Background: Pathological fracture of the proximal femur is a main cause of cancer patients losing their ability to walk. Although both osteosynthetic devices (predominantly intramedullary nails) and prosthetic replacement have been widely performed for treatment, controversies exist regarding which procedure should be used for the various conditions. In order to decide the eligibility criteria of a planned randomized prospective study about the treatment of pathological fractures of the proximal femur, we assessed the factors affecting the selection of operative procedures using questionnaires sent to the members of the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Study Group (BSTTSG) of the Japan Clinical Oncology Group (JCOG).

A randomized Phase II/III trial was planned to commence in March 2014. Perioperative chemotherapy with adriamycin plus ifosfamide is the current standard treatment for T2bN0M0 high-grade non-round cell soft tissue sarcoma. The purpose of this study is to confirm the non-inferiority of perioperative chemotherapy with gemcitabine and docetaxel to adriamycin plus ifosfamide for patients with T2bN0M0 or any TN1M0 non-round cell soft tissue sarcoma in the extremities and body wall.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to introduce our protocol for contrast-enhanced multiphase dynamic ultrasonography (US) and examine the effectiveness of this method for characterizing liver tumors.
Methods: The subjects were 142 patients with liver tumors. The final diagnoses were 58 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs), 4 cholangiocellular carcinomas (CCCs), 14 metastases, 29 hemangiomas, 6 cases of focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH), and 31 other benign lesions.

Expression of N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase V (GnT-V) in colon cancer has been shown to be related to hematogenous metastasis and poor prognosis. To investigate the mechanism by which cancer cells expressing GnT-V metastasize to distant organs, we established GnT-V-overexpressing DLD-1 and WiDr cells (human colon cancer cell lines) by transfecting them with a GnT-V expression vector. Attachment to endothelial cells expressing E-selectin was studied, and expression of the E-selectin ligand, sialyl Lewis x, in colon cancer cells was investigated.

They participated in the External Quality Control Survey by the Japan Medical Association. Most laboratories got A or B in evaluation criteria for most test items, but the results of AST, ALT and gamma-GTP were unsatisfactory.

To investigate mechanisms for regulation of intracellular cAMP involved in cancer cell invasion, phosphodiesterase (PDE) activity in a colon cancer cell line, DLD-1, was studied. Activities of PDE 2, 4, and 5 were detected in DLD-1 cells by pharmacological approach. Specific and cell permeable inhibitors for those PDEs were used to determine which PDE is responsible for cAMP turnover involved in cancer cell motility.

This was a prospective study to evaluate tissue harmonic imaging (THI) for the diagnosis of focal liver lesions. A total of 15 reviewers read 100 randomly arranged liver images, a fundamental grey-scale image (FGI) and a THI (transmitted: 2 MHz, received: 4 MHz) of each of 50 patients (29 with liver cirrhosis, 42 with focal lesions) taken from the same section. The mean value of overall accuracy for detecting lesions (presence or absence) was significantly higher with THI (82.

This pattern is defined as an image of a tumor area filled with color in contrast to the surrounding liver. After contrast enhancement, the detectability of a "feeding artery" increased.
