The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum metabolomic biomarkers and brain in vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) biomarkers in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) as well as to investigate compound concentration changes by comparing the results with healthy control subjects. Univariate statistical analysis of the serum showed significant differences in the levels of phenylalanine, tyrosine, lysine, glutamine, glutamate, acetone, acetate, 3-hydroxybutyrate, and 1-monoacylglycerol (1-MAG) between the PD patient group and the control group. Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis showed significantly different compound concentrations of acetate, 3-hydroxybutyrate, glutamine, tyrosine, 1-MAG and testosterone.

The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Chapter of the Association of Polish Surgeons (Polish acronym: SCMiB TCHP) is a Polish specialist scientific society representing bariatric surgeons as well as specialists from other disciplines and professions cooperating with them during the provision of services in the field of bariatric and metabolic surgery, as well as the entire care process before and after surgery. The following standards constitute the minimum requirements set by the SCMiB TCHP for good practice of the basic process of bariatric care throughout its entire period, which ensure satisfactory safety and effectiveness of the obesity treatment and its metabolic complications.

Background: In 2008, the Movement Disorders Society (MDS) published a new Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) as the official benchmark scale for Parkinson's Disease (PD). We have translated and validated the Polish version of the MDS-UPDRS, explored its dimensionality, and compared it to the original English one.
Methods: The MDS-UPDRS was translated into Polish by a team of Polish investigators led by JS and GO.

Background: The aim of the study was to assess changes in body composition in patients subjected to laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG).
Methods: Changes in body composition following LSG were determined in a group of 155 patients with obesity (117 women and 38 men), with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Whole body fat mass (FM) and lean body mass (LBM) were determined, and abdominal fat mass (AbdF) was assessed within the region extending from the top of the pubic bone up to the line between 12th thoracic and 1st lumbar vertebras.

We aimed at verifying the usefulness of shear wave elastography in determining the temporomandibular disc stiffness in patients with a temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). The study included 37 patients with confirmed TMDs and 208 healthy volunteers. Patients presented with significantly greater stiffness of the intermediate zone of the disc (region of interest [ROI] 1) and significantly lower stiffness of its anteriorly displaced portion (ROI 3).

Introduction: Interaction between obesity and genetic factors involved in the regulatory pathways of glucose homeostasis may play a significant role in diabetes development in the obese. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between the TCF7L2 rs7903146 polymorphism, adiponectin levels, age at onset of obesity and the occurrence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in a sample of obese Polish adults.
Material And Methods: A total of 474 unrelated obese subjects were included in this study.

Objectives: To verify whether elastographically determined remodeling of venous obliterating material formed during sclerotherapy is influenced by patient-specific factors.
Methods: The study included 60 patients who underwent sclerotherapy for venous insufficiency. Elastographic parameters of obliterating material, including relative vascular cross sections (percent) with the highest (red), intermediate (green), and lowest elasticity (blue), determined 7 ± 1, 14 ± 2, and 21 ± 2 days after sclerotherapy, were analyzed against the patients' ages, sexes, physical activity levels, and pain severities.

Anterior abdominal wall reconstruction surgery in patients who have undergone multiple laparotomies is associated with a high risk of complications. For this reason, minimally invasive surgery techniques are used to avoid abdominal compartment syndrome, to enhance wound healing and to reduce postoperative pain and blood loss. This paper presents a case of a patient who was admitted to the Department of General Surgery in Puck Hospital as a result of extensive anterior abdominal wall deformation with an end descending colostomy.

Background: Patients who are slated for bariatric surgery vary in terms of their age at onset of obesity, duration of obesity, and their health complications. Therefore, we aimed to explore a relationship between the age at onset of obesity, metabolic parameters, and health problems in bariatric surgery candidates.
Methods: A total of 469 unrelated adults with obesity prior to bariatric surgery were included in this study.

Background: Obesity is recognized as a major health problem. Vitamin D is involved in maintaining energy metabolism by regulation of glucose transporters, uncoupling proteins, and normal brain function. We aimed to explore a relationship between impulsivity, eating behaviors, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration in a sample of 322 bariatric surgery candidates.

Despite the growing experience of bariatric surgeons in performing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, the number of complications involving staple line leaks remains constant. Hence a solution to avoid such complications is still sought. A defect of the staple line may be the consequence of an inappropriate choice of staple size in relation to gastric wall thickness.

The amino acid L-citrulline (CIT) is safely used from the neonatal period onwards in those with urea cycle defects and carbamyl phosphate synthetase or ornithine transcarbamylase deficiencies, but several lines of enquiry indicate that it might have a much wider therapeutic role. When protein intake is low and there is a catabolic state, endogenous arginine (ARG) synthesis cannot fully be met and its supplementation can prove challenging, particularly in patients with critical and multisystem illness. Supplementary CIT could constitute a safer but still focused means of delivering ARG to endothelial and immune cells as CIT is efficiently recycled into these cells and as kidneys can convert CIT into ARG.

The properties of butyric acid, and the role it plays in the gastrointestinal tract, have been known for many years. However, the newest research shows that butyric acid still remains a molecule with a potential that has not as yet been fully exploited. The article provides an outline of relevant up-to-date knowledge about butyric acid, and presents the expert position on the clinical benefits of using butyric acid products in the therapy of gastrointestinal diseases.

Malformations of the rectum and urinary tract frequently coexist, and the prevalence of urogenital defects in patients with a rectal defect ranges from 20 to 54%. In most patients, anorectal malformations are diagnosed and treated surgically in early childhood. In this report, we present a case of a 52-year-old male with a history of urological operations in infancy due to a congenital urethral malformation and multiple recurrent episodes of perineal abscesses with urinary retention.

Background: Whether there is any benefit derived from adding oxaliplatin to fluoropyrimidine-based preoperative chemoradiation is currently unknown in cases of advanced cT3 or cT4 tumours. Our aim was to evaluate this issue by analysing a randomized trial, which compared two schedules of preoperative treatment (chemoradiation vs. 5 × 5 Gy with 3 cycles of consolidation chemotherapy) for cT4 or fixed cT3 rectal cancer.

Hypertension is a multifactorial disease caused by environmental, metabolic and genetic factors, but little is currently known on the complex interplay between these factors and blood pressure. The aim of the present study was to assess the potential impact of obesity, and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) I/D polymorphism and endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene (NOS3) 4a/4b, G894T and -T786C variants on the essential hypertension. The study group consisted of 1,027 Caucasian adults of Polish nationality (45.

The objective of this study was to determine if device implantation alone (placebo effect) contributes to the long-term metabolic benefits of DIAMOND(®) meal-mediated gastric electrical stimulation in patients with type 2 diabetes. The study was a 48 week randomized, blinded, cross-over trial in university centers comparing glycemic improvement of DIAMOND(®) implanted patients with type 2 diabetic with no activation of the electrical stimulation (placebo) versus meal-mediated activation of the electrical signal.
