Cyclic adenosine monophosphate-response element-binding protein-1-regulated transcription coactivator-1 (CRTC1), a cytoplasmic coactivator that translocates to the nucleus in response to cAMP, is associated with obesity. We previously reported that deficiency in melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R)-expressing neurons, which regulate appetite and energy metabolism in the brain, causes hyperphagia and obesity under a high-fat diet (HFD). HFD is preferred for mice, and the dietary fat in HFD is the main factor contributing to its palatability.

An 80-year-old never-smoking woman, who underwent radiotherapy in combination with simultaneous intra-arterial chemotherapy for external auditory canal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) 10 years ago, was referred to our department due to a painful huge chest wall tumor. We conducted surgical resection combined with the right upper lobe and chest wall including the 3rd to 5th ribs and affected serratus anterior muscle. Histologically, atypical keratotic cells with the same morphology as external auditory canal SCC proliferated without the figure of carcinoma in situ or squamous dysplasia of the bronchial epithelium of the lung parenchyma adjacent to the tumor.

In extended solid-state materials, the manipulation of chemical bonds through redox reactions often leads to the emergence of interesting properties, such as unconventional superconductivity, which can be achieved by adjusting the Fermi level through, , intercalation and pressure. Here, we demonstrate that the internal 'biaxial strain' in tri-layered fluorite oxychloride photocatalysts can regulate bond formation and cleavage without redox processes. We achieve this by synthesizing the isovalent solid solution Bi Sb YOCl, which undergoes a structural phase transition from the ideal BiYOCl structure to the SbYOCl structure with (Bi,Sb)O rings.

Case Presentation: A 79-year-old man presented with a clamped tube because of massive bleeding from the tube following right chest tube replacement in the hospital of origin. The tube entered the inferior vena cava from the hepatic parenchyma via the right hepatic vein and was removed 15 h later because his hemodynamics stabilized.
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the intra-abdominal status related to postoperative pancreatic fistula by combining postoperative fluid collection and drain amylase levels.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 203 patients who underwent distal pancreatectomy and classified their postoperative abdominal status into four groups based on postoperative fluid collection size and drain amylase levels. We also evaluated the incidence of clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula in each group according to C-reactive protein values.
Background: Patients with acute ischemic stroke and active cancer have more severe neurological symptoms, elevated risks of stroke recurrence, and death compared with the general population. We examined whether von Willebrand factor (vWF) antigen levels at stroke onset were associated with the poor outcomes of patients with stroke and cancer.
Methods And Results: Using data from 90 patients with acute ischemic stroke and active cancer who were registered in the SCAN (Ischemic Stroke in Patients With Cancer and Neoplasia) study, a prospective multicenter, observational study in Japan, we divided patients into 2 groups according to their median vWF antigen levels (high, n=46; or low, n=44).
Aim: Altered gut microbiota has been proposed as one of the causes of exacerbation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19) from the perspective of the gut-lung axis. We aimed to evaluate gut microbiota in mechanically ventilated patients with COVID-19 prior to using antibiotics.
Methods: We retrospectively selected for enrollment COVID-19 patients who required mechanical ventilation on admission but who had not used antibiotics before admission to observe the influence of SARS-Cov-2 on gut microbiota.

Here we report a comparative study on the bottom-up synthesis of multi-element hydroxides composed of Mg, Al, Fe and Zn cations to understand the role of solvents. Two common solvents, water and ethylene glycol, a typical polyol, are used. The polyol-derived MgAlFeZn-OH are nanosheets with homogeneous elemental distribution, while the hydrothermal-derived MgAlFeZn-OH are mixtures of plate-like hydroxide layers and rod-like spinel oxides.

An accumulating body of evidence has led to the development of the cancer stem-cell (CSC) model which proposed that a subset of cells distinct from those that form the tumor mass regulated the tumor growth rate over a long period. Various types of therapy have been developed for cancer treatment. The major conventional therapies are chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgical excision.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFMonoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is a benign but precancerous condition that can progress to multiple myeloma. Patients with MGUS are typically monitored closely for signs of disease progression, but in some cases, they may also develop renal insufficiency, a condition known as monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance (MGRS). In MGRS, M-protein secreted by a nonmalignant or premalignant cell clone triggers renal damage by definition.
