Introduction: Despite antifungal advancements, candidaemia still has a high mortality rate of up to 40%. The ECMM Candida III study in Europe investigated the changing epidemiology and outcomes of candidaemia for better understanding and management of these infections.

Methods: In this observational cohort study, participating hospitals enrolled the first ten consecutive adults with blood culture-proven candidemia.

Background: There is a need to identify the complex interplay between various physiological mechanisms in primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) and cystic fibrosis (CF). The study investigated the interaction between respiratory function, exercise capacity, muscle strength, and inflammatory and oxidant/antioxidant responses in patients with PCD and CF.

Methods: The study included 30 PCD patients, 30 CF patients, and 29 age and sex-matched healthy subjects.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of deep convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithms for the detecting and segmentation of overhanging dental restorations in bitewing radiographs.

Methods: A total of 1160 anonymized bitewing radiographs were used to progress the artificial intelligence (AI) system for the detection and segmentation of overhanging restorations. The data were then divided into three groups: 80% for training (930 images, 2399 labels), 10% for validation (115 images, 273 labels), and 10% for testing (115 images, 306 labels).

Background: Although there have been significant improvements in the treatment of heart failure (HF) in recent decades, its prognosis remains poor. Although there are many biomarkers that can help predict the prognosis of patients with HF, there is a need for simpler, cheaper, and more easily available biomarkers.

Objective: To evaluate the predictive value of pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV) in patients with acute decompensated HF.

Article Synopsis
  • Traumatic peripheral nerve injuries occur in about 13-23 people per 100,000 annually and can lead to major functional impairments, making effective treatments critical.
  • This study investigates the potential benefits of combining adipose-derived stem cells with nerve transfer procedures for improved repair outcomes in a rat model of brachial plexus injury.
  • The results showed that the group receiving both nerve transfer and stem cells demonstrated more favorable outcomes compared to the nerve transfer group alone, indicating a promising avenue for future treatments.

Background: During laparoscopic surgery, pneumoperitoneum and Trendelenburg positioning applied to provide better surgical vision can cause many physiological changes as well as an increase in intracranial pressure. However, it has been reported that cerebral autoregulation prevents cerebral edema by regulating this pressure increase. This study aimed to investigate whether the duration of the Trendelenburg position had an effect on the increase in intracranial pressure using ultrasonographic optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) measurements.

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare and persistent neutrophilic dermatosis with an unknown cause. The condition typically manifests clinically as a pustule or plaque that quickly evolves into a necrotic ulcer with undermined violet-colored margins. A surgical debridement might worsen the disease due to the pathergy phenomenon.

In this study, we investigated the effect of heat treatment (HT) and hot isostatic press (HIP) on the corrosion behavior of TiAl V, manufactured by electron beam melting (EBM) additive manufacturing. The preliminary results showed that the thermal process makes the columnar structure more pronounced and the α-lathe coarser compared to EBM. The β phase disappeared with the aging treatment and when increasing the HIP temperature treatment.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate seizure semiology, electroencephalogram (EEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and genetic findings, as well as treatment choices in Rett syndrome (RTT).

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on one hundred and twenty cases diagnosed with RTT with a genetic mutation. Data were obtained from nine participating centers.

Background: Although plateletpheresis donation is commonly accepted as a safe procedure, its influence on platelet function, coagulation system and fibrinolysis is not completely elucidated.

Objectives: In this study, we tried to assess the effects of plateletpheresis on donor's hemostasis system by measuring platelet activation, development of platelet-leukocyte aggregates, and coagulation activation.

Study Design: Prospective observational study.

Objectives: In the interpretation of panoramic radiographs (PRs), the identification and numbering of teeth is an important part of the correct diagnosis. This study evaluates the effectiveness of YOLO-v5 in the automatic detection, segmentation, and numbering of deciduous and permanent teeth in mixed dentition pediatric patients based on PRs.

Methods: A total of 3854 mixed pediatric patients PRs were labelled for deciduous and permanent teeth using the CranioCatch labeling program.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes data from the CF Registry of Turkey to measure the rate of decline in pulmonary function (ppFEV1) among cystic fibrosis patients and identifies risk factors related to this decline.
  • It found that patients with more severe disease (ppFEV1 < 40) had poorer nutritional status and a higher prevalence of chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection compared to those with better lung function.
  • The results emphasize the need for regular monitoring of patients with normal initial ppFEV1 and early treatment for P. aeruginosa infections, highlighting the crucial role of proper nutrition in managing cystic fibrosis.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores the relationship between microRNAs, particularly miR-127-5p, and cancer stem cells in breast cancer, focusing on boric acid's potential anti-cancer properties.
  • - Boric acid was found to reduce the viability of breast cancer stem cells (BC-SCs) in a dose- and time-dependent manner, with specific IC50 values established for both MCF-7 cells and BC-SCs.
  • - Results indicated that while boric acid increases miR-127-5p expression and downregulates certain metastatic genes, it does not enhance the metastasis properties of breast cancer stem cells.

Immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are considered as the novel treatment modality in certain cancers. They may soon be used widely even as the first-line option for cancer treatment due to their remarkable efficacies and impacts on survival rates, particularly in cases of advanced metastatic cancer. Of note, these agents might unveil new autoimmune diseases as well as causing flare-ups of a pre-existing autoimmune disease.

Eskisehir Osmangazi University Lung and Pleural Cancers Clinical and Research Center, Turkey; Eskisehir Osmangazi University Faculty of Medicine Department of Public Health, Turkey.

Apart from living near an asbestos industry site, mine, or in an asbestos-contaminated house, environmental asbestos exposure is observed in certain regions where the (natural) soil is 'contaminated' with asbestos (fibers). In this essay, we review the association between environmental asbestos exposure and lung cancer in Turkey. Other studies have also suggested that environmental asbestos exposure is able to increase the risk of lung cancer.
