Men have more severe Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) outcomes and higher mortality rates than women, and it was suggested that testosterone levels might promote severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and Covid-19 severity. However, clinical studies have not supported this theory. Studies have consistently shown that serum testosterone concentrations during acute Covid-19 in men are inversely proportional to the inflammatory cytokines and severity of illness.

Although various viruses are considered to be the clinical cause for acute orchitis, it is completely unclear to what extent and which viruses are etiologically involved in acute orchitis and what the clinic and course of these patients are like. Therefore, a prospective study was set up to decipher acute isolated orchitis. Between July 2007 and February 2023, a total of 26 patients with isolated orchitis were recruited and compared with 530 patients with acute epididymitis.

Purpose: Acute epididymo-orchitis (AEO) is a common urological condition characterised by pain and swelling of the epididymis which can affect men of any age. The aetiology and to some extent the management of the patient differ between paediatric and young and older adult groups.
Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed at the University Hospital Limerick from 2012 to 2016.

Purpose: Sexual dysfunction after inguinal hernia complication is considered rare. However, its consequences impact on quality of life inevitably. Laparoscopic and open inguinal hernia repair may be comparable in terms of recurrent rate, overall complications, and chronic pain.

Background: Scrotal swelling is a clinical situation which can be caused by different aetiologies. In this case report, we describe a multi-week episode of unilateral and bilateral scrotal swelling in boars at an Austrian boar stud and its diagnostic work-up.
Case Presentation: In the summer of 2020, the herd veterinarian of an Austrian boar stud reported that over a period of six weeks, five out of 70 boars presented with unilateral severe swelling of the left scrotum and three out of 70 boars with bilateral severe swelling of the left and moderate swelling of the right scrotum, respectively.

Background: Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) are the most common notifiable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States. Because symptoms of these infections often overlap with other urogenital infections, misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment can occur unless appropriate STI diagnostic testing is performed in clinical settings. The objective of this study was to describe STI diagnostic testing and antimicrobial treatment patterns and trends among adolescent and adult men and women with lower genitourinary tract symptoms (LGUTS).

Erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), characterized by erythematous subcutaneous nodules with multiorgan involvement and systemic manifestations such as neuritis, arthritis, and orchitis, affects approximately 50 % of patients with lepromatous leprosy (LL). It has also been associated with testicular atrophy and adult-onset hypogonadism, but testicular nodules have rarely been reported. We present the case of a 35-year-old male patient with biopsy confirmed LL who completed multidrug therapy and presented for follow-up with a complaint of testicular tenderness.

In Brief: Bacterial infection can induce testicular inflammation and damage male fertility. This paper reveals the role of nuclear receptor subfamily 2 group C member 2 (NR2C2) in macrophage cells in orchitis caused by bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) infection.
Abstract: Bacterial infection and induced inflammation are important causes of male infertility.

Contemporary chemotherapy regimens have led to improved survival and decreased incidence of testicular relapse for pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Local therapies to the testes, such as radiotherapy and orchiectomy, are often not necessary given that high-dose chemotherapy agents can overcome the relative blood-testis barrier. However, urologists should be aware of clinical scenarios involving ALL which still warrant testicular biopsy to guide management.

Chronic asymptomatic idiopathic orchitis (CAO) is an important but neglected cause of acquired infertility due to non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) in male dogs. The similarity of the pathophysiology in infertile dogs and men supports the dog's suitability as a possible animal model for studying human diseases causing disruption of spermatogenesis and evaluating the role of spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) as a new therapeutic approach to restore or recover fertility in cases of CAO. To investigate the survival of resilient stem cells, the expression of the protein gene product (PGP9.

Despite biovar 2's (BSB2) active circulation in wildlife, no canine infections have been reported. The present paper is the first to describe two cases of BSB2 infections in French dogs. The first case occurred in 2020 and concerned a 13-year-old male neutered Border Collie with clinical signs of prostatitis.

Over the last decades, the epidemiology of human brucellosis globally has been subjected to significant changes, with the eradication of many existing endemic hot spots. This paper describes three cases with initial misdiagnosis of brucellosis that were managed during 2011-2017 in Republic of North Macedonia, country that until recently has been declared as endemic region. In spite of the fever, constitutional symptoms, focal disease (spondylitis, pneumonia and orchitis) and previous contact with domestic animals, brucellosis was not initially recognized, and patients were inadequately managed.

Introduction: Epididymo-orchitis (EO) is a common urological condition. In endemic areas, EO may be the presenting picture of brucellosis. Early suspicion and proper diagnosis is necessary for patient recovery.

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are now being used in a number of dermato-oncological indications. In particular, the approval for adjuvant therapy of high-risk stage IIB/C and III melanoma means that more patients of fertile age receive ICI.
Objectives: This raises the question of how ICIs affect male and female fertility and whether they are teratogenic.

An increased number of patients with syphilis was recently reported in Japan and the United States. Syphilitic orchitis, a late complication of syphilis, is a rare disease that presents as testicular swelling. In most cases, a diagnostic orchiectomy is performed because of the possibility of testicular cancer.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has rarely been reported in patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), despite the fact that they seem more susceptible to intracellular infection. We describe a rare presentation of VL and epididymo-orchitis in a patient with CGD, which has not been seen previously in the literature following inflammatory syndrome.

Emphysematous epididymo-orchitis is a rare and potentially fatal infection marked by the presence of gas in the epididymis and testicular tissue. Here, we describe the case of a 49-year-old male with a known past medical history of diabetes and hypertension who presented with right inguinoscrotal swelling and severe tenderness. An urgent scrotal ultrasound was obtained and revealed a fluid-filled avascular mass.

Emphysematous epididymo-orchitis (EEO) is a rare but serious condition that involves the presence of gas within the tissues of the testicle and/or the epididymis. It is a medical emergency that can be life-threatening if left untreated. Management of this condition may involve a combination of antibiotics, surgical drainage, and supportive care.

Male infertility is a global issue that seriously affects reproductive health. This study aimed to understand the underlying causes of idiopathic non-obstructive azoospermia (iNOA), which is a type of male infertility with unknown origins that accounts for 10-15% of cases. By using single-cell analysis techniques, we aimed to uncover the mechanisms of iNOA and gain insight into the cellular and molecular changes in the testicular environment.

This article discusses the current clinical role and scope of functional radionuclide imaging using testicular perfusion scintigraphy with Tc-pertechnetate in patients presenting with an acute hemiscrotum for an early and reliable diagnosis of testicular torsion. The technique of testicular perfusion scintigraphy is described, and the characteristic findings are detailed with examples. The imaging characteristics of the various phases of testicular torsion and its differentiation from epididymitis and/or epididymo-orchitis and the other related conditions presenting as an acute hemiscrotum are detailed.
