We sought to determine racial and ethnic differences in perceptions (quality of communication, expectations, and concerns) of germline or somatic DNA sequencing (genomic profiling). Patients with prostate, urothelial, or kidney cancer were surveyed using a questionnaire that assessed previous experience, beliefs, expectations, and concerns regarding genomic profiling. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were used to identify factors associated with patients' perceptions of genomic profiling.

Background: We explored changes in perceptions of cure among patients with genitourinary (GU) cancers starting Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) therapy.

Materials And Methods: This longitudinal study assessed patients before starting therapy and 3-months later with a questionnaire that included patient perceptions of ICIs and the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Anxiety scale. General linear modeling was used to investigate changes in expectation of cure over time, and chi-square tests were used to determine the association between expectation of cure and perceptions of ICIs and anxiety.

Purpose: Eligibility criteria illustrate the characteristics of the study population and promote the safety of participants. However, overreliance on restrictive eligibility criteria may limit the generalizability of outcomes. As a result, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and Friends of Cancer Research (Friends) issued statements to curtail these challenges.

Importance: Prior studies have suggested that participation in home-based cardiac rehabilitation (HBCR) vs center-based cardiac rehabilitation (CBCR) results in similar clinical outcomes in patients with low to moderate risk; however, outcome data from demographically diverse populations and patients who are medically complex are lacking.

Objective: To compare hospitalizations, medication adherence, and cardiovascular risk factor control between participants in HBCR vs CBCR.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This retrospective cohort study was conducted among patients in Kaiser Permanente Southern California (KPSC), an integrated health care system serving approximately 4.

Objective: This study aimed to examine whether severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection during pregnancy is associated with increased odds of perinatal complications and viral transmission to the infant.

Study Design: A retrospective cohort study of women who delivered at Kaiser Permanente Southern California hospitals (April 6, 2020-February 28, 2021) was performed using data extracted from electronic health records (EHRs). During this time polymerize chain reaction (PCR)-based tests for SARS-CoV-2 was universally offered to all pregnant women at labor and delivery admission, as well as earlier in the pregnancy, if they were displaying symptoms consistent with SARS-CoV-2 infection or a possible exposure to the virus.

Introduction: Peyronie's disease (PD) is an acquired wound-healing disorder of the penis involving fibrosis and scar formation within the tunica albuginea that can lead to various penile deformities resulting in penile pain, sexual dysfunction, low self-esteem, and emotional distress. While many studies highlight the psychosocial impact of PD on the patient, little is known about the female partner's experience regarding PD and its management.

Objectives: To evaluate and summarize the available clinical data on the effects of the disease and its management on female sexual partners of patients with PD.

Is Anesthesia Technique Associated With a Higher Risk of Mortality or Complications Within 90 Days of Surgery for Geriatric Patients With Hip Fractures?

Clin Orthop Relat Res

June 2018

V. Desai, D. Diaz, E. Chung, C. Qiu, Department of Anesthesiology, Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center, Baldwin Park, CA, USA P. H. Chan, H. A. Prentice, B. H. Fasig, Surgical Outcomes & Analysis, Kaiser Permanente, San Diego, CA, USA G. L. Zohman, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Kaiser Permanente Orange County Medical Center, Orange, CA, USA G. R. Diekmann, G. B. Maletis, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center, Baldwin Park, CA, USA C. Qiu, Department of Anesthesia, University of California, Irvine Medical Center, Orange, CA, USA.

Background: Postoperative mortality and complications after geriatric hip fracture surgery remain high despite efforts to improve perioperative care for these patients. One factor of particular interest is anesthetic technique, but prior studies on this are limited by sample selection, competing risks, and incomplete followup.

Questions/purposes: (1) Among older patients undergoing surgery for hip fracture, does 90-day mortality differ depending on the type of anesthesia received? (2) Do 90-day emergency department returns and hospital readmissions differ based on anesthetic technique after geriatric hip fracture repairs? (3) Do 90-day Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) outcomes differ according to anesthetic techniques used during hip fracture surgery?

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study on geriatric patients (65 years or older) with hip fractures between 2009 and 2014 using the Kaiser Permanente Hip Fracture Registry.

By ignoring the root causes of disease and neglecting to prioritize lifestyle measures for prevention, the medical community is placing people at harm. Advanced nations, influenced by a Western lifestyle, are in the midst of a health crisis, resulting largely from poor lifestyle choices. Epidemiologic, ecologic, and interventional studies have repeatedly indicated that most chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes, are the result of lifestyles fueled by poor nutrition and physical inactivity.

Background: A notable gap in the evidence base for outpatient palliative care (PC) for cancer is that most trials were conducted in specialized oncology or academic centers with limited translation and further evaluation in "real-world" settings. Health systems are desperate for guidance regarding the most effective and sustainable PC service models.

Objective: Describe the study protocol to evaluate the dissemination of a previously tested nurse-led PC intervention (PCI) for patients with lung cancer and their family caregiver in community-based settings, lessons learned in adapting and implementing the PCI, and implications for future dissemination-translational efforts Design: Two-group, prospective sequential, quasi-experimental design with Phase 1 (Usual care) followed by Phase 2 (Intervention) setting/subjects.

A greater number of patients aged 90 and over will become candidates for total hip arthroplasty (THA) as the nonagenarian population continues to grow. This study evaluated the patient characteristics and incidence of postoperative morbidity and mortality of 183 nonagenarian THA patients among 43,543 primary THA patients followed by a total joint replacement registry. Nonagenarians had a greater number of comorbidities preoperatively, experienced a higher one year mortality and had a longer hospital length of stay.
