Background: Inferior vena cava thrombosis is a severe disease as it carries a higher risk of developing pulmonary embolism associated with a high mortality rate. The incidence of inferior vena cava thrombosis is extremely low and is commonly associated with outflow obstruction of the inferior vena cava. The frequency of traumatic diaphragmatic injuries is less than 1% of all traumatic injuries.

Background: The clinical value of soluble forms of programmed cell death-1 (sPD-1), PD ligand 1 (sPD-L1) and cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated protein-4 (sCTLA-4) for gastric cancer (GC) patients treated with nivolumab monotherapy has remained unknown.
Methods: Blood samples collected before nivolumab treatment from 439 GC patients enrolled in the DELIVER (Japan Clinical Cancer Research Organisation GC-08) trial were analysed for sPD-1, sPD-L1 and sCTLA-4. Corresponding baseline clinical data were also retrieved.

Objectives: Blue light imaging (BLI) and linked color imaging (LCI) are superior to conventional white light imaging for detecting esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Hence, we compared their diagnostic performances in ESCC screening.
Methods: This open-labeled, randomized controlled trial was performed at seven hospitals.

Purpose: Renal cancer surgery is frequently performed in small regional hospitals in Japan. This study evaluated the outcomes of renal cancer surgery, comparing results from the pre-robotic surgery era with those obtained with robotic surgery.
Methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted on patients who underwent renal cancer surgery between 2008 and 2013 at 14 hospitals, comprising 13 regional hospitals and a university hospital, registered in the Tohoku Urological Evidence-Based Medicine Study Group.

Breastfeeding has many benefits for infant growth and maternal health, such as reducing breast cancer risk. However, data on maternal factors influencing breastfeeding are insufficient. To clarify the associations between maternal lifestyle and diet during pregnancy and exclusive breastfeeding (EBF), we conducted a prospective study of pregnant women within the framework of the Japan Environment and Children's Study (a nationwide birth cohort study).

Early T-cell precursor (ETP) acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (ALL) is generally considered to be a high-risk subtype. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical outcomes of adult patients diagnosed with ETP-ALL or other T-cell ALL (non-ETP T-ALL). The subjects were 82 patients (ETP-ALL: n = 18, non-ETP T-ALL: n = 64) for whom relevant immunophenotype data needed for classification were available.

Introduction: The ACO Japan Cohort Study, a multicenter observational study, investigated the proportion of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who met the Japanese Respiratory Society (JRS) asthma-COPD overlap (ACO) diagnostic criteria, characteristics of ACO and non-ACO patients, and the patient transitions between ACO/non-ACO diagnosis over 2 years.
Patients And Methods: Patients with COPD were consecutively enrolled between June and December 2018 and followed up continuously for 2 years. All participating study sites were medical institutions where respiratory specialists routinely conducted medical examinations/tests required for ACO diagnosis.

Background: The guidelines recommend additional gastrectomy after noncurative endoscopic resection for early gastric cancers (EGCs). However, no additional treatment might be acceptable in some patients aged ≥ 85 years. We aimed to identify this patient group using the data in a highly aged area.

Objectives: In the treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) with bone metastases, radium-223 dichloride (Ra-223) is the only bone-targeted drug that shows survival benefits. Completing six courses of Ra-223 treatment is thought to be associated with better patient survival, but this treatment has a relatively high rate of acute adverse events.
Methods: This retrospective study included 85 patients from 12 institutions in Japan to investigate the clinical significance of the completion of Ra-223 treatment and acute adverse events in CRPC patients.

Background And Hypothesis: Around 20% of people at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis later develop a psychotic disorder, but it is difficult to predict who this will be. We assessed the incidence of hearing speech (termed speech illusions [SIs]) in noise in CHR participants and examined whether this was associated with adverse clinical outcomes.
Study Design: At baseline, 344 CHR participants and 67 healthy controls were presented with a computerized white noise task and asked whether they heard speech, and whether speech was neutral, affective, or whether they were uncertain about its valence.

Background: Although additional treatment is considered for patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) invading into the muscularis mucosa (pT1a-MM) or submucosa (pT1b-SM) after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), the actual benefits of this method remain to be elucidated.
Aims: We aimed to evaluate the prognostic benefits of additional treatment in such patients.
Methods: Between 2006 and 2017, we enrolled patients with pT1a-MM/pT1b-SM ESCC after ESD at 21 institutions in Japan.

Hypothermia has been shown to be associated with a high mortality rate among patients with sepsis. However, the relationship between hypothermia and body mass index (BMI) with respect to mortality remains to be elucidated. We conducted this study to assess the association between hypothermia and survival outcomes of patients with sepsis according to BMI categories.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to provide evidence for the revision of clinical practice guidelines for the management of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis by the Japan Research Committee for Intractable Vasculitis.
Methods: PubMed, CENTRAL, and the Japan Medical Abstracts Society databases were searched for articles published between 2015 and 2020 to update the systematic review for existing clinical questions, while PubMed, CENTRAL, EMBASE, and the Japan Medical Abstracts Society were searched for articles published between 2000 and 2020 to conduct a systematic review for newly developed clinical questions. The certainty of evidence was assessed with the GRADE approach.

Background: Cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking and obesity are known to be risk factors for colorectal cancer. These factors may affect survival after diagnosis, but evidence has been inconsistent. We investigated subsite-specific associations between prediagnosis smoking, alcohol drinking and body mass index and survival in colorectal cancer.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the production of various autoantibodies and deposition of immune complexes on tissues. Acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a life-threatening hematological disorder that rarely develops in SLE, mainly caused by inhibitory or clearing autoantibody against ADAMTS13. Although B cells play critical roles in the pathogenesis of two diseases, the role of B-cell depletion therapy using rituximab (RTX), a chimeric monoclonal antibody targeting CD20, in the management of TTP associated with SLE remains unclear.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. A comprehensive and detailed understanding of COPD care pathways from pre-diagnosis to acute care is required to understand the common barriers to optimal COPD care across diverse health systems.
Methods: Country-specific COPD care pathways were created for four high-income countries using international recommendations and country-specific guidelines, then populated with published epidemiological, clinical, and economic data.

Introduction: The ACO Registry Study was a multicenter, prospective, observational cohort study aiming to clarify the situation of asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap (ACO) within the COPD population using the Japanese Respiratory Society (JRS) criteria. We reported the proportion of patients who met the ACO criteria among the COPD population at study registration.
Methods: Using data collected at registration, we investigated the implementation of each diagnostic examination/test required for ACO diagnosis in the full analysis set.
