Rationale: The chronic lung disease bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) remains the most common complication of extreme prematurity (<28 weeks of gestation). Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (UC-MSCs) represent an opportunity for autologous cell-therapy, as UC-MSCs have been shown to improve lung function and structure in experimental BPD. However, characterization and repair capacity of UC-MSCs derived from donors with pregnancy-related complications associated with prematurity remain unexplored.

Background: The Quality in Acute Stroke Care (QASC) Trial demonstrated that assistance to implement protocols to manage Fever, hyperglycaemia (Sugar) and Swallowing (FeSS) post-stroke reduced death and disability. In 2017, a 'Strong Recommendation' for use of FeSS Protocols was included in the Australian Clinical Guidelines for Stroke Management. We aimed to: i) compare adherence to FeSS Protocols pre- and post-guideline inclusion; ii) determine if adherence varied with prior participation in a treatment arm of a FeSS Intervention study, or receiving treatment in a stroke unit; and compare findings with our previous studies.

Epidemiology of Huntington's Disease in Latin America: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Mov Disord

November 2024

Servicio de Movimientos Anormales, Departamento de Neurología, FLENI, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Article Synopsis
  • A study conducted on Huntington's disease (HD) in Latin America found that previous global reviews have overlooked significant regional data, prompting a search across Spanish, Portuguese, and English databases to gather relevant studies.
  • The research identified 24 studies from 12 of the 36 Latin American countries, revealing a pooled prevalence of HD at 0.64 per 100,000 people, with higher rates specifically in Mexico, Peru, and Brazil.
  • The authors suggest that the actual prevalence of HD may be underestimated due to limited research, underdiagnosis, and insufficient access to molecular testing and specialists in the region, emphasizing the need for further studies to enhance understanding and access to care.

Introduction: Observational studies are fraught with several biases including reverse causation and residual confounding. Overview of reviews of observational studies (ie, umbrella reviews) synthesise systematic reviews with or without meta-analyses of cross-sectional, case-control and cohort studies, and may also aid in the grading of the credibility of reported associations. The number of published umbrella reviews has been increasing.

Introduction: International guidelines recommend that adults with peripheral artery disease (PAD) be prescribed antiplatelet, statin and antihypertensive medications. However, it is unclear how often people with PAD are underprescribed these drugs, which characteristics predict clinician underprescription of and patient non-adherence to guideline-recommended cardiovascular medications, and whether underprescription and non-adherence are associated with adverse health and health system outcomes.

Methods And Analysis: We will search MEDLINE, EMBASE and Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews from 2006 onwards.

Article Synopsis
  • The QASC Australia trial showed that nurse-led protocols for managing fever, sugar levels, and swallowing (FeSS Protocols) can reduce deaths and disabilities after a stroke, prompting a larger study in Europe involving 64 hospitals across 17 countries to evaluate the scalability of these protocols.
  • The implementation process was supported by a multi-stakeholder framework that included academic partners and the Angels Initiative, a non-profit organization focused on promoting evidence-based stroke care.
  • A qualitative evaluation was conducted through interviews with various stakeholders to identify factors affecting the engagement and implementation of the FeSS Protocols, revealing three main themes regarding the challenges and facilitators of this process.

Introduction: Older adults are at high risk of developing delirium in the emergency department (ED). Delirium associated with an ED visit is independently linked to poorer outcomes such as increased length of hospital stay and mortality. Performance measures (PMs) are needed to identify variations in the quality of delirium care to help focus improvement efforts where they are most needed.

To determine whether there was an association between self-reported preoperative exercise and postoperative outcomes after lumbar fusion spinal surgery. We performed a retrospective multivariable analysis of the prospective Canadian Spine Outcomes and Research Network (CSORN) database of 2,203 patients who had elective single-level lumbar fusion spinal surgeries. We compared adverse events and hospital length of stay between patients who reported regular exercise (twice or more per week) prior to surgery ("Regular Exercise") to those exercising infrequently (once or less per week) ("Infrequent Exercise") or those who did no exercise ("No Exercise").

The genus has undergone many updates since it was first described; however, there are some missing pieces in the phylogenetic relationships among species. The present review aimed to: (i) understand the evolutionary meaning of their different spore wall ornamentations; (ii) define the best molecular marker for phylogenetic inferences, (iii) address some specific issues concerning the polyphyletic nature of and , and the inclusion of species; and (iv) update the global geographical distribution of species. As such, the wall ornamentation of previously described species was reviewed and phylogenetic analyses were carried out based on ITS and SSU-ITS-LSU (nrDNA).
