In order to promote insight into providing secure teaching and learning environments within schools, this study sought to: (a) explore instructional practices utilized by educators to promote occupational safety and health (OSH) and hearing protection within career and technical education programs; and (b) identify what barriers may exist which prevent instructors from teaching OSH and hearing protection. Utilizing a focus group methodology, this research examined automotive and diesel technology instructors within an eastern US state. Upon analysis, safety appears to be a priority for participants in this study.

A density functional theory study of the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of pyruvic acid to ł- and d-lactic acids catalysed by a chiral osmium complex OsH[(R,R)TsNCH(Ph)CH(Ph)NH](η-p-cymene) reveals a formic acid assisted enantio-determining proton-coupled hydride transfer mechanism. Activation strain model analysis indicates that the C-H/π interaction between η-arene and carboxyl ligands has a significant influence on the enantioselectivity. The replacement of p-cymene by 4-isopropyl biphenyl or phenyl is highly likely to improve the catalytic performance of the complex.

Sterols are important components of biological membranes that determine the physicochemical properties of lipid bilayer and regulate the functioning of membrane proteins. Being insoluble in water, sterols cannot diffuse between the membrane compartments separated by an aqueous phase. For this reason, distribution of sterols across cellular membranes is rather uneven.

Background: There is a lack of trained Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) professionals able to meet the current and future demand for such expertize in the United States. Many OSH professionals are required to perform duties, which are outside of their primary area of expertize; thus, expansion of continuing education (CE) may be necessary to properly train individuals for new OSH responsibilities.
Methods: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health-funded Education and Research Centers collectively developed and distributed an internet-based survey to gauge the CE needs and interests of the OSH workforce.

Human biomonitoring (HBM) is an important tool to survey the internal exposure of humans which represents the real life chemical body burden to chemicals and/or their metabolites. It results from total exposure to chemical substances from different sources and via different routes. These substances may be regulated under different legislative frameworks on chemicals (e.

Cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) is the primary sensor for aberrant intracellular dsDNA producing the cyclic dinucleotide cGAMP, a second messenger initiating cytokine production in subsets of myeloid lineage cell types. Therefore, inhibition of the enzyme cGAS may act anti-inflammatory. Here we report the discovery of human-cGAS-specific small-molecule inhibitors by high-throughput screening and the targeted medicinal chemistry optimization for two molecular scaffolds.

Tissue protection from oxidative stress by antioxidants is of vital importance for cellular metabolism. The lens mostly consists of fiber cells lacking nuclei and organelles, having minimal metabolic activity; therefore, the defense of the lens tissue from the oxidative stress strongly relies on metabolites. Protein-free extracts from lenses and gills of freshwater fish, and , were subjected to analysis using high-field H NMR spectroscopy and HPLC with optical and high-resolution mass spectrometric detection.

Organizational features of work often pose obstacles to workforce health, and a participatory change process may address those obstacles. In this research, an intervention program sought to integrate occupational safety and health (OSH) with health promotion (HP) in three skilled nursing facilities. Three facilities with pre-existing HP programs served as control sites.

Background: State and Territorial Health Departments (SHDs) have a unique role in protecting and promoting workers' health. This mixed-methods study presents the first systematic investigation of SHDs' activities and capacity in both Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) and Workplace Health Promotion (WHP) in the United States (US).
Methods: National survey of OSH and WHP practitioners from each of 56 SHDs, followed by in-depth interviews with a subset of survey respondents.
Because Career Technical Education (CTE) programs at the community/technical college level are among the few places new construction workers receive training or preparation, they are an important vehicle for educating new and young workers about occupational health and safety (OSH). We developed recommendations for (1) OSH "core competencies" that all postsecondary construction students should achieve and (2) "essential elements" for OSH education in construction training programs. Based on a review of the literature, subject matter expert focus groups, and iterative engagement with an expert advisory group, we identified fourteen core competencies and a list of essential supporting elements at the school, program, and instructor levels.

In addition to genomic mutations, RNA editing is another major mechanism creating sequence variations in proteins by introducing nucleotide changes in mRNA sequences. Deregulated RNA editing contributes to different types of human diseases, including cancers. Here we report that peptides generated as a consequence of RNA editing are indeed naturally presented by human leukocyte antigen (HLA) molecules.

Background: Small construction businesses (SCBs) account for a disproportionate share of occupational injuries, days lost, and fatalities in the US and other modern economies. Owner/managers of SCBs confront risks associated with their own and workers' safety and business survival, and their occupational safety and health (OSH) related values and practices are key drivers of safety and business outcomes. Given owner/mangers are the key to understanding and affecting change in smaller firms, as well as the pressing need for improved OSH in small firms particularly in construction, there is a critical need to better understand SCB owners' readiness to improve or adopt enhanced OSH activities in their business.
