The efficacy of transcatheter oily chemoembolization (TOCE) was evaluated in 82 patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by computed tomography more than 6 months after TOCE. A doxorubicin in oil emulsion (DOE) was administered to 42 cases and an epirubicin in oil emulsion (EOE) was administered to 40 cases. No significant differences were found in the patient background characteristics between the DOE-treated group and the EOE-treated group.

Intrathymic injection of donor bone marrow cells (ITBMCs) at the time of transplantation and treatment with antilymphocyte serum (ALS) permitted the indefinite survival of Brown Norway (BN, RT1n) rat heart grafts in 6 out of 8 Lewis (LEW, RT1l) rat recipients, LEW recipients with long-surviving BN heart grafts (LSGs) also accepted additional BN heart grafts without further immunosuppression, though they rejected Piebald Virol Glaxo (PVG, RT1c) rat heart grafts in the usual fashion. In the in vitro study, the proliferative response of the lymphocytes from LEW recipients with LSGs remained suppressed when they were stimulated by BN spleen cells, but not when stimulated by PVG cells. Bone marrow cells (BMCs) from LEW rats with LSGs showed strong, nonspecific, suppressive effects on the proliferative response in the mixed lymphocyte culture reaction, suggesting that one of the possible explanations for tolerance might be the involvement of a suppressor mechanism.

Polymyositis and dermatomyositis are inflammatory muscular diseases of unknown etiology which have interstitial pneumonitis as a serious complication. From 1987 to 1994, we used cyclosporine to treat 14 polymyositis/dermatomyositis patients (8 with and 6 without interstitial pneumonitis). In combination with prednisolone, cyclosporine was either added to or substituted for conventional cytotoxic drugs (azathioprine, cyclophosphamide and methotrexate).

Dynamic MR imaging for extraserosal invasion of advanced gastric cancer.

Abdom Imaging

February 1997

Department of Radiology, Osaka Teishin Hospital, 2-6-40 Karasugatsuji, Tennoji-ku, Osaka 543, Japan.

Dynamic magnetic resonance (MR) images in 37 patients with gastric cancers were obtained by a two-dimensional fast multiplanar spoiled gradient technique. The degree of tumor invasion was classified into four grades regarding a low-intensity band between the stomach and surrounding fat. Advanced gastric cancer was strongly enhanced, appearing as a thickened wall, by the contrast medium during the early to delayed phases of dynamic studies.

Objective: We correlated MR imaging findings with those from flow cytometry and determined prognostic factors of patients with major salivary gland lesions.

Subjects And Methods: DNA ploidy (11 aneuploid, 35 diploid lesions) and S-phase fraction (SPF) (12 high-SPF, 28 low-SPF lesions) percentages as determined by flow cytometric technique in 46 major salivary gland lesions were correlated with MR findings and signal-intensity ratios of lesion to muscle on fast spin-echo T2-weighted images, unenhanced spin-echo T1-weighted images, and gadolinium-enhanced fat-suppressed spin-echo T1-weighted images. SPF percentages were correlated with the three signal-intensity ratios by stepwise regression analysis.

Treatment with 5-fluorouracil and its derivatives causes DNA double strand breaks in the S phase, and the subsequent cell death. A 5-Fluorouracil derivative (UFT), that is converted to 5-fluorouracil in vivo, was administered orally at a dose of 18 mg/kg/day to nude mice bearing human breast cancer for 28 consecutive days. The tumors on day 7, 14, 21, and 28 after treatment were examined histopathologically and by flow cytometric cell cycle analysis.

Twelve patients with liver metastases of breast cancer were treated with hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy using 20-30 mg/body of epi-adriamycin (epi-ADM) every 2 weeks and continuous infusion of 250 mg/body/day of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). All patients were followed by systemic chemo-endocrine therapy with oral administration of 600-1,200 mg/day of me droxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) alone or with 600-800 mg/day of 5'-deoxy-5-flurouridine (5'-DFUR). The response rate was 41.
