This study describes and provides qualitative analysis of an innovative, inter-professional (IP) geriatrics curriculum focused on team-based care with healthy older adults in a home-based community setting. The curriculum consisted of five, four-hour didactic and experiential sessions over one academic year. Dental, medical, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, and physician assistant students were placed into teams led by IP faculty from each health professional school.

Phages are bacterial viruses that may persist as intracellular parasitic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or use bacterial metabolism to replicate and cause bacterial lysis. The microbiomes of saliva, oral mucosa, and dental plaque contain active phage virions, bacterial lysogens (ie, carrying dormant prophages), and bacterial strains containing short fragments of phage DNA.

Efficacy of topical interventions for temporomandibular disorders compared to placebo or control therapy: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

This systematic review focused on the efficacy of topical products in reducing temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD)-associated pain, in comparison to placebo or control interventions. The EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and MEDLINE via PubMed databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using topical interventions in adults diagnosed with TMD. The pain intensity was the primary outcome, and other clinical findings were the secondary outcomes.

Objective: To describe CHAMP (Children's Oral Health Promotion Program) evaluating the impact of two motivational methods in increasing dental care access.

Methods: CHAMP is a multi-dimensional oral health promotion programme that recruited and screened underprivileged children/families from community sites in Los Angeles County between 2012 and 2018. A randomized clinical trial (RCT) enrolled children/families into one or more motivational interventions (intra-oral camera and/or social work consultation) designed to impact subsequent scheduling of dental appointments.

Purpose: Standing electric scooters are a relatively new mode of transportation that are becoming increasingly popular in large metropolitan areas. The purpose of this study was to characterize injury patterns and identify risk factors for craniomaxillofacial injuries in standing electric scooter accidents.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study used a Clinical Data Warehouse search engine to identify patients who sustained standing electric scooter accidents from 2017 to 2019 using the International Classification of Diseases 10 revision codes.

Role of stem cell therapies in treating chronic wounds: A systematic review.

Background: The impairment of cutaneous wound healing results in chronic, non-healing wounds that are caused by altered wound environment oxygenation, tissue injury, and permissive microbial growth. Current modalities for the treatment of these wounds inadequately address the complex changes involved in chronic wound pathogenesis. Consequently, stem cell therapies have emerged as a potential therapeutic modality to promote cutaneous regeneration through trophic and paracrine activity.

Antibacterial and immunoregulatory activity of a novel hepcidin homologue in diploid hybrid fish (Carassius auratus cuvieri ♀ × Carassius auratus red var ♂).

Hepcidin, a multifunctional hormone oligopeptide, not only exhibits a regulatory role in iron metabolism, but also participates in the regulation of teleostean immunity. In this study, ORF sequence of WR-hepcidin was 258 bp and encoded 85 amino acid residues. Tissue-specific analysis revealed that the highest expression of WR-hepcidin was observed in liver.

A bibliometric analysis of Periodontology 2000.

The continually high impact factor of Periodontology 2000 (7.861 for 2018), the level of which is unprecedented among dental journals, prompted the present bibliometric analysis of the Journal. Since the inception of Periodontology 2000 in 1993 and until July 2019, the top 100 most-cited articles have received a total of 21,276 (Web of Science), 23,009 (Elsevier's Scopus), and 43,518 (Google Scholar) citations.

A Pre-clinical Animal Model of Secondary Head and Neck Lymphedema.

Head and neck lymphedema (HNL) is a disfiguring disease affecting over 90% of patients treated for head and neck cancer. Animal models of lymphedema are used to test pharmacologic and microsurgical therapies; however, no animal model for HNL is described in the literature to date. In this study we describe the first reproducible rat model for HNL.
