A 54-year-old woman underwent retroperitoneal laparoscopic nephrectomy for a non-functional left kidney due to ureter stone in September 2022. She was operated without problems. Seven hours postoperatively, she complained of chest pain with a distressed facial expression.

Aggressive Prostate Cancer After a 14-Year Gonadotropin Therapy: A Case Report.

A 40-year-old man with a four-year history of infertility was referred to our department. The semen analysis revealed low motility, and the blood test showed low luteinizing hormone levels. Gonadotropin therapy was initiated upon the diagnosis of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

Background: The Bristow coracoid transfer procedure is a reliable technique for treating anterior shoulder instability in patients with large glenoid bone loss or those involved in collision sports. However, its success is marred by its inferior bone union rate of the coracoid process as compared to the Latarjet procedure. This study aimed to evaluate whether arthroscopic confirmation of the secured coracoid fixation during the Bristow procedure improves the bone union rate and clinical outcomes as compared to the open procedure.

Association between Sense of Coherence, Disease-Specific Symptoms, and Health-Related Quality of Life among Japanese Patients with Ulcerative Colitis: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction: We examined the associations among disease-related symptoms, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and sense of coherence (SOC) in Japanese patients with ulcerative colitis (UC).

Methods: This cross-sectional survey involved patients and physicians at 23 hospitals specializing in UC treatment in Japan (December 2019-December 2020). Multiple linear regression analysis was performed using scores on the Mental Health and General Health subscales of the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey as outcomes and SOC as the main independent variable.

Mouse Type-I Interferon-Mannosylated Albumin Fusion Protein for the Treatment of Chronic Hepatitis.

Although a lot of effort has been put into creating drugs and combination therapies against chronic hepatitis, no effective treatment has been established. Type-I interferon is a promising therapeutic for chronic hepatitis due to its excellent anti-inflammatory effects through interferon receptors on hepatic macrophages. To develop a type-I IFN equipped with the ability to target hepatic macrophages through the macrophage mannose receptor, the present study designed a mouse type-I interferon-mannosylated albumin fusion protein using site-specific mutagenesis and albumin fusion technology.

Serum MYCN as a predictive biomarker of prognosis and therapeutic response in the prevention of hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence.

The proto-oncogene MYCN expression marked a cancer stem-like cell population in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and served as a therapeutic target of acyclic retinoid (ACR), an orally administered vitamin A derivative that has demonstrated promising efficacy and safety in reducing HCC recurrence. This study investigated the role of MYCN as a predictive biomarker for therapeutic response to ACR and prognosis of HCC. MYCN gene expression in HCC was analyzed in the Cancer Genome Atlas and a Taiwanese cohort (N = 118).

Transvaginal Polytetrafluoroethylene Mesh Surgery for Pelvic Organ Prolapse: One-Year Safety and Efficacy Results.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) mesh by comparing conventionally used polypropylene (PP) mesh in tension-free vaginal mesh (TVM) surgery for pelvic organ prolapse (POP).

Methods: We conducted an observational cohort study of patients who underwent TVM using a PTFE or PP mesh. PTFE was used from June 2019 to May 2021, and PP mesh from January 2018 to May 2019.

Randomized phase I/II study of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor peptide vaccines for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.

Aim: We evaluated the safety and efficacy of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR)-targeted peptide vaccines for the immunization of patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who had responded to transarterial chemoembolization.

Methods: Twenty-two patients were randomized 1:1 to receive VEGFR-targeted peptides or placebo. The primary end-point was the safety assessment of the immunization.

Lost Needle During Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Laparoscopic or robotic radical prostatectomy and partial nephrectomy require needle suturing and manipulation. Although uncommon, if a needle is lost during laparoscopy, locating and removing it is challenging. Here, we report a case of needle loss during robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RARP).

Association Between Preoperative Glenoid Bone Loss and Postoperative Outcomes After Coracoid Transfer Combined With Open Bankart Repair: Comparison of the Bristow and Latarjet Techniques.

Glenoid defect size increases but the bone fragment rarely resorbs in shoulders with recurrent anterior instability.

Background: With recurrent anterior instability the bone fragment of a bony Bankart lesion is often small compared to the glenoid defect. The purpose of the present study was to clarify the changes to both the bone fragment and glenoid defect over time in a single subject.

Methods: Participants were patients who underwent computed tomography (CT) at least twice after an instability event between 2004 and 2021 and had a fragment-type glenoid at first CT.

Inflammation of the adipose tissue in the retroperitoneal cavity adjacent to pelvic endometriosis.

Aim: Peritoneal endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease particularly associated with macrophages. Of note, adipose tissues with fibrotic changes in the context of peritoneal endometriotic lesions are often observed during surgery. However, the characteristics of fibrotic adipose tissues in endometriosis are still unknown.

Laparoscopic ventral rectopexy using the transanal vacuum test for complete rectal prolapse.

Laparoscopic ventral rectopexy was performed in 84 patients with complete rectal prolapse from January 2016 to December 2019. In the initial 27 cases, three cases had recurrence, especially in cases of a long rectal prolapse measuring over 10 cm. In order to avoid recurrence, the transanal vacuum test was performed following the dissection of the rectovaginal septum towards the pelvic floor.

IFITM1 is a Novel, Highly Sensitive Marker for Endometriotic Stromal Cells in Ovarian and Extragenital Endometriosis.

When the presence of endometriotic lesions are not evident by hematoxylin and eosin staining, CD10 is used to highlight and confirm the presence of endometriotic stroma. However, CD10 is not specific only to the endometrial stroma but is also expressed in many other cells. Recently, interferon-inducible transmembrane protein 1 (IFITM1) was reported as a highly specific immunohistochemical marker of normal endometrial stroma and endometrial stromal neoplasm.

PAX8: A Highly Sensitive Marker for the Glands in Extragenital Endometriosis.

In cases of extragenital endometriosis or microscopic endometriosis lesions, pathological diagnosis can be challenging because endometriotic stroma and glands represent only a minor component of fibrotic endometriotic lesions. For better accuracy of diagnosis, the development of a sensitive and specific epithelial marker is beneficial. Previous studies showed that PAX8 is a highly sensitive and specific marker for primary and metastatic Mullerian epithelial tumors.

Probucol Trial for Secondary Prevention of Atherosclerotic Events in Patients with Coronary Heart Disease (PROSPECTIVE).

Aims: Although intensive statin therapy reduced cardiovascular risks, cardiovascular events have not been completely prevented. Probucol is a potent antioxidant and reduces tendon xanthomas in familial hypercholesterolemia patients despite reduction of high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (HDL-C). We investigated whether probucol can reduce cardiovascular events on top of conventional lipid-lowering therapy in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD).

Correlation between Skeletal Muscle Mass and Adverse Events of Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in Patients with Gastric Cancer.

Purpose: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) followed by surgery is a promising treatment strategy for patients with advanced gastric cancer. Severe toxicity associated with the treatment may reduce the dose intensity of chemotherapy, resulting in the effect of chemotherapy being attenuated. Recently, skeletal muscle mass has been reported to be associated with the treatment outcomes of cancer patients.
