Department of Agricultural and Environmental Science, Otis L. Floyd Nursery Research Center, Tennessee State University, McMinnville, TN, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Red maples are popular shade trees in the U.S., admired for their beautiful fall colors and rapid growth, but they are severely impacted by flatheaded borers, especially in stressed or newly planted trees.
  • A study compared three borer-susceptible red maple cultivars with a potentially resistant Freeman maple hybrid 'Autumn Blaze,' focusing on their traits under normal and herbicide-stressed conditions.
  • The hybrid showed faster growth and different mineral concentrations, indicating potential borer resistance, but further research is needed to fully understand these traits and their relationship to borer susceptibility.

Evaluation of Chemical and Biological Products for Control of Crown Gall on Rose.

Pathogens

August 2024

Department of Agricultural Sciences and Engineering, College of Agriculture, Otis L. Floyd Nursery Research Center, Tennessee State University, McMinnville, TN 37110, USA.

Crown gall is a soil-borne bacterial disease caused by , leading to significant economic losses in many plant species. For the assessment of the biological and chemical products on crown gall, each plant's crown region and roots were wounded, and then were dipped into their respective treatments. After the treatments, the plants were inoculated with a suspension of pathogenic isolate FBG1034 and maintained in a greenhouse for six months to assess them for gall formation.

Herbicide Stress Inducesbeetle Oviposition on Red Maples.

J Chem Ecol

October 2024

College of Agriculture, Otis L. Floyd Nursery Research Center, Tennessee State University, McMinnville, TN, 37110, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Flatheaded borers (FHB; Chrysobothris spp.) are beetles that lay eggs in stressed deciduous trees, which may have chemical and nutrient changes that attract the beetles.
  • The study examined how different stress treatments (chemical, physical leaf removal, and physical bark removal) affected the attractiveness of maple trees to FHB by analyzing changes in nitrogen, polyphenols, and VOC emissions.
  • Results showed that herbicide-stressed trees had more FHB larvae and oviposition attempts, possibly because they had higher nitrogen levels and polyphenol concentrations, which may signal suitable conditions for the beetles.

Type and duration of water stress influence host selection and colonization by exotic ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

Front Insect Sci

July 2023

Application Technology Research Unit, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)-Agricultural Research Service, Wooster, OH, United States.

Fungus-farming ambrosia beetles in the tribe Xyleborini tunnel into plants and trees to establish chambers for cultivating their nutritional fungal mutualists and rearing offspring. Some xyleborine ambrosia beetles preferentially infest and perform better in living but weakened trees. Flood stress predisposes horticultural tree crops to infestation, but the impact of drought stress has not been well studied.
