Advanced Wearable Devices for Monitoring Sweat Biochemical Markers in Athletic Performance: A Comprehensive Review.

Wearable technology has advanced significantly, offering real-time monitoring of athletes' physiological parameters and optimizing training and recovery strategies. Recent developments focus on biosensor devices capable of monitoring biochemical parameters in addition to physiological ones. These devices employ noninvasive methods such as sweat analysis, which reveals critical biomarkers like glucose, lactate, electrolytes, pH, and cortisol.

Occupational adjustments and work ability of young adult cancer survivors: results from the AYA-Leipzig study.

Purpose: Adolescent and young adult cancer survivors (AYA-CS) face a long working life after treatment, yet factors related to a successful return to work remain largely unexplored. We therefore aimed to investigate the use of occupational adjustments and their impact on work ability upon return to work.

Methods: As part of the AYA-LE study, we surveyed AYA-CS (aged 18-39 at diagnosis) who returned to work and assessed work ability (Work Ability Index) as well as use and benefit of occupational adjustments.

Background: Chronic arterial hypertension restructures the vascular architecture of the brain, leading to a series of pathological responses that culminate in cerebral small-vessel disease. Pericytes respond dynamically to vascular challenges; however, how they manifest under the continuous strain of hypertension has not been elucidated.

Methods And Results: In this study, we characterized pericyte behavior alongside hypertensive states in the spontaneously hypertensive stroke-prone rat model, focusing on their phenotypic and metabolic transformation.

TRPC1 links calcium signaling to cellular senescence in the protection against post-traumatic osteoarthritis.

Transient receptor potential channel 1 (TRPC1) is a widely expressed mechanosensitive ion channel located within the endoplasmic reticulum membrane, crucial for refilling depleted internal calcium stores during activation of calcium-dependent signaling pathways. Here, we demonstrate that TRPC1 activity is protective within cartilage homeostasis in the prevention of cellular senescence associated cartilage breakdown during mechanical and inflammatory challenge. We reveal that TRPC1 loss is associated with early stages of osteoarthritis (OA) and plays a non-redundant role in calcium signaling in chondrocytes.

Bioengineer mesenchymal stem cell for treatment of glioma by IL-12 mediated microenvironment reprogramming and nCD47-SLAMF7 mediated phagocytosis regulation of macrophages.

High expression of cellular self-activated immunosuppressive molecules and extensive infiltration of suppressive immune cells in the tumor microenvironment are the main factors contributing to glioma's resistance to immunotherapy. Nonetheless, technology to modify the expression of glioma cellular self-molecules through gene editing requires further development. This project advances cell therapy strategies to reverse the immunosuppressive microenvironment of glioma (TIME).

CAR T-cells in autoimmunity: game changer or stepping stone?

The advent of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cells has revolutionized the treatment landscape for hematologic malignancies, and emerging evidence suggests their potential in autoimmune diseases (AIDs). This article examines the early successes and future implications of B-cell-targeting CAR T-cell therapy in AIDs. Initial applications, particularly in refractory systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), have demonstrated significant and durable clinical remissions, with accompanying evaluation of the immune system suggesting a so-called "reset" of innate inflammation and adaptive autoimmunity.

Among childhood cancer survivors, the cumulative incidence rate of differentiated thyroid carcinomas (DTCs) is estimated to be 8-11%. Although the association of DTC with prior radiotherapy is well-studied, the association with chemotherapy remains less understood. Most studies focused on young adults, leaving a knowledge gap on subsequent DTC occurring in childhood and adolescence.

However, experiments with a particular inbred mouse strain performed in different laboratories often yield inconsistent or conflicting data due to housing-specific variations in the composition and diversity of SPF microbiota. Purpose: Traditional visual acuity (VA) measurements depend on subjective responses, which can be unreliable, especially with uncooperative participants. Objective measurements with visual evoked potentials (VEP) address this issue but can overestimate VA in amblyopia. This study aims to establish the P300 component of the event-related potential as an objective VA test for amblyopia and compare its performance to subjective (psychophysical) and VEP-based VA estimates.

The aim of this paper was to evaluate burnout through a sex comparison and to analyze associations of burnout with personality traits during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Nanobubble nucleation by pulsed laser illumination of colloidal gold nanoparticles.

This study expands upon a technique our team previously developed for generating nanobubbles on demand with a collimated pulsed laser beam. This work highlights how the controlled addition of gold nanoparticles enhances nanobubble generation efficiency in water, even at laser intensities well below the threshold for multiphoton ionization. Specifically, we investigated the influence of nanoparticles of three distinct sizes on the laser fluence threshold for bubble nucleation and the lifetime of the resultant nanobubbles.

FcγRIIa-mediated antibody-dependent uptake of SARS-CoV-2 enhances IL-6 expression of monocytes.

This work aimed to investigate interactions between antibody-opsonized SARS-CoV-2 and monocytes enriched from human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) to determine whether antibody dependent enhancement might contribute to the pathophysiology of COVID-19. Pre-incubation of SARS-CoV-2 with sera from hospitalized COVID-19 patients led to significantly increased virus uptake and viral replication in monocytes. Remarkably, SARS-CoV-2 pre-incubated with sera from patients with severe COVID-19 but not those with mild disease or post vaccination strongly increased IL-6 secretion by monocytes.

Use It or Lose It: Facilitating the Use of Interactive Data Apps in Psychological Research Data Sharing.

The value of open research data (ORD), a key feature of open science, lies in their reuse. However, the mere online availability of ORD does not guarantee their reuse by other researchers. Specifically, previous meta-scientific research has indicated that the underutilization of ORD is related to barriers at the level of the ORD themselves, potential reusers of ORD, and the broader academic ecosystem.

Video game-based application for fall risk assessment: a proof-of-concept cohort study.

Background: Fall(s) are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality especially amongst elderly with polyneuropathy and cognitive decline. Conventional fall risk assessment tools are prone to low predictive values and do not address specific vulnerabilities. This study seeks to advance the development of an innovative, engaging fall prediction tool for a high-risk cohort diagnosed with diabetes.

Aim: This study investigates the level of knowledge and utilization of colorectal cancer (CRC) and prostate cancer (PCa) early detection measures (EDMs) over a period of 12 years in general practice from the patient's perspective.

Background: The role of general practitioners (GPs) in EDMs for CRC and PCa in Germany is not well-documented with comprehensive data.

Methods: We conducted a patient-centric survey in the German federal state of Berlin-Brandenburg at a 12-year interval to examine the role of GPs in EDMs for CRC and PCa.

'You grow with the allergy': a grounded theory study of families' experiences with food allergy risk or diagnosis in early childhood.

Objective: Childhood food allergy is increasing in western societies. Preventing and managing food allergies is therefore essential for both parents and children. Given the limited previous research on parents' experiences of food allergy prevention in early childhood, this study aimed to develop a grounded theory to understand the experiences and interactions of families whose children are at risk of, or have been diagnosed with, food allergy.

Perioperative management of patients with mediastinal mass syndrome.

Purpose Of The Review: The mediastinal mass syndrome (MMS) can occur after induction of anesthesia, intraoperatively or even days after the surgical procedure. The focus of this review is on the management of pediatric and adult patients with a significant mediastinal mass.

Recent Findings: The age distribution of patients with mediastinal lesions suggests a bimodal shape, with an increased incidence among children under 10 years old and adults aged 60-70 years old.

Implementation of the new DGRh S2e guideline on diagnostics and treatment of adult-onset Still's disease in Germany : Implications for clinical practice in rheumatology.

Background: Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) is a rare autoinflammatory disease. Since it can lead to variable organ involvement, including life-threatening complications, and due to newly available therapeutic approaches, the German Society for Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Rheumatologie und klinische Immunologie; DGRh) issued a newly developed S2e guideline in December 2022.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the influence of the new guideline on the diagnosis, management, and outcomes of AOSD.

Micro-jet formation induced by the interaction of a spherical and toroidal cavitation bubble.

We investigate experimentally and numerically the interaction between a spherical cavitation bubble and a wall-bounded toroidal cavitation bubble. We demonstrate that shock wave focusing following toroidal bubble initiation induces the formation of micro-jets that pierce the spherical bubble in the torus-axis direction away from the surface, strongest in the anti-phase scenario. The velocity of micro-jets is determined by the initial standoff distance of the spherical bubble from the wall and thus from the toroidal bubble, with peak jet velocities approaching 1000m/s.
