Eppikajutsuto (EPTJ) is used to reduce redundant body fluids and suppress inflammation. We observed that EPTJ shortened the duration of treatment in an elderly patient with burn injuries. A 96-year-old man suffered superficial partial-thickness burns on the dorsum of his right hand and left knee.

Effects of enteral nutrition and parenteral nutrition on survival in patients with advanced cancer cachexia: Analysis of a multicenter prospective cohort study.

Background & Aims: The benefits of artificial nutrition and hydration in patients with advanced cancer remain unknown. Therefore, we conducted a prospective study to evaluate effects of enteral nutrition (EN) and parenteral nutrition and hydration (PNH) on survival in palliative care units.

Methods: This study involved a secondary analysis of a multicenter cohort study.

Gallstones were associated with the gastrointestinal adverse events of cinacalcet in hemodialysis patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism.

This study aimed to investigate the association of gastrointestinal (GI) adverse events of cinacalcet with gallstones in the hemodialysis (HD) patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). A total of 23 HD patients under the treatment with cinacalcet and 101 control patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. We investigated the prevalence of gallstones and the association of GI adverse events of cinacalcet with gallstones.

Locomotive syndrome is associated with large blood pressure variability in elderly hypertensives: the Japan Ambulatory Blood Pressure Prospective (JAMP) substudy.

Chronic pain, represented by locomotive syndrome (LS), and psychosocial factors are possible factors of blood pressure (BP) variability (BPV). The authors tested the hypothesis that there are links among LS, depression, and BPV. In 85 Japanese elderly hypertensive patients with normal daily activities, the authors performed ambulatory BP monitoring, determined the LS scale (LSS), and administered the Self-Rating Questionnaire for Depression (SRQD).

Exaggerated blood pressure variability in patients with pneumoconiosis: a pilot study.

Background: Chronic hypoxia is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but its association with blood pressure (BP) remains unclear. We performed this study to clarify the hypothesis that chronic hypoxia is associated with abnormal BP variability in patients with pneumoconiosis.

Methods: We recruited 19 patients with pneumoconiosis and 30 age- and BP level-matched control subjects.

Incidence of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH): a 10-year follow-up study of a rural community in Japan.

Background: The epidemiology and pathophysiology of iNPH remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the incidence of iNPH in elderly inhabitants of the community, and to identify how ventriculomegaly develops on brain MRIs and how symptoms develop in iNPH patients.

Methods: In 2000, 350 inhabitants, all 70-year-olds living in the community of Takahata in Japan, were asked to participate in a survey that included a questionnaire, physical examinations, cognitive screenings, and brain MRI studies.
