Men, testosterone and Covid-19.

Men have more severe Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) outcomes and higher mortality rates than women, and it was suggested that testosterone levels might promote severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and Covid-19 severity. However, clinical studies have not supported this theory. Studies have consistently shown that serum testosterone concentrations during acute Covid-19 in men are inversely proportional to the inflammatory cytokines and severity of illness.

Acute orchitis deciphered: Coxsackievirus B strains are the main etiology and their presence in semen is associated with acute inflammation and risk of persistent oligozoospermia.

A single, episodic event of unilateral/bilateral scrotal swelling in a group of adult boars at an Austrian boar stud.

Background: Scrotal swelling is a clinical situation which can be caused by different aetiologies. In this case report, we describe a multi-week episode of unilateral and bilateral scrotal swelling in boars at an Austrian boar stud and its diagnostic work-up.

Case Presentation: In the summer of 2020, the herd veterinarian of an Austrian boar stud reported that over a period of six weeks, five out of 70 boars presented with unilateral severe swelling of the left scrotum and three out of 70 boars with bilateral severe swelling of the left and moderate swelling of the right scrotum, respectively.

Outpatient sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment patterns in the United States: a real-world database study.

Background: Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) are the most common notifiable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States. Because symptoms of these infections often overlap with other urogenital infections, misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment can occur unless appropriate STI diagnostic testing is performed in clinical settings. The objective of this study was to describe STI diagnostic testing and antimicrobial treatment patterns and trends among adolescent and adult men and women with lower genitourinary tract symptoms (LGUTS).

Erythema nodosum leprosum: A rare cause of testicular nodules.

Erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), characterized by erythematous subcutaneous nodules with multiorgan involvement and systemic manifestations such as neuritis, arthritis, and orchitis, affects approximately 50 % of patients with lepromatous leprosy (LL). It has also been associated with testicular atrophy and adult-onset hypogonadism, but testicular nodules have rarely been reported. We present the case of a 35-year-old male patient with biopsy confirmed LL who completed multidrug therapy and presented for follow-up with a complaint of testicular tenderness.

NR2C2 of macrophages promotes inflammation via NF-κB in LPS-induced orchitis in mice.

In Brief: Bacterial infection can induce testicular inflammation and damage male fertility. This paper reveals the role of nuclear receptor subfamily 2 group C member 2 (NR2C2) in macrophage cells in orchitis caused by bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) infection.

Testicular relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Contemporary chemotherapy regimens have led to improved survival and decreased incidence of testicular relapse for pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Local therapies to the testes, such as radiotherapy and orchiectomy, are often not necessary given that high-dose chemotherapy agents can overcome the relative blood-testis barrier. However, urologists should be aware of clinical scenarios involving ALL which still warrant testicular biopsy to guide management.

Molecular Investigations of Two First Biovar 2 Infections Cases in French Dogs.

Despite biovar 2's (BSB2) active circulation in wildlife, no canine infections have been reported. The present paper is the first to describe two cases of BSB2 infections in French dogs. The first case occurred in 2020 and concerned a 13-year-old male neutered Border Collie with clinical signs of prostatitis.

Increased risk of brucellosis misdiagnosis in regions that lose their endemicity.

Over the last decades, the epidemiology of human brucellosis globally has been subjected to significant changes, with the eradication of many existing endemic hot spots. This paper describes three cases with initial misdiagnosis of brucellosis that were managed during 2011-2017 in Republic of North Macedonia, country that until recently has been declared as endemic region. In spite of the fever, constitutional symptoms, focal disease (spondylitis, pneumonia and orchitis) and previous contact with domestic animals, brucellosis was not initially recognized, and patients were inadequately managed.

A rare presentation of visceral leishmaniasis and epididymo-orchitis in a patient with chronic granulomatous disease.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has rarely been reported in patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), despite the fact that they seem more susceptible to intracellular infection. Emphysematous Epididymo-Orchitis: A Rare Case Report.

Macrophage-Related Testicular Inflammation in Individuals with Idiopathic Non-Obstructive Azoospermia: A Single-Cell Analysis.

Male infertility is a global issue that seriously affects reproductive health. This study aimed to understand the underlying causes of idiopathic non-obstructive azoospermia (iNOA), which is a type of male infertility with unknown origins that accounts for 10-15% of cases. By using single-cell analysis techniques, we aimed to uncover the mechanisms of iNOA and gain insight into the cellular and molecular changes in the testicular environment.

Functional Imaging of Testicular Torsion.

This article discusses the current clinical role and scope of functional radionuclide imaging using testicular perfusion scintigraphy with Tc-pertechnetate in patients presenting with an acute hemiscrotum for an early and reliable diagnosis of testicular torsion. The technique of testicular perfusion scintigraphy is described, and the characteristic findings are detailed with examples. The imaging characteristics of the various phases of testicular torsion and its differentiation from epididymitis and/or epididymo-orchitis and the other related conditions presenting as an acute hemiscrotum are detailed.
