Objectives: The Intranasal Schirmer test (INS) is an easy to administer test that can yield objective measurement of the quantity of nasal secretion and has been studied in patients with various nasal and systemic pathologies; however, the role of INS in patients with allergic rhinitis remains unclear. Our aim was to determine the relationship between various allergic symptoms and the Intranasal Schirmer Test (INS) score and to evaluate the utility of INS in determining treatment effect in patients with allergic rhinitis.

Methods: This prospective study included patients with allergic rhinitis who were randomly divided into 3 treatment groups (nasal steroid only, oral antihistamine only, nasal steroid and oral antihistamine).

The most serious form of nasal dorsum pathologies is saddle nose deformity. Vary of nasal dorsal augmentation grafts were reported in the literature but inferior bone graft (ITBG) alone has not attracted attention. The ITBG has advantages such as easy and fast harvesting, easy to shape due to cancellous bone tissue.

Objectives: The study aims to investigate the possible side effects of isotretinoin use on the nasal mucosa with objective methods in the treatment of acne vulgaris.

Methods: Before the treatment, nasal mucociliary clearance time (MCT) was measured in all patients. Also all patients were asked to complete the questionnaires about the nasal dryness (visual analog scale [VAS]), nasal obstruction (Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation [NOSE]), and presence of epistaxis (Epistaxis Severity Score [ESS]).

Swallowing and swallowing-related quality of life studies following stroke were almost always performed by including both patients with brainstem and cortical involvement. It was aimed in this study to show the presence of dysphagia in patients with only cortical ischemic stroke and to investigate the interaction between dysphagia and quality of life as well as to evaluate the effect of a rehabilitation program in the acute phase. Seventy-two patients with cortical stroke (between 0 and 30 days) and dysphagia were included.

The objective of the study was to determine the inter-rater variability in assessment of laryngeal findings and whether diagnosing laryngopharyngeal reflux based on the laryngeal findings and history alone without considering allergic rhinitis leads to the overdiagnosis and overtreatment of laryngopharyngeal reflux. Patients with positive and negative skin prick tests were recruited from an allergy clinic in a tertiary teaching university hospital. All subjects completed the Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) and underwent laryngeal examinations by three physicians blinded to the skin prick test results and the Reflux Finding Score (RFS) was determined.

Searching for the cheese: does ethmoid pneumatization affect the location of the anterior ethmoid artery?

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

February 2014

Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Clinic, Atatürk Research and Education Hospital, İzmir Katip Çelebi University, Karabağlar, İzmir, Turkey,

Endoscopic sinus surgery is a widely used technique in otolaryngologic practice. To avoid complications, the locations of important anatomical structures, such as the anterior ethmoid artery (AEA), should be determined preoperatively. We want to evaluate the effect of ethmoid cavity pneumatization on the location of the AEA and to determine consistent landmark(s) for locating the AEA.
