Aim: This study aims to evaluate the association between individual factors/personality traits and depression and anxiety in family members living with staff working on the frontline of COVID-19 care.
Methods: The subjects were family members over the age of 15 years living with staff members of a COVID-19 frontline hospital. Between March 27 and April 11, 2021, 204 self-administered anonymous questionnaires were distributed, and 149 responses were received.
Background: Few prediction models for individuals with early-stage out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) have undergone external validation. This study aimed to externally validate updated prediction models for OHCA outcomes using a large nationwide dataset.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFAim: Altered gut microbiota has been proposed as one of the causes of exacerbation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19) from the perspective of the gut-lung axis. We aimed to evaluate gut microbiota in mechanically ventilated patients with COVID-19 prior to using antibiotics.
Methods: We retrospectively selected for enrollment COVID-19 patients who required mechanical ventilation on admission but who had not used antibiotics before admission to observe the influence of SARS-Cov-2 on gut microbiota.
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by the heterogeneous distribution of lung aeration along a gravitational direction due to increased lung density. Therefore, the lung available for ventilation is usually limited to ventral, nondependent lung regions and has been called the "baby" lung. In ARDS, ventilator-induced lung injury is known to occur in nondependent "baby" lungs, as ventilation is shifted to ventral, nondependent lung regions, increasing stress and strain.

Methods: This study was a descriptive epidemiological study with a 3-year study period from January 2019 to December 2021.

The nationwide registry-based data of the Japanese Trauma Data Bank were analyzed to elucidate the impact of COVID-19 on the epidemiology, treatment, and outcomes of major trauma patients.
Methods: Among patients transported directly from the injury site by ambulance with an Injury Severity Score of ≥16, we compared patients managed from April to December in 2019 to those managed from April to December in 2020.
One of 4 patients (25%) and 2 of 3 patients (67%) were correctly diagnosed by conventional and hot boring biopsies, respectively. The median procedure time of conventional and hot boring biopsies was 21 (range, 13-33) and 17 (range, 16-23) min, respectively. Rapid on-site evaluation was performed totally 12 times in 7 patients.
