Understanding Minimally Invasive Gynaecologic Surgery Fellowship Training in Canada: A National Survey of Recent Graduates.

Objective: To characterize fellowship training experiences in the 11 Canadian minimally invasive gynaecologic surgery (MIGS) programs and compare the surgical exposure of fellows in these programs to that of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) accredited fellowship in MIGS (FMIGS).

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 2017 and 2018 MIGS fellowship graduates across Canada were given a web-based survey via SurveyMonkey software to evaluate 5 key components of postgraduate fellowship curricula: 1) surgical exposure; 2) teaching and evaluation methods; 3) research experience; 4) clinical responsibilities; and 5) pursuit of other academic endeavours. Interest in creating a national standardized curriculum and seeking accreditation for MIGS fellowships were also examined.

Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma: A Synthesis on Updated Guidelines for the Primary Care Perspective.

Description Cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) is a condition wherein malignant cells form in the melanocytic cells. CMM is a potentially lethal form of skin cancer, commonly found in sun-exposed areas of the body. Image-Guided Hypofractionated Proton Therapy in Early-Stage Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Phase 2 Study.

Purpose: Due to the excellent outcomes with image-guided stereotactic body radiotherapy for patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and the low treatment-related toxicities using proton therapy (PT), we investigated treatment outcomes and toxicities when delivering hypofractionated PT.

Materials And Methods: Between 2009 and 2018, 22 patients with T1 to T2 N0M0 NSCLC (45% T1, 55% T2) received image-guided hypofractionated PT. The median age at diagnosis was 72 years (range, 58-90).

Informing Strategy to Ensure Detection: Perceptions of Coronavirus Testing in a Southeastern U.S. Urban Homeless Population.

Introduction: Attitudes of those in the homeless population toward testing, particularly during a pandemic, are critical to understand, so that they and their communities may be safely triaged and protected. Homeless persons are more likely to be exposed during viral epidemics, and have greater vulnerability for more severe viral illness, due to greater medical comorbidities. The literature reflects a dearth of published papers describing the perceptions, interest, and motivations of homeless people to seek or receive viral testing, despite their status as a high-risk population.

Tuberculosis-associated HLH in a patient with chronic kidney disease on haemodialysis.

Haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare immunological disorder that is accompanied by a high mortality rate when the underlying aetiology is miliary tuberculosis. We report a case of tuberculosis (TB)-associated HLH in a haemodialysis patient, from a TB-endemic region, who missed two sessions of dialysis before developing the primary symptoms of HLH. The patient presented with non-specific findings including pancytopenia, coagulopathy and transaminitis.

Postoperative Retroperitoneal Hematoma: A Case of Saw Palmetto and the Importance of Primary Care Intervention.

Introduction: A middle-aged male with a history of bilateral inguinal hernia repair was admitted for acute abdominal pain. The patient reported that he took prescribed hydrocodone and a saw palmetto supplement prior to surgery. He denied any recent trauma after the procedure, and he was unable to schedule a follow-up appointment with the surgeon or the primary care physician.

Background: Simulation is beneficial in achieving competence and success in the performance of procedures. Unfortunately, costs associated with purchasing simulation equipment is a significant barrier to implement this training. Alcohol and multiple sclerosis: an immune system-based review.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS). Although the exact etiology of multiple sclerosis is unknown, researchers suggest that genetic, environmental, and microbial factors play a central role in causing multiple sclerosis. Pathology of multiple sclerosis is based on inflammation as T cells enter the brain via disruptions in the blood-brain barrier, recognizing myelin as foreign antigen; and as a result, the T cells attack myelin and start the inflammatory processes, enhancing inflammatory cytokines and antibodies.

Introduction: Pericardial effusion and tamponade are accounted as the two most important complications following open-heart surgeries which are known to increase mortality and morbidity rates. Putting a low negative pressure suction on the chest tube of patients might be a useful way for better drainage and also reducing the occurrence of pericardial effusion and tamponade. In the present study, we aimed to compare the prevalence of pericardial effusion and tamponade in patients undergoing open-heart surgeries with and without low negative pressure suction on the chest tube.

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is a rare presentation of thyrotoxicosis where the patient develops a transient motor deficit secondary to acute hypokalemia. The thyroid hormone augments gene transcription and post-transcriptional modification of Na-K ATPase, a cell membrane protein that regulates the electrical potential of the cell. Na-K ATPase increases active transport of potassium (K+) ions into the intracellular compartment causing hypokalemia without total body potassium deficit.

An adult trauma center identified pain management as a potential area for improvement. Pain management is at the height of discussion in medical centers across the United States. The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Provider and System (HCAHPS) scores relating to pain management were consistently low (<5th percentile).

Comparison of racial distribution of photodermatoses in USA academic dermatology clinics: A multicenter retrospective analysis of 1080 patients over a 10-year period.

Background: Previous studies at single academic institutions have identified variations in the prevalence of photodermatoses among racial groups. The purpose of the study was to compare the distribution of photodermatoses between Whites and Blacks at four academic medical centers in the USA.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed at four institutions' general dermatology clinics using diagnoses consistent with the International Classification of Disease (ICD), Ninth and Tenth Revisions, codes related to photodermatoses between August 2006 and August 2016.
