The article describes a study that tested a midrange model of caregiver stress mediation in women caring for a family member with Alzheimer's disease. The study was grounded in the nursing theory of modeling and role modeling and tested two hypotheses based on theoretically derived propositions. A convenience sample of 88 female caregivers participating in a larger study completed measures of perceived stress, hope, and well-being.

Developmentally advanced EEG alpha power in gifted male and female adolescents.

An electroencephalographic (EEG) study of gifted and average ability male and female adolescents, as well as college students of both sexes, was conducted to investigate further the relative contributions the left and right cerebral hemispheres during an eyes open (baseline) task in all groups. A total of 90 subjects had baseline EEG recorded in three groups with equal numbers of males and females: 30 gifted adolescents, 30 average ability adolescents, and 30 college-age subjects. Overall alpha power (8-12 Hz resting potential) was significantly greater in average ability subjects compared to both college-age subjects.

Culturally competent assessment practice in the United States.

Assessment practice with multicultural populations in the United States requires cultural competence. Culturally competent assessment includes culture-specific styles of service delivery, use of the client's first language, and an evaluation of the client as a cultural being prior to test administration using cultural orientation categories. This information is essential for understanding health/illness beliefs, to indicate the possible presence of culture-specific symptoms, and to select standard or culture-specific tests.

Stress mediation in caregivers of cognitively impaired adults: theoretical model testing.

The purpose of the study was to test a midrange model of caregiver stress mediation based on Modeling and Role-Modeling theory. Perceived support and self-worth were examined to determine if these self-care resources had a mediating effect between stress and well-being in caregivers of cognitively impaired adults. The sample of 117 caregivers completed measures of basic need status, perceived support, self-worth, stress, and well-being.

Alteration of gonococcal protein expression in acidic culture.

We grew Neisseria gonorrhoeae under acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions and noted altered expression of at least 12 outer membrane proteins between 31 and 100 kDa in size. One protein whose expression was upregulated under acidic conditions was gonococcal heat shock protein 63. These proteins may contribute to the pathogenesis of gonorrhea in the urogenital tract.

Validity studies of the filial anxiety scale.

Factor analytic and construct validity studies were conducted to explore the validity of Cicirelli's (1988) 13-item Filial Anxiety Scale (FAS). The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Spielberger, 1983), and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (Crowne & Marlowe, 1960), were a part of the investigation. The results offer support for the validity of the FAS subscales and the FAS' usefulness as an instrument for measuring adult children's feelings concerning elder-parent care.

Hemispheric differences for P300 amplitude from an auditory oddball task.

The P3(00) event-related potential (ERP) was elicited in 80 normal, right-handed male subjects using a simple auditory stimulus discrimination task, with electroencephalographic (EEG) activity recorded at 19 electrodes. P300 amplitude was larger over the right compared to left hemisphere electrode sites primarily at anterior-medial locations (F3/4, C3/4) for both target and standard stimuli. The N100, P200, and N200 components also demonstrated several similar, albeit less robust, hemispheric asymmetries.

Social skills training for young adolescents: cognitive and performance components.

An assertiveness training curriculum that was an expansion of two previous programs with young adolescents (Thompson, Bundy, & Broncheau, 1995; Wise, Bundy, Bundy, & Wise, 1991) was presented to 22 fifth graders. Cognitive acquisition and retention of the symbolic assertiveness information were measured with multiple-choice pre- and posttests used in the two prior programs. The performance components, including verbal (word choice) and non-verbal (body orientation, posture, and gestures) aspects of assertive behavior were measured in pretest and posttest role-play situations, with the posttest administered at two levels of motivation.

For left-compared to right-handed subjects, P3 amplitude was larger at anterior electrode sites for the target stimuli and larger overall for the novel visual stimuli; P3 latency was shorter for left-compared to right-handers for the target stimuli. The N1, P2, and N2 components demonstrated similar handedness effects.

Assessing filial maturity through the use of the Filial Anxiety Scale.

This study was an investigation of a late-in-life stage of development known as filial maturity (Blenkner, 1965). The Filial Anxiety Scale (Cicirelli, 1988) was used in a cross-sectional design to assess whether the filial anxiety of adult caregivers of aging parents varied in a manner consistent with Blenkner's concept. Results clearly supported Blenkner's position that there is a late-in-life period of development during which some individuals experience heightened levels of filial anxiety, or a filial crisis, prompted by the caregiving demands of an aging parent.

Wagering on a large scale: Relationships between public gambling and game manipulations in two state lotteries.

Public wagering was examined in relation to game adjustments during the first 523 draws of Oregon's "Megabucks" lottery and the first 540 draws of Arizona's "The Pick" lottery. Oregon's lottery was modified five times during this period, and Arizona's lottery underwent four modifications. Public wagering was not related to decreases in the odds of winning in either state.

The assessment of mechanical and neuromuscular response strategies during landing.

The purpose of this study was to assess relative contributions of mechanical and neuromuscular mechanisms to control of landing. Proposed mechanical and neuromuscular response strategies were evaluated relative to lower extremity impact force attenuation. Four subjects performed three conditions of 25 landings from a 60-cm height on each of two days.

The composition of an avian foliage-gleaning guild was analyzed with respect to body size at nine sites along an elevational gradient in the Oregon Cascades. Mean body size decreased from 20.5 g near the lower forest boundary where it meets the grassland at about 775 m to 9.

Learning new response sequences.

Four rats were required to press either a right or left lever to complete various three-response sequences. After extended exposure to a training sequence, subjects were shifted to a new target sequence. The new target sequences always differed from the previous sequence by the response required in the first or last position of the sequence.

Performance of subjects in tasks involving estimation of remembered magnitude and cross-modality matching of remembered magnitude for brightness and loudness stimuli was examined in two experiments. Various theories of temporal control and schedule induction imply that periodic schedules temporally modulate an organism's motivational states within interreinforcement intervals. This speculation has been fueled by frequently observed multimodal activity distributions created by averaging across interreinforcement intervals. We tested this hypothesis by manipulating the cost associated with schedule-induced activities and the availability of other activities to determine the degree to which (a) the temporal distributions of activities within the interreinforcement interval are fixed or can be temporally displaced, (b) rats can reallocate activities across different interreinforcement intervals, and (c) noninduced activities can substitute for schedule-induced activities.

The effects of size, clutter, and complexity on vanishing-point distances in visual imagery.

The portrayal of vanishing-point distances in visual imagery was examined in six experiments. In all experiments, subjects formed visual images of squares, and the squares were to be oriented orthogonally to subjects' line of sight. The squares differed in their level of surface complexity, and were either undivided, divided into 4 equally sized smaller squares, or divided into 16 equally sized smaller squares.

Development and preliminary psychometric properties of the Transition Competence Battery for Deaf Adolescents and Young Adults.

This article describes the development and preliminary psychometric properties of the Transition Competence Battery for Deaf Adolescents and Young Adults (TCB). The TCB includes three subtests on employment and three subtests on independent living, in a 3-option multiple-choice format and with both written and videotaped instructions. The TCB was standardized on students from both mainstreamed and residential settings (n ranged from 180 to 230 for the different subtests).
