Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers in both genders. Even though interleukin (IL)-17A was shown to play an important role in intestinal tumourigenesis and CRC, other IL-17 family members were not studied well. We therefore studied the expression of IL-17 cytokine family members in CRC.

A recurrent aphthous ulcer (RAU) is a common inflammatory ulcerative lesion affecting oral mucosa. We studied the eventual apoptosis of epithelial cells from the point of view of ulcer and inflammation. RAU lesions and healthy mucosa samples were immunostained for caspase-3 and high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1).

The objective of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of common questionnaires and measures of physical performance in low back pain (LBP) syndrome. One hundred and fourteen patients with LBP classified according to the Quebec Task Force were compared with 50 patients with different pain syndromes but without apparent LBP. The discriminating value of each variable was estimated by calculating the area under the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve.

A study group of 204 patients operated for idiopathic scoliosis by the Harrington method at The Orthopedic Hospital of the Invalid Foundation (Orton) between 1970 and 1975 was studied to evaluate the integration of these patients into society regarding work outside the home, and to evaluate the patients' adaptation to their illness and factors relating to this adaptation. A brief intelligence test was also given. The mean age at the time of the first operation was 14 years, and at the time of follow-up it was 33 years.

The aim of this study was to see whether results of anterior interbody lumbar fusion could be improved with the help of an external transpedicular device. Anterior interbody lumbar fusion was carried out in 83 patients, using the technique described by Suzuki. Fifty-six (67%) patients were fused with the Magerl-Schläpfer external fixator device as a posterior support.

Study Objective: To evaluate the treatment, extent of recovery, and residual disability in 26 iatrogenic cases of serratus paralysis.
Patients And Study Design: Seventeen cases of serratus anterior paralysis had occurred following a local invasive procedure along the course of the long thoracic nerve, including seven first-rib resections, four mastectomies with axillary dissection, two scalenotomies, two surgical treatments of spontaneous pneumothorax, and two infraclavicular plexus anesthesia. Eight cases of paralysis had occurred after general anesthesia for patients who had undergone surgery for diverse clinical reasons.

We recorded the musculoskeletal performance capacity of 25 patients suffering from chronic severe low back pain before and during the external fixation test of the lumbar spine. The capacity was measured by isometric and isokinetic lifting, repetitive upper extremity lifting with a load, repetitive squatting, and the walking distance. Only walking distance was increased by fixation of the spine.

The biologic fixation and strength of fixation of the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) Gore-Tex ligament prosthesis was investigated in sheep knees. The device was inserted to replace the anterior cruciate ligament according to the recommended technique. Histological bone tunnel evaluation together with mechanical tensile studies were done at 6, 12, and 18 months.

101 hips were revised with cemented Lubinus prostheses after failed primary cemented arthroplasty, and followed for 5 (4-9) years. Radiographically, 41 hips (36 femoral stems and 13 acetabular components) had become loose. The use of an intramedullary plug at the revision did not prevent sinking of the prosthesis.

We studied tissue samples of noninfected delayed union or nonunion of diaphyseal bones in 10 patients immunopathologically and neuroimmunologically 4 to 25 months after the primary injury. Samples mostly consisted of vascularized connective tissue of varying density with the proline-4-hydroxylase-containing fibroblast as the major cell type. Most inflammatory cells were CD4 T-lymphocytes and their number was always twice that of the CD8 positive cells.

The results in 96 patients (106 hips) with Perthes' disease who had had conservative noncontainment treatment were studied after 35 (28-47) years. At skeletal maturity, the radiographic result was poor in 65 hips. At the average age of 43 years, radiographic signs of arthrosis were found in 48 patients (51 hips); 5 patients had had hip replacement and 13 patients had symptoms justifying that procedure.

We analyzed clinical and radiographic long-term results in 96 patients (106 hips) with Perthes' disease 35 years after nonoperative treatment. 19 hips in 17 patients had early radiographic signs indicating atypically severe course of the disease and poor prognosis. None of them was radiographically good at skeletal maturity; 2 cases were fair and 17 poor.

The fibrous interface tissue between hip prostheses and surrounding bone is often morphologically and functionally synovial-like. The fibroblast is the major cell type; but also giant cells and macrophages are present, and their numbers are increased in the occasional adverse-type host reaction to the prosthesis. Adverse lytic reactions are often associated with methylmethacrylate debris, whereas in cementless cases, polyethylene and metallic (titanium) wear debris seem to cause adverse reactions.

A population sample of 27,000 Finnish women and 30,000 men was studied for the presence of a thoracic vertebral fracture. In both sexes, the prevalence of such fractures increased with age: after 40 years of age in the men and after 55 years of age in the women. The interaction of sex and age was significant, and even when the other determinants were adjusted for.

We analyzed various prognostic factors in 112 children operated on for Perthes' disease (Catterall's groups II-IV); special attention was paid to acetabular changes and postoperative containment. The radiographic results of 126 intertrochanteric femoral varus osteotomies were analyzed 2-16 years postoperatively. Catterall's grouping or head-at-risk phenomenon, bicompartmentalization of the acetabulum, and preoperative subluxation of the femoral head did not correlate with the result.

A study was made of the association between disc degeneration observed in plain radiographs, in discograms (Adams' classification), and instability expressed as abnormal angular movement of lumbar vertebrae. The series included 169 discs in 77 consecutive patients (42 men, 35 women) whose mean age was 34 (range 16-46) years. Discography was more sensitive than plain radiography in the diagnosis of disc degeneration was more common in men than in women (Chi square test, chi 2 = 9.

A double-blind prospective parallel group study comparing slow-release flurbiprofen with placebo in the control of ectopic bone formation was carried out in 68 patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty. Eight weeks after surgery there was evidence, significant at the 1% level, that the incidence and extent of periarticular calcification was lower in the flurbiprofen group. At an early phase, serum calcium level decreased and after 8 weeks serum alkaline phosphatase level increased more in the placebo group than in the flurbiprofen group, indicating an effect of flurbiprofen on bone mineral metabolism.

We studied the immunocytology of synovial fluid in purulent endoprosthetic infections using cell subtype-specific monoclonal antibodies in avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex staining. Two thirds of the monocytes were CD15-positive, whereas CD2-positive T lymphocytes only formed one third of all the mononuclear cells. The synovial fluid monocyte-activated T-cell ratio differed from findings in sterile inflammatory, reactive and rheumatoid arthritis.
