Advances in staging and more refined radiation techniques and the combination chemotherapy have lead marked improvement of survival of patients with Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The important prognostic factors used for choosing treatment programs are stage, histology, tumor bulk and the site of involvement for patients with early stage disease. Tumor bulk is considered as an important variable when patients are treated with radiation therapy alone.

The cases of 36 patients referred for radiotherapy of the tongue after an excisional biopsy or after an inadequate excision of the tongue cancer have been reviewed. In 32 patients treated by radiotherapy, the actuarial survival rate at five years was 86%, and the local rate control, was 82%. The local control rate for those treated by interstitial radiotherapy (Int.

Treatment consisted of radiation therapy alone in 96 patients and 149 patients were treated with chemotherapy combined. Five-year survival and relapse-free survival rates were 57% and 50%, respectively.

Of these, 28 patients (11%) had histology of low-grade malignancy, and 218 (87%) had intermediate malignancy. Waldeyer's ring was the most frequent site of involvements (114 cases), extranodal site (91), and cervical lymph node(s) (46) in the order.

For patients with stage I-II malignant lymphoma with low-grade malignancy, five-year survival rates after radiation therapy are 75-100%. For patients with intermediate malignancy, five-year survival rates after radiation therapy alone are 70-100% for patients with pathological stage I-II and 45-75% for clinical stage I-II. Radiation dose to the tumor at least 40 Gy was required to produce consistent local control.

The improvement on the treatment of malignant lymphoma have led to prolonged survival for many patients. However, they are at risk of late complications of the disease and treatment. Impaired function due to radiation-induced injury of normal tissues, such as cardiac, pulmonary, or thyroid dysfunction, becoming manifest at few months to years after treatment.

Radiation therapy has curative potential for patients with stage I-II disease, and five-year relapse-free survival rate in excess of 80% can be expected. Despite an advantage of chemotherapy combined with radiation therapy in improving relapse-free survival, no significant advantage has yet been demonstrated in allover survival. Patients with stage IIIA1 may also be treated radiation therapy alone with results of five-year survival rate of 53-60%.

The effect of ethanol ingestion on the hepatic sinusoidal blood flow velocity was investigated in rats, using in vivo microscopy system with dual-slit photometric method. In steady state, before ethanol ingestion, the hepatic sinusoidal blood flow velocity determined at 18 points ranged widely from 54 to 245 micron/sec and the mean value was 144 +/- 13 micron/sec. After acute ethanol ingestion (1g/kg), the averaged sinusoidal blood flow velocity increased significantly to 197 +/- 17 micron/sec, while the width of sinusoids showed no apparent change.
