BACKGROUND Calcaneal fractures are the most common tarsal bone fractures, and account for 75% of intra-articular fractures. The purpose of this study was to compare the biomechanical stability of the anterior process locking plate combined with the percutaneous cannulated screw fixation (screw group) versus the anterior process locking plate fixation alone (plate group) for the treatment of Sanders type II calcaneal fractures using finite element analysis to provide a theoretical basis for clinical work. MATERIAL AND METHODS We established a 3D model of Sanders type II calcaneal fracture; assigned material properties to the internal fixation systems; applied loads; set up analysis criteria; analyzed the displacement of the fracture, relative displacement, stress state of bone tissue, and internal fixation; and compared mechanical stability.

Ultrasound has been broadly used in biomedicine for both tumor diagnosis as well as therapy. The applications of recent developments in micro/nanotechnology promote the development of ultrasound-based biomedicine, especially in the field of ultrasound-based drug delivery and tumor therapy. Ultrasound can activate nano-sized drug delivery systems by different mechanisms for ultrasound- triggered on-demand drug release targeted only at the tumor sites.

Thermosensitive liposomes have demonstrated great potential for tumor-specific chemotherapy. Near infrared (NIR) dyes loaded liposomes have also shown improved photothermal effect in cancer theranostics. However, the instability of liposomes often causes premature release of drugs or dyes, impeding their antitumor efficacy.

Previous studies have indicated that the adenosine triphosphate‑sensitive homomeric P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) plays an important role and exhibits therapeutic potential in a number of brain disorders, including temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). The aim of the present study was to assess the expression of P2X7R, glutamate (GLU) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in the temporal neocortex and hippocampus of rats with lithium‑pilocarpine‑induced epilepsy as well as in patients with intractable TLE. The results demonstrated that the levels of P2X7R, GLU and GFAP were significantly upregulated in rats with spontaneous recurrent seizures, whereas they were reduced in rats that were treated with brilliant blue G (BBG), a P2X7R antagonist.

Background And Purpose: Inflammatory reaction plays a crucial role in cerebral ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury. It has been shown that activated microglia long-term existed in cerebral ischemia and induced second injury. Therefore, we hypothesize that prepared phosphatidylserine (PS)-modified microbubbles (PS-MBs) combined with ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD) can safely open the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and target activated microglia for inflammatory area in the later stage of ischemia reperfusion.

To improve the non-invasive therapeutic efficacy for ER positive breast cancer (ER+ BC), we fabricated a multifunctional FOXA1 loaded porphyrin microbubble to combine photodynamic therapy (PDT) and gene therapy of FOXA1 knockdown (KD) with ultrasound targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD) technology under the guidance of contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). Cationic porphyrin microbubbles (CpMBs) were firstly fabricated from a porphyrin grafted lipid with two cationic amino groups (PGL-NH2) and fluorocarbon inert gas of CF. Porphyrin group in the CpMBs monolayer could be used as a photosensitizer for PDT, while amino groups could adsorb siRNA through electrostatic interaction for FOXA1 KD, which could inhibit the proliferation of estrogen-dependent ER+ BC.

Introduction: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is common and more prevalent in the aged population. Surgical intervention is the treatment of choice, but its outcomes may not be satisfactory because of recurrence and physical infirmity associated with aging. Aberrant angiogenesis and localized inflammation contribute to the formation of CSDH.
