Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on understanding factors that influence the 12-month mJOA scores, which gauge the severity of cervical myelopathy, and aims to develop a prediction model based on these factors.
  • Key findings revealed that initial mJOA scores, particularly symptoms like leg numbness and walking ability, were significant predictors of outcomes, alongside demographic and clinical variables such as age and mental health.
  • The authors list appears to have two entries for Jacquelyn S. Pennings and claims Kristin R. Archer as the last author, suggesting a need for accuracy in author representation.

Mindfulness meditation may improve well-being at work; however, effects on food cravings and metabolic health are not well known. We tested effects of digital meditation, alone or in combination with a healthy eating program, on perceived stress, cravings, and adiposity. We randomized 161 participants with overweight and moderate stress to digital meditation ('MED,' n = 38), digital meditation + healthy eating ('MED+HE,' n = 40), active control ('HE,' n = 41), or waitlist control ('WL,' n = 42) for 8 weeks.

Despite the growing research base examining the benefits and physiological mechanisms of slow-paced breathing (SPB), mindfulness (M), and their combination (as yogic breathing, SPB + M), no studies have directly compared these in a "dismantling" framework. To address this gap, we conducted a fully remote three-armed feasibility study with wearable devices and video-based laboratory visits. Eighteen healthy participants (age 18-30 years, 12 female) were randomized to one of three 8-week interventions: slow-paced breathing (SPB, = 5), mindfulness (M, = 6), or yogic breathing (SPB + M, = 7).

Study Objectives: Heart rate variability (HRV) measures provide valuable insights into physiology; however, gaps remain in understanding circadian patterns in heart rate dynamics. We aimed to explore day-night differences in heart rate dynamics in patients with chronic cardiopulmonary disease compared with healthy controls.

Methods: Using 24-hour heart rate data from patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and/or heart failure (n = 16) and healthy adult controls (older group: ≥50 years, n = 42; younger group: 20-49 years, n = 136), we compared day-night differences in conventional time and frequency domain HRV indices and a multiscale-entropy-based complexity index (CI) of HRV among the 3 groups.

Introduction: Women with genitourinary pain, a hallmark symptom of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), are at a two- to four-fold risk for depression as compared to women without genitourinary pain. Despite the pervasive impact of IC/BPS on psychological health, there is a paucity of empirical research on understanding the relation between IC/BPS and psychological distress. It has been previously reported that women with overactive bladder use increased compensatory coping and these behaviors are associated with heightened anxiety and stress.

Taste-Associative Learning in Rats: Conditioned Immunosuppression with Cyclosporine A to Study the Neuro-Immune Network.

Curr Protoc

Institute of Medical Psychology and Behavioral Immunobiology, Center for Translational Neuro- and Behavioral Sciences (C-TNBS), University Hospital Essen, University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen, Germany.

The pharmacological effects of an immunosuppressive drug, such as cyclosporine A (CsA), can be learned and retrieved by humans and animals when applying associative learning paradigms. This principle is based on Pavlovian conditioning, in which repeated presentation of an "unconditioned stimulus" (US; here, the drug CsA) is paired with exposure to a "conditioned stimulus" (CS; here, the novel taste of saccharin). Re-exposure to the CS at a later time leads to an avoidance behavior.

Taste-immune associative learning amplifies immunopharmacological effects and attenuates disease progression in a rat glioblastoma model.

Brain Behav Immun

November 2022

Institute of Medical Psychology and Behavioral Immunobiology, Center for Translational Neuro- Behavioral Sciences (C-TNBS), University Hospital Essen, University Duisburg-Essen, Germany. Electronic address:

Mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR)-signaling is one key driver of glioblastoma (GBM), facilitating tumor growth by promoting the shift to an anti-inflammatory, pro-cancerogenic microenvironment. Even though mTOR inhibitors such as rapamycin (RAPA) have been shown to interfere with GBM disease progression, frequently chaperoned toxic drug side effects urge the need for developing alternative or supportive treatment strategies. Importantly, previous work document that taste-immune associative learning with RAPA may be utilized to induce learned pharmacological placebo responses in the immune system.
