanding is systems biology, which focuses on the holistic description of biological systems utilizing experimental and computational methods.

Prediction of anastomotic insufficiency based on the mucosal microbiome prior to colorectal surgery: a proof-of-principle study.

Anastomotic leakage (AL) is a potentially life-threatening complication following colorectal cancer (CRC) resection. In this study, we aimed to unravel longitudinal changes in microbial structure before, during, and after surgery and to determine if microbial alterations may be predictive for risk assessment between sufficient anastomotic healing (AS) and AL prior surgery. Peer2Me - evaluation of a peer supported program for adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients: study protocol of a randomised trial using a comprehensive cohort design.

Background: Developing cancer in young adulthood is a non-normative life event and associated with adverse physical, social and psychological consequences. High psychological distress is common in AYA cancer patients including anxiety, depression or fear of recurrence. At the same time, it is well known that AYA often report unmet needs for support, particularly in terms of informational exchange and emotional support from peers in order to benefit from shared experiences and enhance self-efficacy.

Ventrointermediate thalamic stimulation improves motor learning in humans.

Ventrointermediate thalamic stimulation (VIM-DBS) modulates oscillatory activity in a cortical network including primary motor cortex, premotor cortex, and parietal cortex. Here we show that, beyond the beneficial effects of VIM-DBS on motor execution, this form of invasive stimulation facilitates production of sequential finger movements that follow a repeated sequence. These results highlight the role of thalamo-cortical activity in motor learning.

Olokizumab plus methotrexate: safety and efficacy over 106 weeks of treatment.

Objective: To report long-term safety and tolerability of olokizumab (OKZ) in combination with methotrexate (MTX) in subjects with active rheumatoid arthritis (RA), using pooled data from three randomised clinical trials (RCT) followed by open-label extension (OLE) study.

Methods: Cumulative data from three phase 3 core trials and their OLE were analysed. Safety variables assessed included treatment-emergent adverse events (AEs), serious AEs (SAEs), AEs of special interest and laboratory results.

Currently, no Europe-wide guidelines or standards for performing the first neonatal examination exist. It is unclear which professional group carries out this examination in different European countries.

Functional locus coeruleus imaging to investigate an ageing noradrenergic system.

The locus coeruleus (LC), our main source of norepinephrine (NE) in the brain, declines with age and is a potential epicentre of protein pathologies in neurodegenerative diseases (ND). In vivo measurements of LC integrity and function are potentially important biomarkers for healthy ageing and early ND onset. In the present study, high-resolution functional MRI (fMRI), a reversal reinforcement learning task, and dedicated post-processing approaches were used to visualise age differences in LC function (N = 50).

Gastric cancer (GC) is still one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide, with a high mortality rate, despite improvements in diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. To diminish the GC burden, a modification of the current diagnostic paradigm, and especially endoscopic diagnosis of symptomatic individuals, is necessary. In this review article, we present a broad review and the current knowledge status on serum biomarkers, including pepsinogens, gastrin, Gastropanel, autoantibodies, and novel biomarkers, allowing us to estimate the risk of gastric precancerous conditions (GPC)-atrophic gastritis and gastric intestinal metaplasia.

Usability and accuracy of two different aortic annulus sizing software programs in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

Background: Semi-automated software is essential for planning and prosthesis selection prior transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Reliable data on the usability of software programs for planning a TAVR is missing. The aim of this study was to compare software programs 'Valve Assist 2' (GE Healthcare) and 3mensio 'Structural Heart' (Pie Medical Imaging) regarding usability and accuracy of prosthesis size selection in program-inexperienced users.

Potential risk factors for reduced quality of life and increased health care utilization in ARDS survivors: results from the multicenter cohort study DACAPO.

Aim: To analyze the association of individual pre-ICU risk factors (obesity, physical and mental comorbidity, smoking status) on the long-term recovery process in survivors of the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS; outcomes: health related quality of life, health care utilization; measured at 12, 24, and 36 months after ICU discharge).

Findings: Results show a possible causal link between pre-ICU risk factors and subsequent recovery of survivors of ARDS, especially with regard to mental health related quality of life.

Purpose: Identifying relevant pre-existing risk factors, such as mental health problems, will enable the identification of at-risk patients, thus aiding in the improvement of long-term healthcare for survivors of critical illness.

3D-visualization of segmented contacts of directional deep brain stimulation electrodes via registration and fusion of CT and FDCT.

Objectives: 3D-visualization of the segmented contacts of directional deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes is desirable since knowledge about the position of every segmented contact could shorten the timespan for electrode programming. CT cannot yield images fitting that purpose whereas highly resolved flat detector computed tomography (FDCT) can accurately image the inner structure of the electrode. This study aims to demonstrate the applicability of image fusion of highly resolved FDCT and CT to produce highly resolved images that preserve anatomical context for subsequent fusion to preoperative MRI for eventually displaying segmented contactswithin anatomical context in future studies.

Methods: Thirty healthy controls (HC) aged 64-83 years and 18 glaucoma patients (GLA) aged 62-82 years participated in this cross-sectional study.

Ethanol is metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase to acetaldehyde and induces cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), which generates reactive oxygen species that cause inflammatory liver damage. Clomethiazole, a drug approved for alcohol withdrawal treatment (AWT) in some European countries, inhibits CYP2E1. We hypothesized that clomethiazole would lead to a faster reduction in oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines, and liver enzymes compared to diazepam treatment.
