Background: Fatigue is a common problem in multiple sclerosis (MS) affecting as many as 90% of patients. The Fatigue Impact Scale (FIS) is a validated measure of fatigue in MS patients. The cause of fatigue in MS is likely multifactorial, with some evidence that ongoing central nervous system (CNS) inflammation is a contributing factor.

Background: Workplace based assessment (WBA) is crucial to competency-based education. The majority of healthcare is delivered in the ambulatory setting making the ability to run an entire clinic a crucial core competency for Internal Medicine (IM) trainees. Current WBA tools used in IM do not allow a thorough assessment of this skill.

Population Health Intervention Research (PHIR) is an expanding field that explores the health effects of population-level interventions conducted within and outside of the health sector. Simulation modeling-the use of mathematical models to predict health outcomes in populations given a set of specified inputs-is a useful, yet underutilized tool for PHIR. It can be employed at several phases of the research process: (1) planning and designing PHIR studies; (2) implementation; and (3) knowledge translation of findings across settings and populations.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine if intraindividual variability would be more sensitive than speed or accuracy in detecting subtle cancer-related cognitive disturbance.

Methods: Data were from a previous study in which 60 breast cancer (BC) patients underwent neuropsychological assessment before commencement of chemotherapy and again following each chemotherapy cycle. Sixty healthy controls were tested at equivalent intervals.

Department of Radiology, Clinical Epidemiology Program, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, University of Ottawa, Room c159 Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus, 1053 Carling Ave., Ottawa, ON, K1Y 4E9, Canada.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate whether higher reported accuracy estimates are associated with shorter time to publication among imaging diagnostic accuracy studies.

Methods: We included primary imaging diagnostic accuracy studies, included in meta-analyses from systematic reviews published in 2015. For each primary study, we extracted accuracy estimates, participant recruitment periods and publication dates.

Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Surgery, University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine, Loeb Research Building, 725, Parkdale Avenue, K1Y 4E9 Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Electronic address:

We report a case of synovial chondromatosis of the wrist that manifested as acute carpal tunnel syndrome. The patient successfully underwent carpal tunnel release, tenosynovectomy and resection of dorsal and volar ossified bodies embedded in the tenosynovium overlying the wrist. Final histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of synovial chondromatosis.

Background: The Serious Outcomes Surveillance (SOS) Network was established to monitor seasonal influenza complications among hospitalized Canadian adults and to assess the effectiveness of influenza vaccination against severe outcomes. Here we report age- and strain-specific vaccine effectiveness (VE) in preventing severe outcomes during a season characterized by mixed outbreaks of four different influenza strains.

Methods: This prospective, multicentre, test-negative case-control study evaluated the VE of trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV) in the prevention of laboratory-confirmed influenza-hospitalization in adults aged ≥16 years (all adults) and adults aged 16-64 years (younger adults).

Diagnostic Accuracy of Centrally Restricted Diffusion in the Differentiation of Treatment-Related Necrosis from Tumor Recurrence in High-Grade Gliomas.

AJNR Am J Neuroradiol

February 2018

From the Department of Radiology (N.Z., C.T., S.C., T.B.N.), Division of Neuroradiology, University of Ottawa, The Ottawa Hospital Civic and General Campus, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Background And Purpose: Centrally restricted diffusion has been demonstrated in recurrent high-grade gliomas treated with bevacizumab. Our purpose was to assess the accuracy of centrally restricted diffusion in the diagnosis of radiation necrosis in high-grade gliomas not treated with bevacizumab.

Materials And Methods: In this prospective study, we enrolled patients with high-grade gliomas who developed a new ring-enhancing necrotic lesion and who underwent re-resection.

Background: Consideration of cost determinants is crucial to inform delivery of public vaccination programs.

Objectives: To estimate the average total cost of laboratory-confirmed influenza requiring hospitalization in Canadians prior to, during, and 30 days following discharge. To analyze effects of patient/disease characteristics, treatment, and regional differences in costs.

Mobile tablet-based therapies following stroke: a systematic scoping review protocol of attempted interventions and the challenges encountered.

Syst Rev

November 2017

Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and Scientific Director at the Ottawa Methods Centre, University of Ottawa, Alta Vista Campus, 501 Smyth Rd, Ottawa, ON, K1H 8L6, Canada.

Background: Stroke is a growing global epidemic limiting the ability of millions to function independently due to post-stroke deficits and complications. Although specialized stroke rehabilitation improves the recovery of functional abilities, accessing rehabilitation services has become increasingly challenging as the number of stroke survivors continues to increase and rehabilitation resources remain scarce. Mobile tablet-based therapies (MTBTs) may be a resource-efficient platform for providing stroke rehabilitation services.

Syst Rev

October 2017

University of Ottawa Department of Radiology, Clinical Epidemiology Program, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, Room c159 Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus, 1053 Carling Ave, Ottawa, ON, K1Y 4E9, Canada.

Background: This study is to perform a systematic review of existing guidance on quality of reporting and methodology for systematic reviews of diagnostic test accuracy (DTA) in order to compile a list of potential items that might be included in a reporting guideline for such reviews: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses of Diagnostic Test Accuracy (PRISMA-DTA).

Methods: Study protocol published on EQUATOR website. Articles in full text or abstract form that reported on any aspect of reporting systematic reviews of diagnostic test accuracy were eligible for inclusion.

Purpose: Current techniques used to measure joint contact rely on invasive procedures and are limited to statically loaded positions. We sought to examine native distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) contact mechanics using nondestructive imaging methods during simulated active and passive forearm rotation.

Methods: Testing was performed using 8 fresh-frozen cadaveric specimens that were surgically prepared by isolating muscles involved in forearm rotation.

Background: Hemorrhage is a major cause of early mortality following a traumatic injury. The progression and consequences of significant blood loss occur quickly as death from hemorrhagic shock or exsanguination often occurs within the first few hours. The mainstay of treatment therefore involves early identification of patients at risk for hemorrhagic shock in order to provide blood products and control of the bleeding source if necessary.

April 2017

1 Department of Radiology, Clinical Epidemiology Program, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, University of Ottawa, Rm c159 Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus, 1053 Carling Ave, Ottawa, ON, K1Y 4E9, Canada.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to develop a tool to assess the procedural competence of radiology trainees, with sources of evidence gathered from five categories to support the construct validity of tool: content, response process, internal structure, relations to other variables, and consequences.

Subjects And Methods: A pilot form for assessing procedural competence among radiology residents, known as the RAD-Score tool, was developed by evaluating published literature and using a modified Delphi procedure involving a group of local content experts. The pilot version of the tool was tested by seven radiology department faculty members who evaluated procedures performed by 25 residents at one institution between October 2014 and June 2015.
