Heart failure is a major manifestation of vitamin B deficiency; beriberi. We have previously reported that even vitamin B insufficiency, milder than deficiency, is a risk for heart failure in the institutionalized elderly. Then in this cross-sectional study, sixty-eight cardiology outpatients were evaluated for their whole blood vitamin B and plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) concentrations, a sensitive marker of heart failure, as well as their dietary intake.

Objectives: To describe and compare the references cited in popular books about diet and health between the USA and Japan.
Design: Books were selected based on their best-seller rankings in the diet and health category of online bookstores. We identified references throughout all pages of the books and examined the number of references, reference format (identifiable or not) and presence of specific types of references, such as systematic reviews of human research.

Although motor coordination or motor skill learning are improved by taking vitamin D in the animal experiment, muscle function have not been estimated. Here we examined the effect of vitamin D administration on motor coordination and motor skill learning, muscle strength, and muscle volume in mice fed a vitamin D deficient diet. In mice fed a vitamin D deficient diet, serum calcium and 25(OH)D concentrations were measured.

Purpose: To investigate the effects of a combination of running and food restriction on the chemical properties of the bone in young female rats using Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, we investigated whether the chemical property parameters correlated with the bone-breaking strength.
Methods: Female Sprague-Dawley rats (7 weeks old) were randomly divided into four groups: sedentary and ad libitum feeding (SED, n = 8), voluntary running exercise and ad libitum feeding (EX, n = 8), sedentary and 30% food-restricted (SED-FR, n = 8), and voluntary running exercise and 30% food-restricted (EXFR, n = 8).

Background: The indicator amino acid oxidation (IAAO) method has been accepted as an approach to evaluate habitual protein requirements under free-living conditions.
Objectives: This scoping review reports on literature that evaluated protein requirements in humans using the IAAO methods.
Methods: Three databases (PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, and ProQuest) were systematically searched to identify studies that evaluated protein requirements using the IAAO method published in English until 5 June, 2023.

Recent studies have described that vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency is associated with hypertension, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia, which are major components of metabolic syndrome causing atherosclerosis. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration and atherosclerotic disease risk factors in healthy Japanese adults. In the present cross-sectional study, 1,177 subjects (348 males and 829 females) aged 20-72 y living in Japan (34.

Background And Objectives: Gastrectomy causes vitamin B-12 deficiency since vitamin B-12 requires gastric acid and intrinsic factor for its absorption. Vitamin B-12 deficiency is considered to develop years after gastrectomy because of large hepatic storage. However, most gastric cancer develops after long-standing atrophic gastritis with vitamin B-12 malabsorption.

For microbiological management of water quality, it is important to identify bacteria and to understand the community structure. To analyze the community structure during water purification and distribution, we selected a distribution system in which water from other water treatment facilities was not mixed with the target water. Changes in the bacterial community structure during treatment and distribution processes in a slow filtration water treatment facility were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing with a portable sequencer MinION.

Pachydermoperiostosis (PDP) is a rare hereditary disease characterized by digital clubbing, pachydermia, and periostosis. We describe a Japanese male patient with PDP who was differentially diagnosed with acromegaly by identification of compound heterozygous variants in . Recent studies have reported various clinical manifestations, as well as skeletal and dermal features, in patients with PDP.

Since the time of Darwin, theories have been proposed on the origin and functions of music; however, the subject remains enigmatic. The literature shows that music is closely related to important human behaviours and abilities, namely, cognition, emotion, reward and sociality (co-operation, entrainment, empathy and altruism). Notably, studies have deduced that these behaviours are closely related to testosterone (T) and oxytocin (OXT).

Private wells are used daily worldwide as convenient household water sources. In Japan, where water supply coverage is high, well water is occasionally used for non-potable purposes, such as irrigation and watering. Currently, the main microbiological test of well water is designed to detect Escherichia coli, which is an indicator of fecal contamination, using culture methods.

The control of microbes in manned spaceflight is essential to reducing the risk of infection and maintaining crew health. The primary issue is ensuring the safety of a potable water system, where simultaneous monitoring of microbial abundance and community structure is needed. In this paper, we develop a flow cytometry-based counting protocol targeting cellular flavin autofluorescence as a tool for rapid monitoring of bacterial cells in water.

The novel coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic has considerably impacted children's lives. The aim of this study was to determine whether the pandemic affected mealtime regularity among preschool children and whether maintaining regular mealtimes or changes in mealtime regularity during the pandemic were related to dietary balance, including chronological relationships. This online cross-sectional survey involving individuals registered with a company that provides meals to children aged 2-6 years was conducted in February 2021.

Avoidance of sunlight and self-restraint due to the COVID-19 pandemic may contribute to reduced vitamin D status. This study provides comparable data on vitamin D status in Japanese young women and assesses the effect of lifestyle, including changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, on vitamin D status. In study 1, 39 young healthy Japanese women aged 21-25 y were recruited from May 2016-June 2017.

Background And Aims: Despite reports on the impact of vitamin D status on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity, the association between low vitamin D status and severe COVID-19 remains unclear. Moreover, researchers have not determined the aforementioned association in Japanese patients. This study aimed to investigate the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and COVID-19 severity in Japanese patients.

Background: Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is associated with an increased risk for lifestyle-related diseases. In Japan, VDD is quite prevalent in all age groups, with its high risk in young women. Furthermore, its association during pregnancy with gestational hypertension and low birth weight has also been reported.

Because of the high mortality from myocardial infarction and stroke, there is a great demand for finding novel methods of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of these diseases. Most of the current tests measure important determinants of thrombosis such as platelet function, coagulation and fibrinolysis in isolation; therefore, a global test measuring the actual thrombotic status would be more useful in clinical conditions. We obtained considerable experience by using the global thrombosis test, which determines the actual thrombotic status by taking into account the measured platelet reactivity, coagulation and fibrinolytic activities.

The Japan Society of Clinical Oncology (JSCO) published the "JSCO Clinical Practice Guidelines 2017 for Fertility Preservation in Childhood, Adolescent, and Young Adult Cancer Patients" in 2017. This was the first guideline in cancer reproductive medicine in Japan. In the field of cancer reproductive medicine, close cooperation between an oncologist and a physician for reproductive medicine is important from before treatment initiation until long after treatment.
