Background: Docetaxel (DOC) plus ramucirumab (RAM) has been recommended as an optimal therapy for previously treated patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In a clinical setting, there are few reports about DOC plus RAM, therefore its effect on factors such as Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status (PS) and metastatic sites is still unknown.
Methods: We recruited NSCLC patients who received DOC plus RAM in four medical facilities in Japan from June 2016 to March 2020.
This is the report from the fifth meeting of the Harmonising Outcome Measures for Eczema initiative (HOME V). The meeting was held on 12-14 June 2017 in Nantes, France, with 81 participants. The main aims of the meeting were (i) to achieve consensus over the definition of the core domain of long-term control and how to measure it and (ii) to prioritize future areas of research for the measurement of the core domain of quality of life (QoL) in children.

Background: Homozygous deletion of 9p21 detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and loss of BRCA1-associated protein 1 (BAP1) expression detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC) are useful for the differentiation between malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) and reactive mesothelial hyperplasia. The authors previously described that IHC expression of the protein product of the methylthioadenosine phosphorylase (MTAP) gene, which is localized in the 9p21 chromosomal region, was correlated with the deletion status of 9p21 FISH in MPM tissues. In the current study, the authors investigated whether a combination of MTAP and BAP1 IHC could distinguish MPM from reactive mesothelial cells (RMC) in cell blocks obtained from pleural effusions.

Objectives: Differentiating malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) from reactive mesothelial hyperplasia (RMH) is still challenging. Detection of homozygous deletion (HD) of 9p21 region including p16 (p16) by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and immunohistochemical detection of loss of BRCA1 associated protein 1 (BAP1), are reliable markers for MPM diagnosis. However, not all laboratories are equipped to perform 9p21 FISH; immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a more common and feasible technique.

Differentiation of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) from benign mesothelial proliferation remains problematic. Loss of nuclear staining of BRCA1-associated protein 1 (BAP1; detected using immunohistochemistry (IHC)) and homozygous deletion (HD) of p16 (detected using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)) are useful for differentiation of MPM from reactive mesothelial hyperplasia (RMH), but the correlation between BAP1 expression loss and p16 HD has not been fully described. We performed BAP1 IHC and p16-specific FISH for 40 MPM and 20 RMH cases, and measured proportions of cells showing BAP1 expression and p16 HD for each case.

Objectives: Homozygous deletion (homo-d) of the p16 (CDKN2A) gene, as determined by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), helps differentiate malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) from reactive mesothelial hyperplasia (RMH). Heterozygous deletion (hetero-d) has also been identified variably in p16 FISH. This study aimed to investigate the significance of homo-d and hetero-d of p16 in the diagnosis and prognosis of MPM.

Because most of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) patients first present with pleural effusion, detection of mesothelioma cells on effusion smears is critical for early diagnosis. Recently, accumulating evidence indicating that the cytological diagnosis of MPM supported by ancillary techniques is as reliable as that based on histopathology has led to new guidelines for the cytopathologic diagnosis of MPM. Based on the guidelines, a combination of cytomorphological criteria and verification by ancillary techniques is required for the cytologic diagnosis of MPM.

Differentiating malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) cells morphologically from reactive mesothelial hyperplasia cells is problematic. Homozygous deletion (HD) of p16 (CDKN2A), detected by FISH, is a good marker of malignancy and is useful to differentiate between these cells. However, the correlation between the p16 status of effusion smears and that of the underlying MPM tissues has not been investigated.

To compare the efficacy of antipsychotics (APs) for delirium treatment in patients with cancer, 27 patients treated with 1 of the 4 APs, haloperidol (HPD), risperidone (RIS), olanzapine (OLZ), and quetiapine (QTP), were divided into 2 groups: long half-life (T1/2; HPD, RIS, and OLZ) versus short T1/2 (QTP) or the multiacting receptor-targeted APs (MARTAs; OLZ and QTP) versus the non-MARTA (HPD and RIS). The symptom severity was evaluated by the memorial delirium rating scale (MDAS) on days 0, 3, and 7 following intervention. Significant improvements in total MDAS scores were found in all groups on day 3.

A ringed polytetrafluoroethylene graft was applied to reduce clamping time for a patent major vein. In case 1, after suturing the ringed graft to the right appendage, the other end was inserted in the distal direction of the left brachiocephalic vein and secured by ligation. In case 2, to repair an extensive superior vena cava defect, the graft was wrapped with the remnant venous wall and fixed with a continuous suture.

We describe a case of pleomorphic carcinoma showing a recurrent tumor with massive hemorrhage and myxoid change in the chest wall 2 months after complete resection. Whereas specimens from the initial surgery revealed both adenosquamous carcinoma and sarcomatous elements, the recurrent tumor predominantly consisted of a sarcomatous element. The recurrent tumor had stronger immunoreactivity for mesenchymal markers than the primary tumor, indicating that the sarcomatous element had more malignant potential than the epithelial element.

We evaluated the effect of the displayed image sizes on observers' ability to detect nodular ground-glass opacity (n-GGO) on CT and investigated the optimal viewing size for soft-copy reading at CT screening for lung cancer. A total of 46 patients' high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) images (22 patients with one GGO; 24 without GGO) were displayed on a monochromatic liquid crystal display monitor at a resolution of 1,200 × 1,600. HRCT was presented on the screen with cine-mode display.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between display sizes of high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) images for detecting ground-glass opacity (GGO) and observer performance using a digital contrast-detail (d-CD) phantom. A structure of the d-CD phantom was determined on the basis of the actual images of GGOs and background noises of 22 patients who were diagnosed as GGO by chest HRCT. The d-CD phantom has a 512×512 matrix in size and has total of 100 holes: the diameter of these holes increases stepwise from 2 to 20 pixels with 2 pixels interval in a vertical direction and the CT value varies stepwise from 2 to 200 HU in a horizontal direction.

Micronodular pneumocyte hyperplasia (MNPH) is often associated with tuberous sclerosis complex and/or lymphangioleiomyomatosis. We present the case of a 45-year-old woman with MNPH without evidence of either. A preoperative high-resolution chest computed topographic scan demonstrated a ground-glass opacity 8 mm in diameter that revealed the possibility of atypical adenomatous hyperplasia (AAH) or bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC).

Objective: Although malignant pleural effusion or dissemination is regarded as T4 per TNM classification of lung cancer, the prognostic significance in staging of pleural lavage cytologic examination remains undetermined. The purpose of this study was to clarify the utility of pleural lavage cytologic staging as a prognostic factor in patients with non-small cell lung cancer.
Methods: In 1271 patients with lung cancer who underwent curative resection, intraoperative pleural lavage cytologic examination was performed at thoracotomy (first cytologic examination), immediately after pulmonary resection and mediastinal lymph node dissection (second cytologic examination), and after last washing of pleural cavity (third cytologic examination).

Gefitinib has a modest activity in previously treated patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the efficacy and safety of gefitinib monotherapy in untreated advanced NSCLC is not known. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 12 patients of NSCLC who were unfit or refused cytotoxic chemotherapy, and were treated with a single-agent gefitinib as first-line therapy in our hospital.
