The prevention of postoperative recurrence after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) relies on targeting specific pathological mechanisms according to individuals' immunological profiles. However, essential biomarkers and biological characteristics of difficult-to-treat chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) patients are not well-defined. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency and variants of the UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1) gene are the most common genetic causes of neonatal unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia (NUH). In this review, we searched PubMed for articles on the genetic causes of NUH published before December 31, 2022, and analyzed the data. On the basis of the results, we reached eight conclusions: (1) 37 mutations of the G6PD gene are associated with NUH; (2) the clinical manifestation of G6PD deficiency depends not only on ethnicity but also on the molecular mechanisms underlying the deficiency (and thus its severity); (3) of mutations in the UGT1A1 gene, homozygous c.

Background: Pathological fracture of the humerus causes severe pain, limited use of the hand, and decreased quality of life. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of intramedullary nailing and locking plate in treating metastatic pathological fractures of the proximal humerus.
Methods: This retrospective comparison study included 45 patients (22 male, 23 female) with proximal humerus metastatic pathological fractures who underwent surgical treatment between 2011 and 2022.

A method to build sequence-restricted DNA dumbbells was developed. 5'-exonuclease converts end sequences of DNA targets into sticky ends. Self-looping oligonucleotides with complementary 3'-overhangs are ligated to form dumbbells by DNA polymerase and ligase in a sequence-restricted manner.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression may be evoked through dysregulated mitochondrial dynamics enhanced oxidative stress and inflammation contributing to high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Previous study has demonstrated sodium thiosulfate (STS, Na2S2O3) could effectively attenuate renal oxidative injury in the animal model of renovascular hypertension. We explored whether the potentially therapeutic effect of STS is available on the attenuating CKD injury in thirty-six male Wistar rats with 5/6 nephrectomy.

Endometrial cancer (EC) has become one of rapidly increasing women's cancers, contributing to the most common cancer of the female genital tract in high- and middle-incomed countries, including Taiwan. In general, EC is believed its favorable outcome; however, high-grade endometrial cancers have a tendency to recur and also have a high risk to be presented as an advanced stage or accompanied with metastatic lesions, which result in a biggest therapeutic challenge. The standard therapy includes complete staging surgery (sentinel node sampling)/optimal debulking surgery, and subsequent adjuvant therapy, by either radiotherapy locally or systemic therapy as chemotherapy or targeted therapy, or in combination or in subsequential strategy is made based on the risk stratification using clinicopathological prognostic factors.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is characterized by inability of faulty pancreatic β-cells to secret a normal amount of insulin to maintain normal body consumption, and/or peripheral tissue has a decreased susceptibility to insulin, resulting in hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. Similar to other chronic systemic inflammatory diseases, DM is a result from dysregulated interactions between ethnic, genetic, epigenetic, immunoregulatory, hormonal, and environmental factors. Therefore, it is rational to suppose the concept as "To do one and to get more", while using antidiabetic agents (ADA), a main pharmacologic agent for the treatment of DM, can provide an extraglycemia effect on comorbidities or concomittent comorbidities to DM.
