Background: Black men residing in Western countries are more likely to develop prostate cancer (PCa), have higher mortality and are younger than the general population at initial diagnosis. In addition to genetic and environmental factors, the reasons for these racial disparities can also be attributed to social determinants of health such as low health literacy of this population and poor awareness of health services. Little is known about laboratory tests for PCa in black men.

Clinical and Molecular Traits of a Novel SPECC1L-ALK Fusion in a Patient with Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

J Pers Med

June 2024

Laboratory of Oncology, Fondazione IRCCS Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, 71013 San Giovanni Rotondo, FG, Italy.

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) fusions account for 5-7% of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, the therapeutic approaches for which have significantly evolved in the last few years. However, the response to target therapies remains heterogeneous, partially due to the many different ALK fusion variants reported to date. Rare fusion variants have also been discovered, but their role in influencing responses to ALK inhibitors (ALKis) remains poorly elucidated.

Current guidelines recommend radical nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff excision as the standard surgical treatment for high-risk upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). While large evidence is available regarding open and laparoscopic nephroureterectomy, data focusing on robotic nephroureterectomy (RNU) in UTUC are mostly limited with mixed results, especially in locally advanced disease. In light of the recent introduction of new robotic platforms, it is of utmost importance to further investigate oncologic outcomes associated with RNU.
