Introduction: As of 2020, about 21% of adults in the United States have a diagnosable mental health disorder, excluding substance use and developmental disorders. Depression, predicted by the WHO to be the leading cause of disease burden by 2030, is linked to various systemic conditions and has been associated with poor oral health. Both behavioral factors, like poor dental hygiene and irregular visits, and biological mechanisms, such as changes in salivary immunity, contribute to this connection, which impacts overall well-being and quality of life.

Peri-implantitis is a complex infectious disease that manifests as progressive loss of alveolar bone around the dental implants and hyper-inflammation associated with microbial dysbiosis. Using antibiotics in treating peri-implantitis is controversial because of antibiotic resistance threats, the non-selective suppression of pathogens and commensals within the microbial community, and potentially serious systemic sequelae. Therefore, conventional treatment for peri-implantitis comprises mechanical debridement by nonsurgical or surgical approaches with adjunct local microbicidal agents.

Unlabelled: Severe bone loss in the anterior maxilla poses challenges to implant placement, especially when treating the entire arch. Utilization of zygomatic implants may not allow positioning of the implant platform anterior enough to properly support the full arch prosthesis, leaving an anterior cantilever in some clinical cases.
Importance: Placement of implants into the trans-nasal bone between the pneumatized maxillary sinus and nasal fossa allows utilization of an extralong implant in this residual bone to augment zygomatic implants placed distal to this for better support of a full arch prosthesis.

Background: The precise formation of mineralized dental tissues such as enamel and/or dentin require tight transcriptional control of the secretion of matrix proteins. Here, we have investigated the transcriptional regulation of the second most prominent enamel matrix protein, enamelin, and its regulation through the major odontogenic transcription factor, MSX2.
Results: Using in vitro and in vivo approaches, we identified that (a) Enam expression is reduced in the Msx2 mouse mutant pre-secretory and secretory ameloblasts, (b) Enam is an early response gene whose expression is under the control of Msx2, (c) Msx2 binds to Enam promoter in vitro, suggesting that enam is a direct target for Msx2 and that (d) Msx2 alone represses Enam gene expression.

Overcoming the short lifespan of current dental adhesives remains a significant clinical need. Adhesives rely on formation of the hybrid layer to adhere to dentin and penetrate within collagen fibrils. However, the ability of adhesives to achieve complete enclosure of demineralized collagen fibrils is recognized as currently unattainable.

Low maxillary bone density associated with physiological bone remodeling and resorption accelerated by the presence or history of periodontal disease can prevent implant placement without either ridge and/or sinus augmentation in atrophic maxillary edentulous cases. As an alternative to avoid bone grafting and provide immediacy in restorative treatment care for the patient, remote anchorages to the basal bones of the maxilla of the patient are being used with zygomatic or pterygoid implants. The trans-sinus implant, when indicated can offer a reliable alternative to the zygomatic dental implant in that treatment of the severely edentulous maxilla.

Deep margin elevation is a solution to the problem of localized subgingival margins when preparing a tooth for direct, semidirect, or indirect restorations. The technique focuses on the local isolation of the deep margin by using a modified circumferential matrix. An evolution of the technique is presented, the matrix-in-a-matrix technique, to facilitate the isolation and fit of the subgingival matrix by adding a sectional band inside the circumferential matrix and packing Teflon tape between the 2 bands.

The use of continuous insulin pump systems for effective management of glycemic control in the patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is steadily increasing. Although the types of devices and their respective manufacturers vary, insulin pumps all utilize similar underlying concepts based on the delivery of exogenous insulin to patients with T1DM in manners that more closely approximate the normal biologic function and performance of the pancreas. As insulin pumps becomes more commonplace and their use more widespread, the sedation or anesthesia provider must ensure familiarity with the basic knowledge of pump function and the various perioperative management considerations.

Amelogenin is the most abundant matrix protein guiding hydroxyapatite formation in enamel, the durable bioceramic tissue that covers vertebrate teeth. Here, we sought to refine structure-function for an amelogenin domain based on data showing a 42 amino acid amelogenin-derived peptide (ADP7) mimicked formation of hydroxyapatite similar to that observed for the full-length mouse 180 amino acid protein. In mice, we used CRISPR-Cas9 to express only ADP7 by the native amelogenin promoter.
