Article Synopsis
  • The study shows that Lewis acids can effectively promote the reaction of 1,3-bis(silyl)propenes with aldehydes.
  • This method produces (E)-1,3-dienes with high stereoselectivity and yields that are generally good to excellent.
  • The process is noted for being mild, does not require a base, and is easy to perform.

The mechanism of alkene epoxidation by chromium(v) oxo salen complexes has been studied by DFT and experimental methods. The reaction is compared to the closely related Mn-catalyzed process in an attempt to understand the dramatic difference in selectivity between the two systems. Overall, the studies show that the reactions have many similarities, but also a few critical differences.
