Background: The thrombolysis in myocardial infarction risk index (TRI) was developed to estimate prognosis at the initial contact of the healthcare provider in coronary artery disease patients without laboratory parameters. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship of the baseline TRI and contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

Methods: A total of 963 consecutive STEMI diagnosed patients who underwent primary percutaneous intervention were included in the study.

Background: In this study, we aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of NTG administration via catheter and local NTG infusion through a perforated balloon in order to prevent coronary spasm from developing during percutaneous intervention.

Method: The study began with 1:1 randomization into two groups of a total of 1688 patients scheduled for PCT. A total of 91 patients in the proximal group who developed lesions received 500 mcg NTG through a catheter, while 85 patients in the local group with lesions developed during the procedure received 500 mcg local NTG through a perforated balloon.

Objective: In the present study, we investigated the effectiveness and reliability of a new method that reveals whether guidewire advanced distal to the lesion is in the lumen in patients with acute (ATO) or chronic coronary total occlusion (CTO).

Methods: Forty-one patients with symptomatic ATO and 22 patients with CTO who were admitted into our catheterization laboratory between January 2016 and March 2017 were included. In patients in whom antegrade filling could not be demonstrated after passing 0.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between mean platelet volume (MPV) level and the extent of airway inflammation in allergic airway diseases and in subgroups by comparison of inflammatory markers.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective examination was made of 250 patients with allergic airway disease in the symptomatic phase, who had been newly diagnosed or who had abandoned treatment for at least 6 months. These patients were separated into 3 groups of asthma without allergic rhinitis (A - AR, n = 107), asthma with allergic rhinitis (A + AR, n = 83) and allergic rhinitis without asthma (AR - A, n = 60).

Purpose: To compare the use of topical tranexamic acid (TXA) with postoperative autologous transfusion (PAT) in terms of blood loss, need for allogeneic blood transfusion, and cost-effectiveness.

Methods: Records of 25 men and 125 women (mean age, 67 years) who underwent primary unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and were randomised to the PAT group (n=50), topical TXA group (n=50), or routine drainage group (control) [n=50] were reviewed. Pre- and post-operative haemoglobin level, total postoperative drainage volume, and the need for allogeneic blood transfusion were recorded.

Background: Levodopa is the indispensable choice of medial therapy in patients with Parkinson disease (PD). Since L-dopa treatment was shown to increase serum homocysteine levels, a well-known risk factor for cardiovascular disorders, the patients with PD under L-dopa treatment will be at increased risk for future cardiovascular events. The objective of this study is to evaluate cardiovascular risk in patients with PD under levodopa treatment.

Cases requiring increased number of repositioning maneuvers in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Braz J Otorhinolaryngol

December 2016

Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Ordu University Medical School, Ordu, Turkey.

Introduction: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a clinical syndrome that is proposed to be caused by dislocated utricular debris into semicircular canals. Although the majority of patients are treated by one or two repositioning maneuvers, some of the patients need repeated maneuvers for relief.

Objective: The goal of this study was to investigate the factors associated with patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo who required multiple repositioning procedures for treatment.

Background: One of the main operative goals achieved with tip surgery is to reach the ideal nasolabial angle. The main purpose of the current study was to compare the effects of alar cartilage vertical incision and shortening (ACS) and columellar-septal suture (CSS) techniques on the nasolabial angle.

Methods: In this retrospective study, 2 groups were examined: the patients in the first group were operated on using vertical alar cartilage incision and shortening, and the patients in the second group were operated on using columellar-septal cartilage suture.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is characterized by cyclic episodes of hypoxemia and reoxygenation. It has been suggested that OSAS is associated with chronic inflammation within the microvasculature. This low-grade inflammation may play a role in the pathophysiology of OSAS-related comorbidities.

Aim: We aimed to compare the incidence of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) between atorvastatin versus rosuvastatin in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary coronary angioplasty.

Methods: One hundred ninety-two consecutive patients, who underwent primary percutaneous intervention (p-PCI) with the diagnosis of STEMI, were included in the study. The patients were randomized to take atorvastatin 80 mg (n=98) or rosuvastatin 40 mg (n= 94) before the procedure.

Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Ordu University Medical School, Teaching and Educational Hospital, 52200, Ordu, Turkey,

Adequate disinfection level of the medical equipments should be maintained to prevent cross-contamination between patients. Otoscope specula are usually cleaned and disinfected appropriately after each use by disinfectant solutions. However, since otoscope heads are electrical instruments with irregular inner surface they may still harbor pathogenic microorganisms.

We investigated the relationship between baseline neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Consecutive patients diagnosed with STEMI (n = 691) who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention (p-PCI) were included in the study. The CIN was defined as an increase in serum creatinine concentration ≥25% over baseline at 48 hours.

Objective: Congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction can be treated with a spectrum of techniques, starting with conservative massage to more invasive dacryocystorhinostomy. There has been controversy regarding the optimal treatment procedure. We introduced a unique technique to treat congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction and analyzed its success rate and complications.
