The prevalence of childhood obesity is increasing worldwide, along with the associated common comorbidities of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in later life. Motivated by evidence for a strong genetic component, our prior genome-wide association study (GWAS) efforts for childhood obesity revealed 19 independent signals for the trait; however, the mechanism of action of these loci remains to be elucidated. Introduction: Vascular injury during acetabular screw fixation is a life-threatening complication of total hip arthroplasty. This study uses three-dimensional computed tomography to (1) measure absolute distance from the external iliac artery (EIA) to the acetabulum, (2) determine available bone stock along the EIA path, and (3) create a novel acetabular vascular risk map.

Orthopaedic surgeons encounter tattoos in surgical fields with an increasing frequency and have the choice of avoiding, disregarding, bordering, or incorporating them into the surgical incisions. This article describes the history and the personal, social, and artistic value of tattoos; the physiology of tattoos and wound healing; the principles of incision planning for optimal cosmesis; and specific considerations when encountering tattoos in the surgical field. It subsequently describes cosmetic outcomes and tattoo-specific complications after surgery and provides a decision tree to help surgeons and patients decide the best approach for individual situations.

Benign Bone Tumors of the Hand: Beyond Enchondromas.

Beyond enchondromas, the most common bone tumors of the hand, there are numerous less common benign bone tumors and mimickers with which orthopaedic and hand surgeons should be familiar. These include other benign cartilage tumors, cystic lesions, osteogenic tumors, giant cell tumor, and fibrous dysplasia. Particularly unique lesions include bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (Nora lesion), florid reactive periostitis, turret exostosis (acquired osteochondroma), giant cell reparative granuloma (solid aneurysmal bone cyst), and epidermoid cyst.

Outcomes and complications of vertebral body tethering by patient gender.

Restorative Neurostimulation Therapy Compared to Optimal Medical Management: A Randomized Evaluation (RESTORE) for the Treatment of Chronic Mechanical Low Back Pain due to Multifidus Dysfunction.

Introduction: Many interventional strategies are commonly used to treat chronic low back pain (CLBP), though few are specifically intended to target the distinct underlying pathomechanisms causing low back pain. Restorative neurostimulation has been suggested as a specific treatment for mechanical CLBP resulting from multifidus dysfunction. In this randomized controlled trial, we report outcomes from a cohort of patients with CLBP associated with multifidus dysfunction treated with restorative neurostimulation compared to those randomized to a control group receiving optimal medical management (OMM) over 1 year.

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Post-Traumatic Headache: A Systematic Review.

Purpose Of Review: To evaluate existing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies on post-traumatic headache (PTH) following traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Recent Findings: We conducted a systematic search of PubMed and Embase databases from inception to February 1, 2024. Eligible fMRI studies were required to include adult participants diagnosed with acute or persistent PTH post-TBI in accordance with any edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders.

Sarcoma (SARC), a diverse group of stromal tumors arising from mesenchymal tissues, is often associated with a poor prognosis. Emerging evidence indicates that senescent cells within the tumor microenvironment (TME) significantly contribute to cancer progression and metastasis. Although the influence of senescence on SARC has been partially acknowledged, it has yet to be fully elucidated.

Comparison of anterior and posterior approaches for the treatment of cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament: a meta-analysis of 28 cohort studies.

At present, the choice of approach for the surgical treatment of cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) remains controversial. We performed this meta-analysis to compare the efficacy of the anterior and posterior approaches in the treatment of cervical OPLL. PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched for all eligible articles as of August 3, 2023, without any publication date restrictions.

Scapho-metacarpal dual mobility prosthesis for TMC-1 joint salvage: technical insights.

Introduction: Rhizarthrosis, or osteoarthritis of the trapeziometacarpal joint, predominantly affects women over 50, with up to 30% experiencing some degree of arthritis in this joint. Traditional surgical approaches, such as trapeziectomy with ligament reconstruction, can result in some patients in persistent pain or limited functionality. Purpose Of The Study: Rhizarthrosis-osteoarthritis of the thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint is usually a primary idiopathic disease. Total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is one of the surgical treatment options for symptomatic advanced thumb CMC arthritis. This retrospective study aims to evaluate the mid-term functional and radiological results of TJA with the minimum follow-up period of 3 years after the surgery.

The single antegrade sling graft: a novel hamstring autograft technique for combined anterior cruciate ligament and anterolateral ligament reconstruction.

Introduction: As a result of increased incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in young athletes, there is a rise in the indications surgical ACL reconstruction procedures. The value of anterolateral ligament (ALL) reconstruction emerges as a proposed solution to prevent graft failures and improve stability in this high demanding category of patients. The purpose of this study is to present our experience with a novel hamstring auto-grafting technique, the single antegrade sling graft (SASG), for combined reconstruction of both ACL and ALL using autologous gracilis (GR) and semitendinosus (ST) grafts utilizing a single femoral tunnel and double tibial tunnels.

Clinical consequence of the 4-week X-ray control after ESIN osteosynthesis of forearm fractures in children.

Purpose: The absence of evidence based general guidelines for radiographic follow-ups of pediatric diaphyseal forearm fractures treated with ESIN results in an arbitrary array of X-ray examinations. In most pediatric traumatology departments, an X-ray check is carried out 4 weeks after ESIN osteosynthesis of forearm shaft fractures to detect incipient consolidation of the fracture. However, the elevated sensitivity to ionizing radiation requires special precautions in the pediatric populations.

The role of paraspinal muscle degeneration in cervical spondylosis.

Purpose: To explore the relationship between paraspinal muscle degeneration and cervical spondylosis through cervical spine MRI and lateral X-ray.

Methods: A retrospective study included 83 cervical spondylosis patients as the experimental group, consisting of 28 axial joint pain (Group A), 29 cervical radiculopathy (Group B), and 26 myelopathy (Group C), as well as 29 healthy individuals as the control group (Group D). The cross-sectional area (CSA) of paraspinal muscles at the C3-4, C4-5, and C5-6 segments was measured, including the deep extensor area (DEA), deep flexor area (DFA), and superficial extensor area (SEA).

Purpose: The effect of skeletal muscle mass of the trunk and extremities on sagittal imbalance of the spine before and after surgery for adult spinal deformity (ASD) has not been elucidated. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between reduced skeletal muscle mass of the trunk and extremities, as well as spinopelvic parameters, preoperatively, postoperatively and at least 2 years after surgery for ASD.

Methods: This retrospective observational study included 140 consecutive patients who had undergone surgery for ASD and were followed-up for at least 2 years and whose skeletal muscle mass could be measured preoperatively using whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

Age-specific effects of a sustained cognitive activity on perceived cognitive fatigue as well as single- and dual-task treadmill walking performance.

During their daily lives humans are often confronted with sustained cognitive activities (SCA) leading to state fatigue, a psychobiological state characterized by a decrease in cognitive and/or motor performance and/or an increase in perception of fatigue. It was recently shown that performing SCA can impair overground dual-task gait performance in older adults, but it is currently unknown whether there is a task- and/or age-specific modulation in gait performance during treadmill walking. Therefore, the effect of a SCA on single- and dual-task treadmill walking performance was investigated in young and old adults.
